-EDIT- Apparently I forgot to draw Todd’s rash. Not the first time that’s happened either. XD
A few weeks ago I had the privilege to visit a classroom in my town after the teacher saw the article about me in the newspaper. I just realized over the weekend that I never got around to mentioning the visit on the site. >_< Sorry, everyone! I feel bad for not mentioning it sooner.
Dialogue in a previous strip implied Amanda had already left the office between strips. I didn't really mean for that to be the case. :(
Amanda is crying? Wait what?
It´s her “everybody has parents except me” face.
She doesn’t even have parents to get the bad attention from.
How she looks: Remorseful
How she feels: Well….
I don’t think she feels remorse, more like envy, because both Selkie and Heather have parents who care for them… even if they are scolding (in the case of Heather).
And suddenly she can make me forget about all the horrible things she’s done. Poor Amanda. I’m pretty sure whether they comforting or yelling, she seriously would just like to be part of a family =/
I think you’re right. T^T I feel so sorry for her now.
I think that her tears are for the fact that although Heather is in trouble, she still has a mom who cared enough for her to come talk to her. And Selkie has a dad who cares enough to cut a workday short (Amanda wouldn’t know he wasn’t actually working) to come to her aid. Whether that will make her any more tolerable is another thing altogether.
Um…He was working from home and taking care of a personal issue with his ex.
Please do not ever assume that just because a person is not working in an office 9/5 they are not really “working”.
If you had read Hanna’s comment, you would have seen the “(Amanda wouldn’t know he wasn’t actually working)”
No one gets paid to deal with their ex.
I don’t think she meant that he is unemployed, she meant that when he was called he wasn’t engaging in that activity which he must perform to gain a paycheck at that exact moment.
Which wouldn’t be ‘taking care of a personal issue.’
Heck, my uncle was a freelancer computer safety programmer half his work career. He often worked from his home office. My dad (college/uni level teacher and later deeply involved in a special inter-university Master’s program) works 2 days per week from home, because the Internet era makes it possible.
I DO NOT assume you’re “not really working” if you’re not at the office/building site/driving a bus/serving customers/whathaveyou, I was merely referring to the fact that he was having it out with an ex when the phonecall came, and Amanda – or anyone else present in this instance – couldn’t have known that, but would assume he came directly from work, wherever that might be.
Thank you.
Amanda can be jealous in the most woobiesh way ever. What’s up with that?
What’s “woobiesh”? I’m probably missing a cultural reference here.
I only know it from TVTropes.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/JerkassWoobie
Augh, noooo, TVTropes is sucking me iiiiinnnnnnnnN!
Join the club!
Actually, we should found a “TV Tropes Readers (Semi-)Anonymous” someday…
Wait… Why is Amanda sad? I thought that she was angry at Amanda
Looks like Amanda might turn over a new leaf … not likely she’ll probably get worse because of the ‘not having a parent’ thing.
Wow, now I really feel sorry for Amanda.
Oh gosh, Amanda is crying now…I wonder what she’s going to do next. Argh I can’t wait til thursday D:
I think I won’t quite yet be getting my wish that Amanda will realize the consequences of her jealousy. I do hope she feels just a teensy bit bad over this. But yeah, that was definitely a *sniff sniff I don’t have parents* cry there. :/
D’aww, your pictures from the class visit are adorable. :3
I think Amanda is experiencing some remorse, actually. Either way, I feel badly for her.
You’re a DUDE? O.o I never realized… I could have sworn you were a girl, and not older than 18. mind=blown
I get that reaction a lot. I think the pink and purple website throws people off. XD
For the investigatively inclined reader, the name “Dave Warren” at the top is an important clue in trying to figure out your gender, pink and purple or no pink and purple.
Haha:) I think ppl are surprised by my name but clearly “Dave” would be a boy in my books.
Neverrrrr change the site colour. Real men wear pink! 😀
And yeah, “Dave” would indicate male to me as well. 😛
Yea…I always assumed the pink and purple was because your main character is a young girl, and therefore pink and purple are young girly colors…unless you were me,I loved blue and would trade my brother all the red toys i got for his blue ones.
Hehehe, blue is my favourite colour too. When I moved to this apartment, I made a deal with the landlord that he’d let me skip first month’s rent if we painted the ceiling (odd stains in white paint) and re-did the wallpapers, which were coming apart. (Wallpapers were interesting, apparently they’d just been put on top of old ones time and after again, we peeled off 7 layers.)
Now the walls are light blue, the ceiling is light blue, and my curtains (small apartment, very large window) are green-white-blue. ^_^
Attitude: I’m so pretty. Oh, so pretty! No one can resist my cuteness.
Reality: The fish face gets a dad. Horse face gets parents (sorry Dave, when I see Heather, I think of horses for some reason).
Results: THE WORLD HATES ME!! So I will hate the world back.
It may be that I’m just too much of a pessimist. But I tend to operate under the “Expect the worst, hope for the best” attitude.
Dave> Yes the glass is broken on the window. Hm… Is Todd healing? He’s missing his red kiss.
Not that fast it hasn’t. I seem to have forgotten the rash again. XD Not the first time I’ve done that.
What is Selkie doing in panel 6, by the way? She seems to be pointing at Mrs. Fairweather´s posterior.
That’s classic “Dad, I want to get out of here” pulling, while Todd is doing the “I’m sorry, but we’re not moving yet” anchor plant. Observable wherever excited children and less excited adults congregate.
Dave your originally from Ill.?
Sure am.
That’s awesome *high 5* from a fellow IL person.
Don’t know why people are saying a bit of crying will change anything. She cried and yelled and acted like this before. It made her more bitter and nasty. The only way she is going to improve is if she is adopted and they get her into a better environment, counselling maybe (but that is often over rated).
Amanda is a bitter child in a somewhat pitiful situation. Many bullies are, but bottom line is she is a bully and is using her “power” to hurt others to make herself feel better in some fleeting way. It is a horrible thing and she may even grow to regret it and leave it all behind one day. But right now, she is a very nasty and hatful person. Her age makes it more sympathetic but it’s the same kind of mind set that teenage bullies have, and they drive people to suicided is some cases.
I have seen it happen in real life and it’s the same thing from age 8 to age 18.
Bullying doesn’t stop at 18. I’ve been bullied in college for multiple reasons (I’m vegan, weird, a nerd, have overactive bladder and thus frequently run to the restroom, I actively participate in community service, I work with special needs… I’ve been bullied for all of these in the last year and I’m 22). I’ve been bullied by full grown adults who call themselves “family” because I’m vegan.
And it’s not just me. A coworker at my fiance’s work recently bullied him because he has a plush AT-AT on his desk. And another one of my friends who is 24 is bullied at work for being gay.
I also work with a young adult with special needs. I have seen COMPLETE STRANGERS of all ages try to bully her before I step up and tell them that it is not acceptable.
Bullies are all ages and target all ages.
We’ve seen tears from Amanda before. I unlike some people do NOT suddenly feel sorry for her. She’s done SO many nasty things and if we’ve learned anything, she is going to just keep doing as she does.
^^^ What Maheen said.
I agree
I honestly don’t know how I feel about Amanda anymore. I’m not exactly in-between feeling bad of her and not feeling bad for her, it’s just that when it comes to bullies I’m always so biased… especially elementary school was the worst when it came to bullies.
Also, here’s a question I keep forgetting to ask you Dave.
Is “Selkie” Selkie’s birth name? As if in the name she responded to when she was left at the orphanage, or did the orphanage give her the name “Selkie”?
I figure I’d ask because it occurred to me that her race, while they have their own language, must also have their own original names.
This is a question best left answered through story progression. 🙂 Sorry!
Alrighty, I can live with that answer. Thanks for responding! 😀
She was five when she was left, so I’m supposing it is her real name. Although, if her mother had any type of accent, it might not be her “real” name, but be the closest anyone there could come to pronouncing it.

Yes, I’m sorry but I agree with the unsympathetic. Amanda’s tears are from petty jealousy, and not enough to erase the negativity and cruelty that she created. The reason she’s not adopted is because any sweetness is phony, and she has a horrible personality and total lack of empathy. She IS a bully, and has done nothing to redeem herself or shown any growth or that she learned a lesson.
On another note, maybe we can show Todd applying some ointment soon to help him heal more quickly, maybe drawing a Band-Aid would be easier to remember. Aside from that we need to come up with some sort of solution to his allergic reaction to Selkie. Even though they could hug I’m sure she’d feel bad knowing that her kisses harm her “father”. Maybe we could find out that his reaction is due to something else, like a combination of something Selkie ate or that her kiss exacerbated some other problem he had unrelated to Selkie.
Todd’s Rash looks like the herps.
I basically just want to tell you that I love you. 🙂
I think that this is an awesome comic~!
And poor Amanda. While I almost hate her, it’s still not fair for an eight year old to feel that… well… unwanted. T_T
It doesn’t erase anything that Amanda has done, but it DOES highlight her motivations for acting the way that she does. I love how you are developing the characters!!
(his rash does seem a little worrying. . . )
I still don’t like Amanda. Her situation makes me feel a little bad for her, but the way she’s acting out to get attention isn’t going to fix anything. Sure she’s just a kid, but a few tears don’t fix what she’s doing to the people around her. I hope at some point she learns to not be a bully and she can make up with Selkie when she’s more mature.
So, discovered this yesterday, have read all the way through it twice now. One of the big things about Amanda is… I wonder how she became an orphan. If you recall, Wu was shocked Selkie had been there 3 years, though Georgie was not so much.

Yeah, she is a brat, no question. Still, she is definitely salvageable. I’d honestly be more worried about Tony, since his bullying is more physical.
Not to be a nit picker, but the breasts on your characters seem slightly low sometimes or they seem as if they change where on the body they settle. Just thought I’d point that out.
Now I can’t unsee it… XD Thanks for pointing that out, I’ll try to work on it.
HA!
Yes, I just laughed at a little girl’s tears.
And no, I do not feel bad about it.
