I’m sure they’re well equipped in dealing with Jin’Sorai teenagers. They are well know for being the drama queens and kings of the clans, they probably got a bunch of parenting books just all about “So you’re Jin’Sorai children are trying to destroy the village. A 25 step guide on how to reign in your child”. :p
Human divers use grease pencils, on some kind of waterproof surface – which could be a slate (stone) tablet, but these days is probably a paper-like plastic sheet. Maybe the eel-skin that they also use for clothes would work well.
It’s been stated that Echos have at least designed (if not directly made) all of their tech (though mass-production is almost certainly delegated). Shouldn’t be too hard to make a “pen” with a tip that heats to a very specific temperature that sears a narrow line of scorched material.
There’s all sorts of potential sources of “ink” (cephalopods unfortunately not among them in the Great Lakes). All it should take to keep it from floating off, is a ball-point-pen structure… and how many of those do you suppose humans have dropped into the lake in the last 80 years?
As for “paper”, we’ve made paper with several different plants at several different times. I find no difficulty imagining that there’s some common underwater plant that can be processed to make something pliable, tearable, but sturdy enough to fill the role, as well suited to an underwater environment as our air-dwelling plants turned out to be. Oh, lots of trial and error developing their “paper” thinner, more durable, etc, but that’s how innovation works.
As above, so below.
I think it unlikely that they would use plant matter, or really any organic matter, sea water is really corrosive and even fresh water would rot stuff.
anarachis or Bacopia would be the stuff for that. fiberous and tough.grows readily bacopia also has a nice fragrance (kind of lemony and has some medical properties if i recall)
“Selkie” is for the most part the name she thinks of herself as. She’s reconciled that she can keep and use both names, but she thinks of herself as Selkie more than she does Nei Li, identity-wise.
Can you figure out a way to differentiate Todd and Avery in the suits? I get them mixed up. For a while, the smoothness of Avery’s hair worked, but now that they’re both jagged in many pics, I can’t tell who’s talking.
I think it’s “Teenager” body language, Todd. You’d be in trouble no matter what species kid you deal with, and I’m sure Amanda will be happy to confirm this.
A trio of Selkie like kids?! The colony may not survive! š

Now I’m wondering how the written word works underwater. Do they use stone tablets? Or echo-built tablets? So many questions…

Maybe they could use a knotted string system.
Lake Superior is a freshwater lake. No salt.
There are too many ideas to quip-u-p with.

Oh god they’re multiplying.
Agent Brown trying to maintain his Federal Agent composure against all damn odds gives me life.
Wouldnāt Selkie be calling herself āNei Liā at this point?
I would assume, like my Chinese-speaking family, she would use āSelkieā as her English name, and āNei Liā as her Tensei name.
Naw, she’s decided she prefers being called Selkie, based on her ending with Truck.

Was Todd hoping that somehow Selkie would end up being *less* of a drama queen as she hit her teenage years? I’m afraid I have some bad news for him…
Todd just realized how doomed he is.
“Happy Wednesday, er, Thursday. >_>”
This happened to me today, too. Is this a conspiracy, did we skip a day?
I like these two. Very self confident and assertive, awesome potential role models (so far).
Me, about to head into work: *sigh* Why am I even checking this comic today? It won’t update until Friday, so there’s no point in even–OMG, YAY!!!
I’m guessing “it is known” is Tensei for “fer sher”.
Close.
It’s Jin’Sorai for ‘fer sher’.
Six of one…

Jaw bones. Look for who has them. Avery has jaw bones, Todd’s face is silky smooth.
Or rather, those would be cheek bones, not jaw…Sorry, I’m a little outta sorts today.
Even so, I think it’s good art practice to not fall prey to ‘same face syndrome”
