She is being a more adult and controlled sort of awful. Which is seriously an improvement over ‘instant tantrum’. Now she just needs to move away from mean. And she might just be needling Selkie instead of being serious.
I feel it is different given their history as bully and bullied. Amanda being given a pass to say mean stuff because “they’re sisters!” is literally how sibling abuse occurs, anyway. As a victim of that by my sister, it is tough for me to be unbiased on this.
Like seriously, Selkie is overreacting with the gross and you’re gross and should be corrected, but Amanda happily contemplating making Georgie miserable – your friend thinks you are gross and haha your crush can’t kiss you – is creepy at best and sadistic at worst. I wish one dang adult in this strip would call her out on it for once.
IDK, I figured it was a quality joke. Whether or not she goes overboard with being mean about this depends enirely on the manner in which she ACTUALLY presents the news to George (if she does at all).
Teasing Selkie about unfortunate phrasing there is enirely fair imho.
To expand on why I think it’s fine: George is Selkie’s friend, not Amanda’s, and KNOWS Amanda. He wouldn’t believe her saying mean things about Selkie unless they were presented with sufficient context for him to figure out WHY Selkie reacted like she did. Like, Amanda has 0 potential to do actual damage there.
Amanda’s comment can also be taken positively. SOMEONE needs to warn George about the hazards of Sarnothi Saliva. And now Selkie is possibly motivated to do it kindly.
The artists over at masterycomic.com do this all the friggin time, and it’s interesting seeing when it works for them and when it doesn’t.
In general I think it makes comics look/flow better, except for when it messes up the ‘eyeline’ and confuses the panel reading order. I think it works pretty well for Dave here though 🙂
Ah, there it is. The Amanda we’ve all come to know and sort of love. 😉 I wondered why she was so chill about everything. Just saving up ammo for Monday. How very sister-ish of her.
Given their temperaments and mutual history, it would be more surprising for Amanda to not needle Selkie this way. It’s still kinda awful, but in character and not quite as malicious as she’s been in the past. So far she seems to be hamming it up mostly to annoy Selkie; not actually inflict lasting damage. Admittedly that could still happen, intentionally or not…
I’m not saying they are perfect (and I bet there’s a lot of work the parents/teacher have been doing off screen), but I really think Selkie and Amanda have progressed to having a healthy relationship at this point. Amanda’s behavior in this strip is totally justified. Until the last panel, it seems more like she’s trying to bring up really good points that Selkie should actually consider before continuing to play “romance detective” with two of her besties. That’s not sibling abuse. That’s being a thoughtful sister/friend. The teasing in the last panel seems really well deserved. Selkie is totally owning her “drama queen” status by flipping out and yelling.
OK, I’m still totally confused by the previous comic, what Keisha was hinting at with the “next week” comment, which Selkie apparently understood.
i guess she simply meant they´ll meet up for watching cartoons again….and another chance to push georgie and te fahn together
Annnnnd Amanda is being awful again. Where’s Pants when you need him.

that’s not awful that’s the kind of crap you give your sibling.

I *was* kinda speculating that George had a micro-crush on Selkie at some point, so it’s possible… Maybe George just finds Sarnothi attractive?
Oh, and comic #1234. Weee.
Dave? Did you try to Vex the Vexer again?
I barely managed to avoid having Him sabotage the tags again. Barely.
So where is he in S&K now? Can’t wait to see if he’s going to meddle with the king…
I like the arm-over-the-panel-border effect. Nice stylistic choice.

TBH, Selkie would probably see George as more of a brother than a crush. They did live in the same orphanage for a few years.
