Shoes designed for human feet aren’t very comfortable for Selkie’s species.

Fan Art update time! The Dragon Girl sent this cute picture the other day:
Thank you for the adorableness. ^^
Today's edition of the Secret Commentary is empty, because Dave failed to come up with something for it.
Woot! First!
Yeah… Selkie’s going to need custom made shoes. Luckily, Todd’s an architect so he should be able to afford the things.
I’ve seen some go for $300 a pair, and I’m sure hers would be more.
Why not just get some of those open toed sandals?
Booo. Shoes are evil, I’ve always thought so! If she “must” wear something, why not get those new(ish?) “barefoot” shoe things? Y’know, the foot-glove thingies that runners are obsessed with now? Ugly as homemade sin, but I suppose they’re TECHNICALLY shoes, aye?
But those are molded for human feet! Poor Selkie! Her feetsies are different…
Panel two=WIN.
lol, I love the look on their faces in panel 4 and 5. And custom shoes is probably the only option. I’m sure he could get a pair made she’d really love. Maybe something she could design herself, like vomit fish shoes with stars.
How about a pair of extra large Birks or Danskos? 😀
Just wanted to leave a message of support for the creator – I followed a link over to here a while back, and have been keeping up with your updates. I really am looking forward to seeing the relationship between Selkie and Todd unfold.
Keep up the good work!
You’re fine with the constant fish consumption and the environmental needs, but you freak out over SHOES? Really Todd, priorities. XD
Much love to panels 3, 4, and 5.
Shoes are an annoying byproduct of social engineering and social status anyway. From a young age we’re fitted with shoes which causes the natural muscles in our feet to never become developed enough to handle long term walking without padded protection. Seriously, the human foot was designed to walk on. Try a few months without shoes, or shoes specifically designed to protect only from heat and scrapes. You’ll be amazed at how comfortable it is to walk. Well maybe.
Sorry. Just needed to rant about that. People get on my case for not wearing shoes as much as possible. Cause they seem to think my feet are unhygienic. Seriously? I know where my feet have been, and they’re WAY more hygienic than the bottom of my shoes, let me tell ya.
Loving the comic! Keep it up!
shoes are for prissypants so i wear neither pants or shoes-Selkie
Well, I don’t know about going barefoot anymore … too old to change my ways I think. Still, Selkie’s feets don’t look like they’d take too well to shoes. One nice thing about going barefoot – the bottoms of your feet may get a tad dirty, but your feet won’t stink. (Unless you step in something …)
Oh, and don’t sweat the spam protection. God only knows what goes into those cans anyway!
Well, I don’t like shoes much either. I go barefoot and sockless most of the time. =) SO BOO SHOESIES…and occasionally sockies for the footsies.
I’m seeing a lot of hate for shoes, lol. I propose a compromise: flip-flops! (I’m totally not saying it because I live in my Rainbows, what are you talking about.)
If Selkie’s just walking in a yard, she should be fine. Otherwise, maybe crocs? Flip flops might be hard on the webbing between her toes…
I know it’s not as much of an issue in modern cities, but shoes have historically been important in a lot of areas for protection against parasites, diseases, and things like sharp rocks or broken glass.
I know I’m a little biased here. Growing up I remember the concrete between the pool and the locker room got hot enough in the summer to burn skin, so everyone wore something over their feet for even that 30 foot walk. No one went bare foot.
Erm…
…I’m on the other side of the shoe line from almost everyone. I love my shoes. I feel taller, stronger, and ready to go when I wear my shoes.
But… I’m actually worried more about whether Selkie has snow boots. She’s not going to make it without them. Schools can give special permission for her to not wear shoes (slipper socks are an in-betweener) but that’s not going to cut it when it’s -5 and the snowplows haven’t come yet… Todd’s on the right track here.
Hmm. How, exactly, are Selkie’s feet built? Not very clear on that one…
Webbed, kind of like flippers, and a bit longer than normal.
I know your pain, selkie… odd feet are hard to shod
You may find shoes annoying but you can’t deny the fact that you really need it for your feet protection. It lessen the occurrence of callus and wounds. It protect you from getting prick or cuts that really hurts. I bet that she may not like it but she will get to realized the use of it.:)
Todd’s face in panel 3 = priceless
Flip flops get you to flip and flop all around. Safer to be bare footed.
I like bare feet, grass is comfy
