TODD: So, Amanda. How would you feel about coming by and hanging out on Friday nights?
AMANDA: Yeah!! That’d be great!
AMANDA: Can we watch a movie?!?!
TODD (VO): Sure. Selkie has to do some “sarnothi education” with Mister Pohl that night, so pick whatever you want.
AMANDA: A MURDER MYSTERY!
TODD: You want a murder mystery?
AMANDA: Yeah. For RESEARCH.
SELKIE: Important research.

Thinking of basing the movie they watch on Knives Out. Such an enjoyable film about a terrible dysfunctional mess.
Hm. Clue, Murder on the Orient Express…
YES — & let’s not forget:
(1989)_”10 Little Indians” (a Classic!)
(1965)_”How to Murder Your Wife” (a comedy, with a courtroom trial)
(2003)_”Identity” (a “locked room” mystery, with a twist!)
(2020)_”The Invisible Man” (it’s not who you think!)
(2018)_”Searching” (you’ll never guess this one!)
Charade (1963) is a good one too!
Double Indemnity is fun. Though of course that’s on the flip side, where you know from the start who the murderers are and just have to watch how the whole case unravels.
I honestly want Amanda to get obsessed with Murder She Wrote
Oh my gosh, yes! This is what I enjoyed as a kid, Angela Lansbury is a treasure.
Ace Attorney kid. It’s literally nothing but murder mysteries.
I used to be obsessed with Diagnosis Murder. At about the same time I was obsessed with Stargate SG-1.
I started to write a crossover where Steve got a Tok’ra in his head to save his life and ended up joining the Stargate program. The idea recently made it to AO3 as a Notfic, just to get it out of my head (after a couple decades).
The weird thing is that I can remember practically nothing about Diagnosis Murder aside from the main character causing some amount of cringe (sneaking in where he’s not supposed to be?), his son being a hottie, and one episode where a mom was trying to take the rap for a crime her adult daughter committed and the main character wouldn’t let her do that and I was kinda mad at him because it didn’t seem like locking the actual criminal up was going to solve anything, given the circumstances.
So I don’t know if Diagnosis Murder would be a good show for Amanda to watch or not… but it was fun at the time.
Kids people are going to think you’re planning to murder someone.
The curse of being an author; your Google search history would cause most people to be concerned, and your knowledge of death/murder/cults is disturbingly expansive.
You also gain an impressive lexicon of verbosity that tends to exhaust the patience of others.
“You also gain an impressive lexicon of verbosity that tends to exhaust the patience of others.”
Yeah I have both that, and I tend to talk quickly once I get on a topic, and I’m constantly being asked to either go back and define something or slow down and re-state something somebody missed, and it’s infuriating having to constantly reset my train of thought. Sometimes I just don’t even bother saying anything because I know I’m not going to be allowed to state my piece unhindered anyway.
You gotta find some smarter people to hang out with.
–In addition to your regular hang-out-people! Balance in all things!
Thank you for putting it into words. This sort of thing is exactly why conversations with other human beings tends to wear me out after a while, and why I tend to be introverted more often than not.
This actually happened to me in university because I was doing research on knives.
I’m reminded of a Gahan Wilson cartoon. A writer is typing; “It’s not easy killing an old woman with a butter knife,” he stops to think, and leaves the scene for a panel. Coming back he types; “It’s not easy killing an old woman with a butter knife. It takes time. Almost forty five minutes!”
… That’s not what they mean when they say “Write what you know.” 😛 🙂
You know how browsers have an Incognito Mode?
I’ve long thought there should be a Writer Researching Mode… which (a) doesn’t affect your ads, (b) doesn’t distract you with other shiny objects, and (c) lets the FBI know that they needn’t be concerned over your increasingly alarming search terms.
(I once clicked on a link that showed what sort of painted shells are highly unhealthy for hermit crabs and should not be used. Google immediately decided that I was Highly Interested in painted shells for hermit crabs.)
(Also no, despite frequently exploring New York City from afar, I have no intention to move there, visit there, or do any nefarious things there, it’s just that the two big fandoms I write from are BASED there. Pay no attention to my attempt to learn nearby airports, banks, and construction sites.)
Wait with heavy stuff like “And then there were none.” But Poirot or Miss Marple are otherwise decent starting points. Maybe Columbo.
Not a movie, but Murder, She Wrote, and Diagnosis: Murder are good ones too. The former is especially fun for anyone who grew up with Disney’s Beauty and The Beast. XD
…and now I have Jessica looking like Mrs. Potts (definitely saw Murder, She Wrote first–Beauty and the Beast came out my senior year)…
lol XD
BATB came out the year I was born, so I was introduced to it first. My mom’s a huge Murder, She Wrote fan though, so it wasn’t long before I watched it as well. We still watch it together on occasion. It’s a really fun show.
Todd, just rent Clue. That’s a decent movie anyways.
On the search history, when your day job was making things blow up from locally sourced materials and you want to stay current in case they want you to work again.
Ooh, Knives Out is a great one. If Amanda likes murder mysteries, then a movie like that and how it puts the viewer on an intellectual and psychological roller coaster would be right up her alley.
I wonder if Todd is even going to notice the fact that SELKIE is actually AGREEING WITH Amanda over her choice of movie category… instead of their usual snarky disagreement…
