I started keto a while back and almonds have become my new everyday thing. Almond-cheddar biscuits, almond flour sausage meat pies, etc. Pretty good.
Unrelated to almonds, but a reader in the Selkie Discord introduced me to the band Steam Powered Giraffe a while back and they’ve been stuck in my head for awhile now, so I’m sharing them. Please enjoy these singing robots:
Ihadn't drawn the Cypress Miller poster on Selkie's wall because I wanted to replace it, but had't came up with an idea I liked. Decided to just throw a Kathryn on there.
gods above I love Steam Powered Giraffe <3 check out honeybee and malfunction.
Already have! I found the video for Malfunction touching in an “openng up” way. My personal favorites so far though are Fire Fire, I’ll Rust With You, I Don’t Have a Name For It, and Fancy Shoes.
I really enjoyed Steam Powered Giraffe. I subsequently pulled them into my playlists on Amazon Music.
“Where does ‘constructings a deaths rays’ fall?”
That panel 2 Pohlface. sort of says “ALMONDS ARE POISON.”
Panel 4 says, “I’m gonna tell you this in private so as not to undercut your authority with your daughter.”
So he WOULD only try it once…
Everything is edible at least once.
Ah, Icelandic cuisine!
Some things that are edible only ONCE pass the lips TWICE…
Icelandic cuisine is sometimes more like,
“this was once edible”.
(Months old rotten sharks and sheep, whatever your unpronounceable names, I’m looking at you.)
i agree, and foresee a a lecture in todds future – hot water thats been used to steep plant parts in, ok, but before you actually try and have her *digest* something earth-grown, better start slow with maybe marinating that chicken in herbs or garlic.
also, yay for that kathryn poster, it totally fits selkie´s gleeful ‘i´m trying to make my first mad-scientist death ray here’-vibe
Second way this could go- fatty, protien-y ‘plants’ are digestible, but Pohl’s never thought to try them due to cultural things.
I rather enjoyed the song….
Glad to hear, Nana. 🙂
Anyone else reminded of Pizza the Hutt’s enforcer when they look at the one holding the guitar?
On a more comic-relevant note: Yeah, getting an “almonds are no bueno” vibe here, too.
There have been several attempts at inventing real life death rays, and a few people even made unproved claims of having done so successfully – Nicholas Tesla being a notable example
The closest we actually got is probably the Active Denial System developed by the US army : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_Denial_System which is more of a “pain ray”.
I’d heard of these but I didn’t know it was beyond a concept stage. That thing sounds terrifying.
They are about as effective as pepper spray in high volume. SOME people with stupid high pain thresh holds can deal with them.
“I didn’ts make a death ray, but here’s a miniature robot duplicates of my favorite cartoon character, and a machine thats can make an unlimited amount of those robots! I was inspired by a recent episode.”
Wicked sick!
🙂
Steam Powered Giraffe – specifically Michael (The Spine) and Isabella (Rabbit) Bennett – have been abusive towards their fans; they also work with Steve Negrete, who has sexually assaulted minors, and with known rapist Doctor Elemental.
(I used to be a fan of theirs. I’m not anymore.)
Jesus.. 🙁
Nothing ruins the magic of music and film more than learning about the people behind it. I refuse to read celebrity news for this reason. I haven’t seen a Leonardo DiCaprio film since 2002 when he came to my college campus in his stretch SUV, after flying in on his private jet, just to berate everyone for an hour on how we’re destroying the environment by not riding bikes to campus.
The same thing applies to webcomics, too. Why, if the readers knew that while the comics are being drawn I’m sitting around in my boxers and eating peanut butter straight out of the jar with a spoon, there’d be a riot.
Or make a top rated show on Food Network.
That’s very civilized. When I do work on the computer from home, I do about the same thing but omit the boxers and the spoon.
Spoon?? That’s why God invented fingers.
the difference dave is we expect that from web comic artists.
I think you can enjoy a product or art even if you disapprove of the artist. It may feel more iffy if you actually support them monetary, but considering all our clothes are likely made by starving children worked as slaves somewhere in africa… that way down lies madness. 🙁
Hey, do you have a link for any evidence of this claim? My search got stymied by showing primarily the kind of sites that are either business-related (and thus not likely to admit to wrongdoing or pass such stories along) or wikis that, at most, put it this way:
“There have been a few reports that Steve has been inappropriate to underage attendees at SPG gigs. These statements, however, have no definite proof besides a few ramblings on tumblr, and the Bennetts have stated that Negrete would never do such things.”
Also, I didn’t find a Doctor Elemental, but I did find a Professor Elemental, who seems to be who you’re referring to? And a blog from 2011 under the title “No Means No,” about the experiences of the victim, Olivia M. Grey. Quite sad, though I hope her testimony might help other victims.
If the stuff about SPG’s members is true, that’s also sad. They seemed to have a good aesthetic, and I was looking forward to watching more of their videos. I might still watch some, but I don’t want to get invested in a group fronted by jerks.
(I also found out that Archive of Our Own has a surprising number of Steam-Powered Giraffe fanfics. Nearly 600; I’m impressed.)
I did a little googling, nothing extensive just the first three or so results, and what I found seemed largely anecdotal. Isabella seems to have had some disagreements and arguments with some fans. Social media drama, from the look of it.
The Steve thing seems to be harder to pin down. People keep talking about it anonymously, avoiding naming people, so I’m not sure how to seperate fact from spread-around-stories, if that makes sense.
Here’s one of the blogs I looked over related to the Steve thing. I can’t confirm or verify the truth of anything it says (I also can’t really tell for sure what is actually going on in the video around the facial blurring), so take this with some care: https://bannedtogether.tumblr.com/post/165953523524/ok-i-just-found-your-blog-from-another-one-i
Hopefully Sarnothi aren’t prone to having nut allergies.
Hoping that there are non-almond chickenthings as well! (In a separate pan, in case nut allergies are a major thing.)
I think he’s gonna talk to Todd about that whole “villain” thing Selkie got going on, as that’s something that has been getting a lot of focus lately.
I was thinking he was going to talk about his efforts to find Selkie’s mother so she can “do her duty” as an Echo.
I think there’s going to be some sort of conversation about the whole Echo thing because, as Pohl pointed out, sarnothi society expects things of Echos and that’s not likely to change until (and if) the bulk of the new sarnothi arrivals assimilate and integrate into human society. So whether Todd likes it or not, Selkie’s going to have a bunch of expectations placed on her by her fellow sarnothi should her Echo status become public knowledge (and she regains use of her powers) and those sarnothi are going to judge her on whether or not she uses them to help her people. It’s a heck of a burden to place on any single set of shoulders and it sucks but it’s an issue that’s not going to go away entirely no matter how much Todd tries to shield her from it. Hopefully by the time she’s grown she’ll be able to make the decision for herself on what to do with her powers (should she regain them) and to figure out how she feels about the expectations of her people.
In the line-art version, Pohl looked HORRIFIED at almonds. Now he just looks… innocent? curious? mixed with a touch of worry. Something like that. Really changes how the interaction is interpreted.
OK, the latest news is that the beam coming out of the lake “is just a natural effect”:

Dunno if this posted just now, or not, but …
We now have an “explanation” for the death-ray from the lake:

OH my GOD. I wish that had come out way back when I did the ray in the first place. XD
Some day you’ll have to make the fake Kathryn poster a real thing, so I can buy one and get it framed and put on my actual wall… 😀
