well she is unquestionably the strongest of the echoes so it does make sense to be concerned what she is up to. she has a legit reason to start a war with what is left of sarnoth right now given its pretty much been a genocide on her clan.
and she is likely the best lighting rod for the “resistance” to rally behind for such a war.
*Tsk* Todd, you wasted an opportunity! “Tell Scar that I will be happy to work out an installment plan for all the back-pay on Selkie’s child support. Also, she wants a pony.”
curious, why is there no way to prove scar is the dad? sarnothi I would assume have some DNA equal, if not DNA exactly as we know it. so it should be possible to do some simple blood work testing (even quietly without having to tell anyone its being done if we assume the normal abilities of the alphabet soup agencies).
do realize it might suit the story line to keep it fuzzy, but it doesn’t really sound like the “in the know” people have much question about it already. that you already have some such people directly asking scar about it shows this. the only reason todd has not before is he really didn’t know the side conversations we do.
more over, why would todd think scare should be punished? the visit itself was mostly harmless, aside from the intended to be private conversation, and seems like todd could have told him he was busy and couldn’t visit that night.
from scars version of the events, his relationship with plo quor seems free of any improper entanglements. even the turning her in, on itself was a legal attempt to turn in a person wanted for crimes (yes the crimes themselves may well be trumped up, but it was a legal warrant for her on its face)
But Todd doesn’t want him punished. He wants Scar to learn barriers. I would not want someone I have met only once suddenly coming to my house, which how does he know where I live, and telling stories about how he once turned people in for money because they were “wanted criminals” by the wrong group of people, including the mother of my daughter, and heavily implying “Oh btw, that’s probably my kid.” And he was turning in people who weren’t doing anything wrong, they were just tired of the fighting and wanted to escape it, and did it under the guise that he was helping them. One way, or another, I would not want a stranger suddenly coming to my house, doesn’t matter the history. And as Avery’s been kinda in charge, at least in Todd’s eyes, he wants to make sure the proper people to know what has been done wrong.
More of a scientific side-note,, literally every living thing on earth more complex than a virus has recognizable DNA using more or less the same structure. So unless the Sarnothi are of extraterrestrial origin, they’re going to have recognizable DNA.
Heck, even if they *are* of extraterrestrial origin, they might still have the same DNA structure.
Which, as you say, also means that while they couldn’t just use an off-the-shelf human paternety test they could certainly figure it out pretty easily if they wanted to. Heck, just about any genetic researcher would kill for the chance to do the first Sarnothi paternety test, even if the results were private.
97% of fish have sex externally. And from what we have seen, Sarnothi are not exactly fish. They are somewhere between fish and amphibians so I could see them being a little biologically different to either or both. A neat thing about nature is most animals in a kingdom have the same rules when it comes to reproduction, but there are almost always a few rule breakers.
Thank you, I forgot about the anatomy sketch, cause I’ve been scouring where Dave had answered this previously. But yeah, go to the FAQ tab, and the anatomy sketch is there. Advises the egg gestates for about 3 weeks before being laid.
There are exceptions to the external fertilization rule with fish. Live-bearers, such as guppies, mollies, platys, and gambusia. The male has a modified fin for delivering sperm to the female (gonopodium), eggs are fertilized and kept within the body of the female, and then the fry are born free-swimming.
There are also weird exceptions within amphibians, as well.
Sarnothi seem to be unique, or more like monotremes, in that they are a gilled, mostly-aquatic species which can also use lungs and walk on land. they have internal fertilization, but a metamorphic life cycle. And then feed their infants on milk from their bodies, and have other mammalian traits, like hair.
The monotremes we know of exhibit the mammalian traits of fur, warm-blood, milk production in a marsupial pouch, and internal fertilization, but they lay eggs like a bird or reptile, rather than birthing “fetal-stage” young like other marsupials.
Always impressed with this comic, which I think is under-rated for the emotional complexity of its characters. Although Todd is one of the main protagonists, he consistently comes off as well-meaning but “off the mark” emotionally shallow and a bit mean-spirited. I’m not criticizing – I’m praising Dave for his ability to develop complex characters, which is one of my favorite aspects of this comic.
Avery seems way too interested in Plo Quar. Not sure if he’s more concerned about what she has done in the past, or what she may be doing now.

and no one would be wanting that to happen.

You misspelled, “shark with lasers attached”
I don’t think their freezer is big enough for awhile pony
Tsath, i lol’d
She wants a pony? I’d figure she’d want a giant “Seahorse”.
Ooh, I wonder if we’re gonna get another Paul dream. Since we’re now focusing on a sleepy Selkie.

so what is todd thinking should be punished?

It’s not a ‘no way’ thing, it’s a ‘nobody wants that to actually happen’ thing. Except possibly Scar, but that’s not who Todd’s talking to right now.
So, like, do the sarnothi have internal intercourse? Because fish inseminate eggs AFTER they’ve been laid so scar would know if he was the father.
Internal sex with eggs would be make them closer to reptiles than fish.

If memory serves (and I’m not looking it up at work), the anatomy sketch shows humanoid genitalia.
