Theo’s conspiracy hypotheses seem a little less silly when anecdotal evidence starts appearing.
Also, if you don’t quite remember, Todd’s “Punk Rock Princess” ringtone has appeared before.
Today's edition of the Secret Commentary is empty, because Dave failed to come up with something for it.
Remember, Theo: the same people with the clearance to block that information are the ones who would have already had Selkie opened up on a lab table if they were going to bother. This means LESS, not MORE to worry about!
HOB!
Also, I like your reasoning on this. Nobody ever seems to remember that not all secrets are worth keeping, and that secret-keepers are people, too…
I agree. I think that if the government were going to harm Selkie they would have by now. There’s always the chance that she’s being hidden from those who would do so but I don’t think so. If Selkie were that big of a deal, i.e. the first of her kind discovered anywhere ever, keeping her hidden would be nearly impossible. This does raise interesting questions as far as why her origins are being hidden though. The exile/refugee hypothesis is starting to sound really plausible haha.
Haha, I LOVE Todd’s “ohgodembarrassingringtone” face! As for Selkie’s nationality.. I suspect it will be revealed eventually with much drama and humor. If you stop this comic before that point, I will be an angry Leesai! Love it!
Todds face in the last panel… well, I WAS sleepy until I saw that and started laughing my head off….
I want Theo to be my friend so badly. We’d have tea and biscuits together while we nerd out over various series. (Also, his face is priceless.)
To be honest, I’m surprise Todd didn’t look into all this stuff…y’know, before adopting Selkie. Learning about the child you’re interested in tends to be a requirement, and that does involve reading documents, especially if something’s “off”, so to speak.
>.>;;
But this is just me talking from a real world stand point. For the sake of this discovery (which, I’m sure, is for the reader), it makes sense.
I like my plot holes big enough to drive a semi-trailer truck through. XD
HAHAHAHAH!
Haha I love their reactions! XD
I was wondering when she would come back into the picture, figuratively speaking. And now I wonder what Todd will say to her….
And as for Selkie’s nationality, she wouldn’t happen to be from “France” like the Coneheads, would she?
Well, she does speak French…
Well she does understand french, but she also has her own entire language that they have yet to be properly exposed to. So I doubt its french. Maybe a form of latin? Maybe a language specific to what she is? Then again, this is coming from a guy who knows what a selkie actually is in terms of mythology… So take it with a grain of salt.
The language reminds me slightly of Welsh/Gaelic, but then it could be a seelie language for all we know. As for hiding her country of origin from her – well, it would make more sense for her as a child to not know her true origins, especially if said origins meant trouble for her everyday life. When she’s a little older, maybe then she’ll be allowed to find out.
…I was joking… sorry.
That ring tone cracks me up every time I hear it! 😉
I…I can’t decide if Todd’s face is more hilarious or his parents freaking out. XD Hahahaha.
Otherwise, now I’m curious to know what nationality Selkie counts as. I always thought Selkies were a Scottish or Scandinavian folklore and kinda assume she came from one of those general areas. So…is there some underwater nation of her people that the government knows about but doesn’t share with its citizens?
Darnit, I wanna knooooow. *forces self to wait patiently*
As far as I can tell, Selkies are from Scottish and Irish folklore, and from that of the islands up there – Faroes, Orkneys, Shetlands etc.
The Inuit Indians have a seal-goddess named Sedna, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there were similar creatures in folklore everywhere that seals live near humans.
Not Scandinavian. I’d think more Irish/British direction.
Atlantis?
ummm, just have to point out, in the last panel it kind of looks like Todd’s hands are down the front of his pants. I know you probably meant for him to be reaching into pockets to find his phone or just out of embarrassment but…
I love the conspiracy theory and freak out but I have to admit the anime like expression on Todd’s face in the last panel doesn’t feel (to me) like it fits with your normal drawing style for the comic.
Ya it’s easy to over-do the “dot-eyes” expression. You shoulda sen the pencils though, it was even goofier-looking. This is actually toned down. XD
I wasn’t sure how the position of Todd’s arms would read; was trying for a bolt-upright “Oh crap, not now” body language.
I’d think that if there are papers filled out for naturalization, her nationality would now be “American” … unless she got turned down…
hmmmmmmm….. 😯
Ladies and gentlemen, may I (re)introduce you to; the ” Roswell Theory”
Huh… I guess I never really wondered where she’d be from. Well, I have, but not the problems or differences it would bring. a new twist I just love~
Can’t wait for thursday, argh!
“The phones are tapped! No one is safe!” I love you Theo….He’s gonna be the best grandpa. 😀
I plan on being an eccentric grandpa someday, and hope for continued lessons from Theo.
I love, love, love, love that last panel! Their faces are great, talk about timing.
Is that a real song, or did you just make that up? Also, I read an unhealthy amount of web comics but this is one of my all time favorites so keep up the good work.
I wish that was a real song! Also, there is actually a song called Punk Rock Princess. It’s by Something Corporate. But it’s nothing like your Punk Rock Princess.
I googled the phrase “Punk Rock Princess” to make sure I wasn’t copying lyrics. Ya, the real world Something Corporate song is much less… biker-punk. XD
Unfortunately. You should totally make a real ringtone for this. I’d buy it 😛
Yeah… just watched that youtube vid too. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GX0uEs3I6TA ) Kind of disappointing whiny emo music, to my ears anyway.
Your lyrics? I was imagining them being spat out by the Beastie Boys. Much better! ^_^
Their faces…especially Todd’s. XD Cracks me up.
It doesn’t seem like they’re hiding her nationality, more like they don’t know it.
Seems to me if the gov’t didn’t know her nationality, the field on the form would be left blank or filled in with “unknown”. Looks to me like something was filled in there, then redacted later. The mystery deepens…
Oh my gosh, I love his dad in the last Panel
I absolutely ADORE this family. Oh my god, his father is awesome! <3
They didn’t seem to black out anything else, if I remember correctly, so maybe they wrote “we have no fucking clue” and then blacked it out to look mysterious. XD
…that would actually make sense, especially if this is USA. (Has it been mentioned anywhere, where this comic happens?)
It takes place in Calumet City, a fictitious city in Wisconsin, USA.
Thank you. Would you know that looking up the approximate locations of the fictional cities in my favourite webcomics is making me learn more about the geography and demography of USA than what I knew back when, in grade school, we were required to be able to name and place on map every single one of the states of USA as well as major rivers and other large-scale geographical features? (I live in Scandinavia. =P)
The expressions on everyone’s faces in the last panel remind various reactions from me, when hearing other people’s more-or-less bizarre ringtones. 😛
hey, i’m a new reader, loving the story so far, keep up the good work
Thank you!
lol, thats a classic look on his face at the last panel.
Nah, I knows wheres she’s froms, only only one place speaks likes thats.
I am curious to hear of this place. :O
The biig secret is that she is … Canadian! *le gasp*
Then wouldn’t her words end with ‘eh?’ instead of “s”? Haha
No. We only do that to confuse outsiders, eh.
Obviously that is how you spell her nationality. Big black squares and everything. :]
this is just making me want to mentally plug in “Atlantic ocean” for place of birth under that black bar. ^_^
I have my theory and I’m curious to see if I’m right.
Todd’s poker face is priceless.
Yeaaah I’ve been going back and commenting on *everything*, don’t mind me
Andi, SECRET GOVERNMENT AGENT?
nah.
….
OR IS SHE?
or is HE!?!?!?!?!
