I wonder if Selkie would feel differently about it if she knew her mom actually hindered her abilities on purpose with the bow? This seems like one of those things where the adults might be dropping the ball not being more forthcoming with the kid.
I seem to remember the conclusion being that making the supression permanent might have been accidental due to Plo tuning the thing too strong.
yeah, either that or she did it on purpose because she wanted to keep her free from the expectations of people like gien – remember the ‘charming’ fellow who would´ve loved nothing more then to keep selkie and orderd pohl to ‘fix’ her so she can do her ‘duty to her people’? echo´s might be respected greatly, but there was a definite ‘they HAVE to work for the people’-vibe.
That’s my thinking, tbh. I got a very…non nobis solum nati sumus? vibe from Gien’s words and demeanor, as well as from what Pohl said a few strips back. Non nobis solum etc. is a passage from Cicero’s “On Duty” where he writes, “Not for us alone are we born; our country, our friends, have a share in us.” Moral obligation. Sort of a sense of “if you have the power to help, it’s immoral not to help” kind of thing. If Selkie’s mom resented the societal pressures of being an echo enough (if there are societal pressures, which it sure sounds to me like there are), she might have tried to shield her child from those pressures by permanently suppressing Selkie’s abilities.
Or it could have just been a mistake made in haste. But the way they talk about Plo Quar…as adept as she sounds…idk.

I remember the first time I noticed it. Or rather, noticed its absence.
It was Questionable Content. He had characters speaking but the art had their mouths closed. It was unsettling at first.
