I could nitpick and say that it’s not literally what she said (“webs” instead of “fist”), and it doesn’t seem like it was literally two minutes ago (more like 30 seconds)… but eh, it’s close enough. Happiness! 🙂
Well, Selkie DOES have a flair for the dramatic – sometimes purposely (e.g. “I rules with an iron webs”), sometimes accidental (e.g. thinking she had to choose between Selkie and Nei Li as her “real” name).
“We just wanted to know which one you wanted to be CALLED.”
“Like, ‘Come meet my kid, blank’.”
“First name, middle name. Boom, done.”
And her reaction upon hearing that revelation.
I think shakespear could be interesting, remember it’s only dry because of how very boring people are commonly associated with it and we don’t have the cultural context, I think Selkie could have a lot of fun with some of them
I don’t find Shakespeare uninteresting (especially after seeing Titus Andronicus, which turned my understanding of Shakespeare on its head), but I find OVERUSED things to be boring. Shakespeare is the default playwright, thus boring.
Molière (my favorite playwright atm) probably wouldn’t appeal to kids, since they couldn’t appreciate the reason for the satire. “Arms and the Man” (my favorite play) might work, but it’s really for an older audience as well. “Noises Off” is way too raunchy for kids this age.
Camelot, maybe?
But I think Rainne was spot-on: Let them do a kids’ rendition of Wicked ^_^
Agreed, dunno what the word for whatever Selkie is, but drama queen makes me think of someone who intentionally stirs up shit to cause drama in the negative sense.
Selkie is just obnoxious/not as funny as she thinks she is.
My understanding of drama queen is someone who is often disproportionately dramatic in expression of everyday sentiments and events – usually to the point of being obnoxious, and not funny either. I’d say your observation is on mark and also fit this definition quite well.
Of course, Tehk knows next to nothing about Selkie personally and is only talking about the steoreotypical Jin’Sorai in Sarnoth – which is another interesting aspect.
In the long term I can see interactions among these three kids, and others in the class, having salutary effects all round.
In the short term, there are going to be clashes, perhaps not all of them as funny as this. I hope fans don’t feel the need to pile on and angrily take sides — the side we should be rooting for is deeper understanding from everyone. As Lilliet noted above, kids usually do better than adults at learning new attitudes.
ok, te fahn might be the new bff in the making, but tehk seems to be cruising for amandas former place as selkie´s arch nemesis….the big question is, will amanda join the fray on selkie´s side or team up with tehk in teasing/harassing her?
Oh no its going to be Amanda on Selkie’s side. Family dynamics are funny. No Matter how cantankerous the family dynamic they almost always will crush the outsider who interferes.
NOBODY screws with my brothers but me. NOBODY can mess with me but my brothers. I can knock both of em out its my right as an older brother. You lay a HAND on them and I’m going to end you… I’ve had this discussion with my younger brothers boyfriends (in one case I had to demonstrate with a small sledgehammer). AND My youngest brothers GF. They intern explained this to my ex wife after a fashion.
Based on the interactions between my brothers and I Peya you wouldn’t think it was either. I don’t talk to either of my goofball brothers very often but they know to come running when they need.
Well Tehk’s not wrong, in fact he’s way more correct than he realizes. He just needs to learn that sometimes making the most correct observation can indeed possibly be the worst thing to say. At that age, it seems ridiculous that grown-ups would unceasingly pester you for correct answers to to all kinds of things they’ve only just taught you, but then they don’t even tell you how to figure out when you need to keep correct answers to yourself.
I wondered a while back if there were going to be negative repercussions from the Sarnothi children because Selkie is Jin’Sorai. I still wonder how the Sarnothi children have been raised to think of Selkie’s clan. Tehk is giving us our first insight on that. Context is still key. Does Tehk mean one of THOSE Jin’Sorai as “you’re stereotypical of that clan in its entirety” or is he implying that he’s known (or known of) Jin’Sorai that weren’t “drama queens?”
Well, at least it’s one of “those” jin’sorai, as opposed to “a” jin’sorai. Calling out a dramatic flair trait (Sorry Selkie, you’re the Large Ham trope personified and it’s adorable) rather than only her Clan may be a good sign. As I am one of “those” Italian Americans who talks constantly with their hands, I know how sometimes the stereotypes originate from somewhere…
Yeah, I mean, saying “you’re one of those X” is the opposite of stereotyping an entire group.. it’s identifying a specific person and judging them for their specific particulars.
Bit jumping the GUN, yeah, but…
Worst idea, bringing in a racist kid here. It’s like having ten kids who could go into the school and choosing one that is a white supremacist, and THEN you then put them into a class that has the only black kid.
But they do already speak English, and that may have been an even bigger qualifier than being an angry hurt scared kid who’s upset at being ripped from his home and showing it against the race who’s stupidity started their war?
Correct use of “literally”! Twice! By a child!
:’)
I’m so happy.
I could nitpick and say that it’s not literally what she said (“webs” instead of “fist”), and it doesn’t seem like it was literally two minutes ago (more like 30 seconds)… but eh, it’s close enough. Happiness! 🙂
No one has ever said anything as a joke, ever.
Well, Selkie DOES have a flair for the dramatic – sometimes purposely (e.g. “I rules with an iron webs”), sometimes accidental (e.g. thinking she had to choose between Selkie and Nei Li as her “real” name).
Finally found the relevant link, albeit a couple days delayed – https://selkiecomic.com/comic/selkie516/
“We just wanted to know which one you wanted to be CALLED.”

i love this entire page. i wonder if the other human kids are like “what the hell are they talking about”.
How does that make her a drama queen?
Selkie is absolutely a theatre-geek in the making. she has the scenery-chewing down pat.
Well, now I want to see her in acting classes.
Actually, now I want to see both her and Amanda in acting classes.
Not Shakespeare. Something more interesting. Not sure what.
Wicked, of course.
This. Must. Happen.
Yes times infinity!
OMG. Yesssssss.
I just did the Oxford Dictionaries’ “Which Shakespeare Heroine are You” for Selkie.
She came out as Lady Macbeth!.
I’m thinking Iago for some reason.
Haha, she would love that! (Apart from the “going crazy and dying” part… but that’s Shakespeare for you.)
I think shakespear could be interesting, remember it’s only dry because of how very boring people are commonly associated with it and we don’t have the cultural context, I think Selkie could have a lot of fun with some of them

A “luvvy”?
Will Amanda allow herself to be drawn into this?
It’s gonna be *entertaining* when the new Sarnothi kids find out Selkie has a human sister.
Drama queen ain’t even a good BEGINNING.
Selkie: I don’t care about the drama, just so long as I get to be queen.
Theirs will probably be a “Nobody-gets-to-beat-up-on-my-sister-but-me!” relationship when it comes to other Sarnothi.
well, here’s hope they sort it out like 8 year olds do, and not like grown adults don’t 😡
a fist fight that is laughably cute till one of the kids breaks out the MMA and kung fu stuff theyve been learning in classes
In the long term I can see interactions among these three kids, and others in the class, having salutary effects all round.

well yes, but the question remains, is the sibling-bond between selkie and amanda already strong enough to trigger this reaction?
Based on the interactions between my brothers and I Peya you wouldn’t think it was either. I don’t talk to either of my goofball brothers very often but they know to come running when they need.
Life goes on, much as it did before: with selkie saying things that might bite her in the butt later. Thus is life, and a good life at that!
Fourth frame. Need an apostrophe in “weres”. Pretty sure that should be “we’res”.
Interesting that the first racism we see isn’t from the Humans. Apparently not all Sarnothi are woke.
This is more classism than racism and these are children. Do you really expect adult attitudes from children?
No, though children often pick up attitudes from the adults around them.
Fair point. But they’re young and can grow out of this mindset. Like a lot of people do.
Well Tehk’s not wrong, in fact he’s way more correct than he realizes. He just needs to learn that sometimes making the most correct observation can indeed possibly be the worst thing to say. He reminds me of me at that age.
Selkie might’ve been somewhat joking. Though with her it’s sorta hard to tell.
XD Tehk’s a little more sassy than I thought he’d be. He’s more like Amanda then Selkie.
I wondered a while back if there were going to be negative repercussions from the Sarnothi children because Selkie is Jin’Sorai. Wait ’til they find out who Selkie’s MOM is.
Remember, the Tel’Dora, like the Jin’Sorai, LOST the war. Plo Quar would be viewed as a hero to them.
Well, at least it’s one of “those” jin’sorai, as opposed to “a” jin’sorai. They’re gonna kiss.

I think we’re about to find out that Tehk is surprised Selkie is nice DESPITE being a jin’sorai.
