I have seen “clean the floor with a toothbrush” in several Loki Slavefics (a popular genre wherein one of the Avengers — typically Tony — becomes his master/warden after Asgard kinda forces the issue in one way or another). Typically he’s either magically bound to follow orders, or scared of what happens if he refuses.
But having seen enough variations, I figured I’d spoof them in my upcoming slavefic. In mine, Loki’s bound to work for Tony and not harm him, but he’s still a ward of Asgard (unable to be seriously harmed), he’s not magically bound to follow orders, and he does still have his magic. So when Tony gets irritated enough to order him to clean the whole floor with a toothbrush, Loki kinda sighs and gets to work, maybe with a snarky remark.
And Tony comes back a while later to find him still going at it, seemingly irritated. But just as Tony starts to drink in the sight…
…Loki appears by his arm to question his choice of entertainment. (The whole event had been illusory — Loki never actually cleaned anything with a toothbrush.)
As he points out a moment later, the contract (wherein Tony became his master/warden) actually specified that he be given *useful* work to do, not pointless busywork.
Grandma: “It’s hour 3 of basement cleanup Selkie. What mantra do we repeat every hour?”
Selkie: (sigh) “‘I dos NOT run towards danger. I runs AWAY froms it. Because I’s is NINE GODDAMNED YEARS OLD!'”
Grandma: “For the last time, you don’t have to repeat the swearing part of what your dad told you!”
Selkie: (evil grin) “Buts Granddads said if I’s quoting Dads, that means every times I dos the swears, DAD has to puts the monies in the swear jars, not me!”
Grandma: (sigh) “I’m torn. This is such a great lesson for our child, but a poor one for our grandchild. Drat that old man and his sense of ironic humour!”
Why is this even a thing? I mean this is the internet in a nutshell, but still…
Anyway, if Loki still has his powers, but would at least follow the letter of the order, I’d rather assume a Sorcerer’s Apprentice scenario, where a horde of toothbrushes just scrub away on tgeir own – just, y’know, Loki’s actually good at magic, so he’d not lose control of them.
I’m pretty sure Grandpa won’t permit her to handle anything hazardous down there (remember the woodwork shop). But, he will give her several hours of lectures about same items, so it’s a net loss not a win.
I feel like it’s a little rude of Todd to come down on Selkie for being kind and also being bodily hauled away by literal adults. What was she supposed to do when a soldier grabbed her hand and dragged her?
But this *is* the teaching. She was told to go somewhere safe. She disobeyed and went somewhere dangerous. As a result, she is lucky not to have gotten killed; what if the soldiers had panicked and shot her? The punishment is well dealt.
Danny is making a joke. Read the lines in this order: Grandma, Selkie, Grandma, Todd.
Gotta remember that Grandpa knows something is up, but probably hasn’t informed Marie due to the NDAs he knows would be involved. So to Grandma, it would be extremely odd for anyone to think a 9-year-old is a healer/doctor, though Todd could create an impromptu cover by spinning it as culturally the Sarnothi take apprentices early so she’s been learning basic first aid as a quick little fib. Which wouldn’t be ENTIRELY false. They do seem to encourage supporting their community from an early age for Echoes, and he DOES support her desire to learn constructive, helpful skills with her abilities. Just accidentally omit the bits about magic green fire.
Because of some clever ambiguity from Ban’Thien questioning Selkie. “Do you speak tensei?! Do you know healing?!” Selkie answered both questions: “[I] kind of [speak tensei], and my teacher [knows healing]. I think.”
Ban’Thien, in their excitement, thought the answer was for only the last question: “[I] kind of [know healing], [because] my teacher does…”
And entirely missed the “I think” at the end that shows just how new to all of this poor Selkie is.
Her blush is gone again.
And I’m surprised she hasn’t called Dr bunny ears yet. Not only does she know that he’s a healer, but he’s the only Sarnothi healer she knows of.
I’d like to think that human makeup doesn’t stick well or too long with Sarnothi XD
The entire basement. WITH A TOOTHBRUSH!
lol

I’m so looking forward to writing that scene XD
Be interesting to see if this is where Dr. Terrorhammer gets more interested in the Doctor part…

He’s mad at her about what she did *before* that, where she left the basement to confront the soldier coming in the front door.
Yes, she’s kind and brave and knows that she has superpowers and needs to use them for good.
That’s not a punishable offense; that’s a “teach this kid how to properly use her abilities instead of taking too many risks” moment.
But this *is* the teaching. She was told to go somewhere safe. She disobeyed and went somewhere dangerous. As a result, she is lucky not to have gotten killed; what if the soldiers had panicked and shot her? The punishment is well dealt.
isnt like one of his extended family doctors/vets?
“Wait, what was that about healing? Why would they think you have healing powers?”
“Uh. I… don’ts?”
“But why would they think you do?”
“… AVERY, GET DOWN HERE.”
They just assumed because she has a teacher who can heal, that she was taught to heal.
