Ah, yes. Loyalty to a culture and people she barely knows and what she has seen has to have given her some mixed feelings on the matter; particularly after the forced exile of a not-insignificant number of said people.
Dave, Do the Sarnothi bury their dead? Or They have memorial services?
Cause one of the “boys” were askin’ me did Gien have his “In-Shoorince” all paid up? It would be a shame if someone was to find him dead in the street with Pants. Or, you know, there’s all sorts of things, mistakes, accidents, Denizens, stuff just happens.
I know a guy who was just swimming along and WHAM! An anchor fell out of the sky and landed on him. A real shame, coulda happened to anybody, but it was very sad because he didn’t pay up his In-shoorince when he shoulda.
Or is that why Gien wants Selkie, for In-shoorince?
Hmm. I wonder if this is where we see that previously-lauded ‘Jin’Sorai attitude’ come back to bite Gien in the butt? Because I don’t imagine him telling Selkie either subtly (children are more perceptive then you might think) or not-so-subtly that her human family and friends aren’t worth her time, love, and loyalty is going to go over so well.
I’m really glad she heard about that already from her new friends from other clans who grew up there. She’ll have a moment of “Oh. THIS is what Te Fahn and Tehk were talking about. Tehk ISN’T just a big racist jerk.” BUT THIS GUY SEEMS TO BE…
Hm, yeah. Considering she seems to have the strong will and temper of her mother, especially when it comes to being subjugated.. I can already tell that’s not going to turn out well. For Gien. Plo Quar dueced-out years ago, hid her kid, and nobody’s seen or heard from her since.. PRETTY sure Selkie’s not gonna go for some scheme of “reject the disgusting, unworthy humans and submit to a life of servitude to your “true” people”…
Selkie’s got a kind heart, and a lot of love for her family. And now that her powers are awakening, and she’s learning about building with Grandpa, and in general learning more about helping people and personal growth… Gien’s attitude is going to backfire.
is it just just me or does Gien look MASSIVELY older than the last time we saw him, ie, like he’s about to keel over from old-age?… or is it just a change in art style from Dave?
Bit of an art-style update. He didn’t have the temple-streaks before, and I believe the lines under his eyes are new. Always meant him to look older, just kind of taking the chance to refine that idea.
I ALSO find it interesting that he has had an extremely sharp about-face in his attitude concerning Selkie living among humans.. for comparison here in strip 966: https://selkiecomic.com/comic/selkie966/
If I remember correctly, the previous visit happened before the majority of the sarnothi were forced out of Sarnoth. The likely influx of refugees into this colony and any others in the vicinity – and the subsequent need to house and feed them all – may have significantly soured his attitude on things. Partly because another Echo SURE WOULD HELP right about now and partly because, well, this whole situation wouldn’t be a thing if it weren’t for the (willful?) ignorance of humans.
Hmm, I don’t see much of an about-face there? “I have had no control over this decision so I might as well pretend I did and agreed so I can at least wrestle some information perks out of it”
Go eat some lunch, Gien. You’re clearly hangry.
Eat some lunch, take a nap, do some yoga, go do SOMETHING with yourself, mr cranky-pants.
He’s MY favorite stick up the butt XD I bet there’s one there, too. A big oak branch with many leaves. And acorns
Are you kidding? The stick up his butt has a stick up IT’S butt!
Nah–Phil is the stick up Gien’s butt 😉
“Should lie”, not “should lay”.
Further proof of his villainy: a disdain for proper grammar! 🙂

In the words of the Doctor; “I don’t like the sound of that!”
Where’s the upvote? I need to upvote.
Back in the day, young’n, we’d just post a reply comment with
” +1 ”
Got the point across just fine, ye’ spoiled whippersnapper! 😉
……….I’m 36. lol
Ma’am, no disrespect, but I’ve been married longer than you’ve been alive!
This is why I appreciate the character tags. We haven’t seen Gien in over two years and I needed to go refresh my memory as to who he is.
Oh, look: he’s monologuing. That always ends well.
This is gonna end well.
I hope it comes back to bite him in his stupid butt
Well… at least he just wants to pressure her, instead of like kidnap her or contest the adoption.
He’s being a dick but it does seem like once all is said he plans to leave decisions to Selkie.
Wonder what his reaction will be if she makes the “wrong” decision?
When, not if.
I’m not so sure about his ability or intent to accept it if she makes a decision he doesn’t want.
He’s already regarding her more as property or a resource than a person.
Yep, they’re clearly related to humans, they have that same clan mentality.
Gien, you’re giving off major “stranger danger” vibes. Please get away from the minor child before you end up the ‘bad guy’ in Selkie’s mind.

I am sure if his body appeared in a kelp patch, eaten by sardines and other small fish, that would be very few complaints.

An antagonist appears!
A wild antagonist appears!
He uses ‘Monologue’.
It’s super ineffective!
Damn Gien, it’s for people like you that kids like Te Fahn are afraid of echoes. Well, and Scar.
Gien is more of a reason for kids to be afraid of BEING an Echo.
…And all of a sudden, I’m intensely curious about the etymology of Sarnothi profanity.
People like Gien are the ones who preferred to fight instead of seek peace.
