Actually at a blank for something to say here today. Um… I made beef strogonaff last night, and it was tasty.

Today's edition of the Secret Commentary is empty, because Dave failed to come up with something for it.

If you (or a friend) hunt, try it with venison.
Bambi Stroganoff is gooooood.
I started thinking that Selkie might like that. But you put it over rice or noodles, and she couldn’t eat them. The gravy has both onions and mushrooms, and she couldn’t eat them.
Could she even eat the gravy? Gravy making starts with a roux, which is cooked flour. Hmmmm.
A sarnothi-friendly gravy would probably be essentially heavy cream and beef broth that’s boiled down heavily.
Mine wasn’t done with a traditional roux. I browned some stew meat cubes and onions together, then combined it with a can of cream of mushroom soup and a mixture of beef broth, worchestershire, pepper, salt, onion and garlic powder, and a little brown sugar.
Could you use a little beef gelatin or collagen as a thickener?
Dave cream of mushroom soup starts as a roux.
…Today I learned I’m not as clever as I think I am.
Not all of them. Pacific makes a gluten free cream of mushroom soup. (Probable celiac, I read a lot of labels).
We are ALL more clever in our own minds that we are, and often more intelligent than we are. Usually not as smart in our actions, though. Adulting is hard.
Right Dad? The “Greatest Generation” is a tough act to follow.
Shut up, Boomer!
Just how sensitive is she to plant matter, anyway?
The gravy I make most often (sawmill gravy, milk gravy made with sausage drippings) has roughly 2 tablespoons of flour for 2-3 cups of gravy. I’m pretty sure a cat would have little to no trouble eating it, so if terrestrial carnivores can eat it, I’d be surprised if amphibious ones couldn’t.
I had something like that with reindeer once. I mostly remember the mushroom gravy. At the time what made it so tasty was the “I’m eating Rudolph” look on my sister’s face.
Well, she is tolerate of some plants as evident that she can drink tea. Maybe if the gravy is made with not much flour, she could eat it.
…can you thicken gravy with gelatin?
That’s not a bad idea. The bottom of certain dishes (like chicken soup made with a whole chicken, or certain beef dishes) gets gooey like gelatin, and I think it’s basically the same thing going on, just not refined and turned into fruity goodness.
And they make unflavored gelatin.
Most commercial gelatin is made from hooves and bones. So until flavor is added it’s all carnivore friendly
actually, the french use a method to thicken gravy using cold butter 😉
GRAVY JELLO!
Isn’t that what aspic is?
It’s so refreshing having a story where characters actually think and put two and two together.
Come on, Todd, no matter what he’s done or did, he’s still her father, PLEASE don’t try and keep one away from the other just to be her only parent, cuz that’d be really s#$!@y of you. Just sayin’.
think its a bit of combination of two things. one, todd probably wants to hear it for certain that selkie is his daughter instead of just assuming things. would be worse to make assumptions and be wrong, remember he doesn’t know all the side conversations we have seen.
and two he may be wanting to know what kind of relationship is normally expected with a sarnthi dad and daughter. we haven’t really seen much of how such relationships work there, never mind the special twists this one has to it.
well, selkie also doesn’t really want anything to do with him because he sold out her mom. and honestly, fair. however nice and likeable scar is, selkie and todd don’t really OWE him a relationship. the fact that he is selkie’s biological father doesn’t change that. It could be a really positive relationship, but I’m also slightly worried what happens if Plo Quar ever re-enters the picture
Yeah. Might be Selkie hearing Scar’s her biological father and wants a relationship with her will make her consider things differently, but that won’t necessarily work out in his favor, either. (Personal betrayal on top of the already inherent betrayal? Pretty bad there. A grown adult would be justified cutting ties for what he did, much less an already-traumatized eight-year-old.) Either way Selkie’s going to need quite some time to process that – hopefully Agent Brown knows some child psychologists who could help with that particularly loaded can of worms. I get the vibe Todd suspects but isn’t necessarily in ‘bar Scar from Selkie’s life’ mode unless that’s what she decides once she has that information.
As a side note, I tend to take Plo Quar resurfacing as a when, rather than an if, because I’m pretty sure we’ve seen her alive in the present day. I just also assume that Chekhov’s Gun is being held in reserve for a particularly big moment. So yeah, if Selkie DOES decide to give Scar a chance, that’ll probably get messy fast.
Plo Quar is definitely alive. Her first appearance was way back in Selkie #122. In the background of Antoine’s hair, panel 8. No word as to why Dave did that other than a subtle “Yes, she’s still alive,” since she hasn’t appeared in any other real-time comic since. https://selkiecomic.com/comic/selkie122/
Selkie also doesn’t know he’s her father. And she’s also an eight year old who reacted emotionally (understandably and justifiably) to someone who she found out tried to turn in her mom. While she might still feel that way when she has time to think about it, and that should be respected, she might not. Ultimately it should be Selkies decision (when she’s old enough) and Todd’s as her guardian.
Todd is not her guardian. He is her FATHER.
Scar may or may not be the guy that impregnated her mother (do they get pregnant whenever they have sex? She may have been the Bride of the Regiment) but he is not her father. Todd is.
This.
Todd is absolutely her guardian. A parent IS a guardian.
And Scar IS Selkies father, he doesn’t lose that simply because he didn’t know about her. Nor because he committed a crime.
Selkie (and Todd) gets to decide whether Scar has a place in her life. Not you.
And fought not matter what Selkie wants. Spiel is already inserting himself into her life, interfering with her training, and making himself an unexpected presence. Yeah, Todd adopted her, but that could come apart as quirky and messing as you can say “Contested custody.” Wouldn’t be the first time
I don’t think Todd would do that, if he thought that Scar was a good-guy. But Scar’s perfidy is a lot to wrap yer head around. I think he will be all “Momma- Bear” about Selkie until he sees reason to rust Scar. Who personally I don’t trust until Gien and Then are “neutralized.” The war in Sarnothi is bad cause war is bad; it makes smart people do dumb things, and tears families to bits.
Oh, good, it did click for Todd. And he does seem to be willing to let Scar be in Selkie’s life.
Sionyx: Ah, yes, the “Dave” thing that Dave does so well. Shades of Grey would be a grand title for this comic if it hadn’t been used for a great webcomic (or two or three… already) http://theduckwebcomics.com/Shades_of_Gray/4820502/
plus a book and a movie, but Dave’s characters are never 90%—10% evil/good or the other way around. Dave’s actors are always folks just trying to make the best of their lives, … sometimes they are better at it than they are at others, …
Maybe he’s changed. Maybe he hasn’t.
He should not be allowed to have a relationship with Selkie. Being a sperm donor (or the Sarnothi equivalent) is not enough to wipe clean the slate of war crimes.
Normally I’d agree but it’s quite posible Scar was not given a choice in Selkie being adopted out which makes this situation trickier, legally speaking – not that we can blame Plo for not consulting him given what he’s done but still.
Kehl Nin Fa Tho Baalu! It hadn’t occurred to me until just now. Todd and Scar have both experienced having a biological daughter put up for adoption by her mother without being consulted.
(Mind, this point does not detract from how much Andi fucked up – the mother having a choice meaning she has a responsibility, too)
IIRC at least over here (in Ukraine) the mother has the option to just not list a father on a child’s birth certificate and make up a random patronymic. The sperm donor doesn’t have rights by default.
Might be un-feminist of me to agree with this, but… The person who actually carries the pregnancy getting the full choice sounds right to me.
Whether or not he gets a relationship with Selkie and whatever crimes he committed are independent of each other unless those crimes were against her. Whether or not he has a relationship with Selkie should ultimately be up to Selkie. Until she is old enough to make an informed decision it’s up to Todd. But if she wants one she should absolutely be allowed unless it will harm her.
Scar didn’t have to tell either Todd or Pohl anything. He isn’t a hero but redemption is a a thing.
Selkie’s mother was pregnant during war while on the run, and Selkie’s current crippled magic is most definitely something that wouldn’t have happened if Scar hadn’t turned on Plo Qar.
It wasn’t specifically directly against Selkie, no. But… very close.
Apparently Sai Fen and Tai Li are in stealth mode (or Dave is not done coloring yet)
