Been messing with brush settings in Photoshop and thought I’d do the backgrounds a little differently. Not sure about it yet as a regular thing, (I’ve done a couple other strips like this before and ran into issues) but you all know me and my “I’m bored, lets mix up the process and see what happens” complex.
Pohl's bunny ears were one of my first mental images of the character. I almost didn't use it but... nah. XD
I wondered how someone that looked as strange as he did could work with human patients. And he’s a pediatrician? I thought she was going to him because he would be more knowledgeable about her physiology, not because he’s a ‘kid doctor”.
Yeah, bunny-ears is probably a good plan.
Bunny ears + razor sharp teeth.
Yeah, if that’s not a recipe for nightmares and starting to wet the bed again, I don’t know what is…
It’s Frank from Donnie Darko!
No, it’s a Vizzerdrix! π

high octane nightmare fuel ftw!

“Bunnies frighten me.” – Anya Christina Emmanuella Jenkins
President Carter would be traumatized for life if he ever saw that…
Aaaaaand the nap went overbaord as I feared. XD
I may clarify this in dialogue while I am finishing up the colors anyway, but I meant it more like “the kids of patients and kids running around the hospital” than “I’m a pediatrician”.
I hope it was a good nap. π
I’m confused as to who’s saying what in the second last panel. But I did get the agent orange joke.
That would be Agent Brown speaking.
It was clarified when colour was added. Without it, they both had open mouths and could have been sharing the dialogue.
A doctor that can put frightened children at ease is a Good Thing.
I agree. The doctor is awesome both for knowing how to work with kids given who he is, and for being able to ruin Agent Brown’s day so thoroughly so fast.
Submitting a request for the future sale of “bunny-mes” plushies. π
Also, I think I’m going to start calling him Doctor Bunnyme
I might have to join you there, as I can never remember his real name. π
my enjoyment of the good doctor has gone way, way up
went up further by the colored version
I never thought that Pohl could be adorable, but his face in panel 7 is among the sweetest things I’ve ever seen :3
Also, I feel very bad for poor agent Brown…he’s really having a though day xD
Ok, that was really cute! I like him already.
Thank GOD for a little humor after all the intense spine-tingling drama. Or rather, a lot of humor. This is just … The expressions on Agent Brown’s face … The “bunny-me’s” … just everything. Thank you very much.
And omigosh. I just realized something. *scampers off to TvTropes to add “Bunny Ears Lawyer” to the Selkie Trope page because Pohl’s actually wearing bunny ears and this is too good an opportunity to pass up* *and while I’m at it, I’ll add this to Crowning Moment of Funny, too*
Yay, more tropes. π
This whole comic is just so hilarious! Todd missing the agent orange joke, the bunny ears… hah π
Naps are usually terrible ideas! π
Apparently so!
pohl looks so cute, such an innocent face, and wow brown gets flustered easily, hes like an anime tsundere o.o
I believe Seikie’s reaction in the last panel is wrong. Todd reacting like that would make sense. Intellectually he KNOWS there are more like her, but seeing one for real should come as a shock.
Selkie, on t’other hand, really knows there are more like her. She is not the ugly duckling seeing a swan for the first time. She was raised among her kind – for a little while, at least. I would expect her, instead of “wow, another me, but with bunny ears”, to speak to him in their language, possibly introducing herself, as the small child of polite parents might be taught to do in our society. “Hello, I’m Tommy”.
Unless she’s delirious from being sick.
No, I feel her reaction is appropriate, given the only one she knows about for sure is her mother. This is the first other one of her species she’s seen in recent memory, and since she was a baby.
Her words, on the other hand, would be more likely to be spoken by an adult as kids don’t usually make those kinds of connections. But I excuse Selkie saying this because she seems like a smart kid. π
I’m guessing she thinks she must be delirious/seeing things, on account of seeing a bunny-eared version of herself. π
she is sick and if I saw a doctor with bunny ears I would think I was having a fever dream too. Plus she was expecting another human not a dagonite….yes I have named her kind as dagonites….I like cthulhu mythos…..
How dare you! The species has clearly been established in the comments as Piscanthropus warren!
…Ia! Ia!
*shrug* not sure if your being over fanboyish reaction or just joking around what ever. In my mind they will always be dagonites who will soon take over the world! Once the miguu from pluto get pissed off that we said they where not a planet anymore and start the first arcano war of course.
i find it strange that you think its appropriate to tell the Writer Who Created her, how HIS Character, who, again, HE Created, should react in a situation that He Wrote, in His fictional world. i dont recall it ever being actively stated she grew up in a large community of her species. there were vague flash backs of her as a small child, and only one other member was shown, her mum.
for those that think her reaction is too mature, being an orphan, even in a relatively nice orphanage like the one that was shown, makes a person mature very quickly.
as previously stated, I feel her script is a bit mature… But I LOVE her reaction!! Rofllllll
That’s one heck of a pooka.
I am Bunny and I approve of those ears!
Agent Brown, were you about to say/imply that a child who has not seen an adult of her species for years, been around human for years and may or may not have feelings of abandonment and confusion about why she was left/given away to humans wouldn’t freak out at seeing an adult of her own species because they are the same species?
Someone needs another round of those mind numbing awareness and sensitivity classes and a refresher on how to be around children. -_-
I’m pretty sure he was just going to point out that she would not likely be *afraid*.
It looks good with the back ground like that as it puts more detail in while not taking the focus away from the characters.
Since Dr. De’Madiea doesn’t have the “S”-inflections that Selkie has, my guess is that she’ll eventually grow out of it, like a human child’s lisp.
If I remember correctly, Dave stated somewhere, that Selkie could speak ‘s’-free, if she puts lots of effort in it. So this is probably not about growing out of it but training on the part of Dr. Bunnyme.
I think it’s more along the lines of an accent. Like how someone whose native tongue doesn’t have distinct ‘l’ and ‘r’ sounds might mix those up at first when speaking a language that does have those sounds, but eventually will train their ear and tongue to hear and pronounce them. Pohl has presumably been speaking English longer than Selkie has (she only started learning it three years ago) and may make more of a conscious effort to hide his accent.
I was taking it as a speech impediment…
This page is everything wonderful. Everything.
Why doesnΒ΄t the doctor have webs between his fingers?
Good point. Why might be that Pohl is a different species of Selkie’s people, discussed earlier in prior strips. Have to wait and see I guess.
Maybe he had them surgically removed, for great dexterity.
Franz Liszt had the webs between his fingers slit, so he would have greater reach on the piano. They became infected and he almost lost his hands.
The things you remember from 12th grade “Music Appreciation” class. π
FINALLY!

“I must bes REALLY sicks, I’s seeings bunny-mes!”
Hahahahaha! xD I love this page!
Awesome character introduction! One of my favorites!
hm i still wonder, what is the darker part under Pohl’s eyes? somehow it does not fit into the image
Aw π
I wish my doctors would wear bunny ears. Then I wouldn’t be so leery when I have a checkup :/
Hey Dave,
I just finished watching a really interesting youtube video on mermaids. I don’t know if it’s real or not, but it gave the most convincing story I’ve heard to date about how mermaids could have evolved. It’s not quite an hour and a half long, but very interesting and it made me think of Selkie. Here’s the link if you haven’t already seen it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxadGCUlu4k
Thank you for the laugh!
Don’t worry, Nei Li, Dr. Pohl is here to make you better! ~
Are the doctor and Selkie two separate Sub-species, like lake and swamp?
I couldn’t point out where, but I am pretty sure it’s been established in extras and commentaries that there are different races of merpeople in this world, with different pigmentation and markings – kind of like how Irish and Scottish humans are more prone to having spots (freckles), while humans genetically native to Asia and some parts of North America tend to have skin tinged closer to gold, compared to the pink of European stock or the varying browns of everywhere else. It’s also possible that marking vary between individuals of the same race, or are a subset of sexual dimorphism.
That said, the different races would likely have evolved as a result of differing habitats. But I doubt they are genetically dissimilar enough to qualify as ‘subspecies’.
So, basically more race than subspecies?
Yea, I could have phrased it differently. I was thinking in non-human terms, kinda stupid of me.
My brothers and I are a prime example of how varying dna can be even in the same family. All three of my brothers were born with blond hair and blue eyes while I was the only one with Dark brown for both.
The whole “agent orange” joke will be lost on a lot of people. It falls more in military history anymore. Back then supporting a war effort was a national interest rather than the chance to do political maneuvering like today. I thought the joke was funny though but I have more than a few gray hairs . π
I’m only 38 and I totally get it, but my dad is a vet and I don’t mean of sick animals:)
Is it Monday YET?…
Is it Monday yet….?
Is it Monday?
How about now?
Is it Monday yet….
C’mon, Monday, HURRY UP!
Is it Monday yet…?
Patience… patience. π
So has anyone else picked up on Pohl’s much better speech than Selkie’s? Up to this point, I assumed Selkie’s unique pronunciations (speech impediment?) were a biological difference, now it seems more like something she can be taught to overcome.
Todd is still wearing gloves. I thought at first it was because he wanted to hide the irritation that Selkie gave him on accident but then I noticed it was gone from his face, too. Hm… Maybe he’s just cold?
I already don’t like Agent Brown.
The seventh panel; it made me laugh out loud. Totally worth it.
I will stop here in going through the archives, because I don’t want to feel tense and angry at the bullying that has been in strips I’ve recently read.
It shows you are a skilled writer to make me actually feel the physical reactions of rage for a fictitious setting.
Good for you! I offer you my highest praise!
I was saying this phrase until I saw panel 5
“The doctor is in-What the hell is THIS.
