Let’s forget, for just a moment, that she is Selkie, an echo. Let’s pretend she is Clark Kent. And little 8 year old Clark is showing some of his third grade friends that he can light stuff on fire with his eyes. That’s cool as hell, right?
When Jonathan and Martha find out about it they chew his ass big time. “You can’t let people know what you can do!!!!”
That’s what happened with the echo eyes, right?
Now little Clark is at a wedding. Might be family, might just be friends of his folks. But he’s at a wedding. And this gang of thug kicks in the church door and fires a machine gun up into the ceiling. “Nobody move. Hand over all your valuables and nobody gets shot!!!”
And little Clark goes flying down the aisle and beats the shit out of all of them.
Kinda gave away his secret identity there, didn’t it? But on the other hand, nobody in the church got shot.
And that is exactly what happened at Marta’s wedding. There was a war going on outside. And she stepped up to defend her family.
Thank YOU, Selkie, for not ratting out you’re probably a super echo. Or any kind of echo, for that matter.
You know, the way you did at school. Or at aunt Martha’s wedding. Or almost at Amanda’s birthday party.
…am I the only one who feels like this would be something Tehk would say.
A sweet, very ordinary moment that both of them will probably remember all their lives.
It’s different with humans. They freak out all funny. Sarnothi freak out all serious.
Discretion? From Selkie? Did I miss her hitting her head or something?

None kicked the door in at the wedding, stuff was happening outside. And it was being handled.
Also one big, pretty important difference. Clark is bullet proof, Selkie isn’t.
