As a parent I can say that it often happens that the conversation occurs, sometimes twice, occasionally as often as every morning, and then the disaster occurs and the child says, “But Why??!!” and you repeat your part of the conversation and the kids says, “Ohhh!” Please note that you must take extreme care NOT to say I-told-you-so, because if you say I-told-you-so, that will be all the kids hears and you will have a very cross kid who still doesn’t get it. You may want to file my opinion away in case you have any kids or adult direct reports in the future. Just sayin’
I really like this one. I sometimes miss the Selkie and Todd solo interactions that were more common before Plot marched on and the cast explanded. Not that it’s bad at all, it’s just that this is what initially drew me to the comic.
I am so happy to see this song come up! I don’t even know if I’ve ever heard it as a recorded song, but my dad used to sing it all the time, any time we were about to drive into a tunnel ^_^
It occurs to me that I may have spent my entire childhood grounded because I predate free will TV watching and games. We did get to watch TV once a week, at six o’clock on Sunday and when I got older that was sometimes extended to eight-thirty. Saturday morning was right out. Of course I was allowed to watch the news when my parents had it on and in those days they talked really, really slowly.
Yep. Was looking it over the other day considering it for a nephew gift. They need to be a bit older before I emotionally scar them with that book though. 😉
Agreed. I remember the cover freaking me out when I was younger, and found a copy (my roommate still has) and I was right, it still freaks me out. The stories were fun though – but I didn’t find it until I was in 4th or 5th grade, not 1st or 2nd like my nephew did… (oops)
Most of the stories really aren’t all that bad, a lot of them were just poems, songs or urban legends, although a few of them were pretty scary. I think it was the art that really made that book.
They released a new version a few years ago where they replaced all the art with significantly less scary pictures and it ruined the books.
The question is, in my mind, can we know bothwhere her book is, and how much it weighs? Or can we only know where her book is, if we give up trying to know how much it weighs?
Yea, definitely conversation that should have been had before, not after. All the adults dropped the ball her spectacularly. 😀
Kinda like real life. Too many adults go the ‘order, don’t explain’ route and then wonder why their kids don’t just obey like robots.
Too true, too true.

As a kid, I knew this. As a probably-going-to-be-a-parent-withing-the-next-few-years, this is a good reminder. Thanks!
Well Selkie, while children are a bit more in the “that’s so cool” range, the grown humans are already wigged out enough as it is.
And most of the time, as history has proven time and time again, some people’s instinct would be to hurt first and ask questions later.

Nice little sideways reference to Girl Genius…
Power is neither inherently good nor inherently bad. It’s all in the applications to which it is used.

This was a very good interaction.

Is that a Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark reference? Because that’s where I first read the poem from.

Ha! I won’t reread that series as an adult, it scared me so badly as a kid!
…great choice of present, though. (evil grin)

I think they chickened out and created an updated version with tame pictures back in 2004.

Nice Girl Genius reference there!
