Was trying to get this one done earlier than I normally do because I have to wake up early this morning, but… bleagh. Will be finishing colors and drawing the rest of the background in panel 5 tonight.
-EDIT- there it be
Forgot to make a transcript commentary until Saturday. Uh........ cheese is good?
Wu and Sandy not make it or just offscreen?
Probably offscreen. That couch can only fit so many people.
Yep! Probably offscreen laying on the floor in front of the tv or something along those lines š
Still wish you’d stick the unfinished ones that you end up posting in some sort of gallery for us to look at later. The progression of design is endlessly interesting to me as an artist, and it’s also encouraging, reminding me not to judge one of my pieces based on the unfinished stage, only ever on the complete work.
In related news, I’ve fallen headlong into the Loki fandom (MCU) and am taking up comic art again (yet another major creative hiatus, finally broken), seeing as I’ve gotten so caught up in a particular epic fic that I want to make a comic version of it and I think that’s within my power (if a huge time commitment). My link for this comment should direct you to the tweet I made with examples of my early sketches for both Loki and Thor, as I try to work out the characters in simplified yet recognizable form. So far it’s progressing well.
Feels good to be drawing again. I’ve missed that.
Oh, and I got a Pillowfort account now, too. Much better than Twitter for announcements of any significance. They’ve temporarily opened up for new members, which is great in the wake of the Tumblr exodus (Pillowfort is friendly to NSFW art/content).
I’d say this is another case of me being scatterbrained, but it fills a necessary gap in my ability to connect with people who are interested in my creative endeavors.
I know I’ve said this before, Dave, but I wouldn’t be where I am, creatively, if not for the encouragement/inspiration of this comic (and a couple like it). I am thoroughly grateful that Selkie exists.
The sketches look good, hope the comic progresses well. š
Thanks, I appreciate it!
I’ve got quite the history of starting big projects that never come to fruition, but I think, in this case, that even if I don’t ultimately make something worth publishing, I’ll still have improved my art and gotten over some humps that have been keeping my art stunted through sheer terror of failure. So it’s a positive change either way. And as I’ve been considering it, and as I’ve been starting to sketch things out, it *feels like* something that’s within my capabilities, even if not as skilled as I would like (which is my fault for having not practiced my art all these years).
Yet another project I can only judge in hindsight, after I’ve given it that try!
I still maintain that Fried Cheese Chicken Nuggets sound *awesome*.
Nice that Todd can make something everyone, including Te Fahn, can eat.
Hmm fried cheese nuggets… could try swapping powdered pork rinds for the flour, I think she can have eggs, use a parm/Romano/Asiago blend. Cheese stuffed meatballs are also super tasty.
though would could you use for a sauce that sarnothi could eat?
Gravy or meat-based gelatin, most likely.
Selkie + lack of specifics = something hig
I really like this scene simply because here, in Todd Smith’s little corner of the world, you have Sarnothi children AND human children of different races and backgrounds all happily coming together for a little party without anyone showing any signs of hatred or fear–just a love for cartoons and cheese fried chicken nuggets. I mean, Selkie even invited Amanda and Amanda was going to see if Tehk could go too. I think Selkie and Amanda both have made huge strides in how they deal with people who they once had/still have rivalries with.
This is how most people start a friendship, right? invite everyone in your class over and collateral classmates show up?
I believe that was my father’s reaction to my first teenage sleepover…with 7 teenage theater girls taking over the living room.
When I read Wu and Sandy, my mind substituted Woo and Sandra and I was looking forward to a crossover or cameo.
I know, right? A bit jarring, because of high contrast, but I’d still like to see it.
Ha ha. Their names are actually a bit of a nod/reference to Sandra and Woo, so thatās intentional. I usually try to phrase it as Wu and Sandy to make it slightly less obvious though.
Todd’s reaction is one for the swear jar. xD
Why doesn’t Mary have black outlines like everyone else in the panel does?? At first I thought you were trying to do it so her skin tone could have a better contrast or something, but then I saw that Kesha has black outlines and her skin tone is darker than Mary’s.
Thought it would create a āin the backgroundā look to her, but in hindsight she isnāt far enough back on the plane to enact that. So itās kind of a failed attempt at trying new things.
Yea dude, I mean she’s just as far in the background as Todd, assuming Todd and her are about the same height, and Todd has regular black lines.
I don’t think that’s something that would translate to a white character at all, if you did it on Todd then his eyes would blend into his pale beige face. It would just be weird. And it’s bad practice to use a technique on just one ethnicity of people.
Nope. She just looks like a Mary-shaped muppet. š
