You can’t see them in a lot of detail, but Selkie is indeed wearing her Sue and Kathryn boots. (It’s an old strip but good lord do I still love the Panel 1 expression on Selkie back there. XD)
The action and dialogue in the final two panels was originally something different (that I may reuse later so no telling), but discussions in the previous strip's commentary gave me cause to meditate on how cold dry air would affect Selkie's breathing, which I hadn't considered. So, thanks gang! :D
For those asking about Selkie’s tolerance and methods for cold temperatures, this blizzard’s for you. -EDIT- Slightly tweaked the dialogue to make it more clear that Selkie has heat pads stuffed in her layers.
Selkie's winter weather kit prioritizes insulation and heat retention as much as shielding from the cold temperatures. Insulated thermal underwear, insulated jacket, and special pockets sewn in by Grandma to hold portable heat pads close in. I believe I mentioned this before, but Selkie goes through a LOT of portable heat pads.
The next arc picks up a couple weeks after this one chronologically, and is a bit more character focused. In particular, I get to reveal something about one of the supporting cast members I’ve been sitting on for a whiiiiile.[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry…
The original ending to this arc was very different in tone in all the wrong ways and I'm glad I revised it. In the original draft, Mary left the apartment building to get her car brought around, and found a note on the windshield, "You're not very good at keeping secrets." signed with a capital B. I feel like that ending would have been ominous in all the wrong ways, and more than a little cliched. Not that I'm beyond cliches, mind you. ;P This revised version works a lot better for me.
Brown is srs bsns. – – – – – Just a heads up, but update schedules may be in flux in the near future. My 9-5 contract job is over and I start a part-time job next week, no idea[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry…
It helps to speak dialogue aloud when writing. For example, Brown's last piece of dialogue was originally going to be "Accidents are just infant incidents". Infant Incident is a bit tongue-twistery to say aloud, so I went with new-born. Maybe it's because I am writing this at 3am, but I can't stop saying it to myself now. Infant incident. Infant incident. Infant incident.
This is an initial design for an Adult Selkie. Her people develop face and body markings as the go through adolescence. The design of Selkie’s markings may change down the road. I’m not sold on the arm and shoulder spots[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry…
Today's edition of the Secret Commentary is empty, because Dave failed to come up with something for it.
So, I was thinking that I haven’t done a Sketch Bonus Saturday in awhile, and I’ve been wanting to explore what an adultified Selkie may look like. So, in addition to the usual Friday strip, check in on Saturday for[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry…
I seem to remember saying I was going to try to write shorter arcs for awhile. I looked back over the archives and realized this arc started December 27 2012. ...I SUCK at short. XD
The final damage number of George’s combo was 15 damage to each unit in the area. Sage’s Elixir adds 3 to the Brains stat for one turn. Goblin Gunpowder adds 2 damage to the next Explosive-type item’s damage. The Doom[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry…
On the subject of the Haunted House game, I basically made up enough details to give the characters something to talk about, but from what's been presented, I don't think it would work well as a real-life game without a lot of tweaking. The most intuitive victory condition (attack the Evil Boss) is reportedly impossible without a full party of six, limiting smaller play-groups in their choices. And as George displays here, the Last Man Standing victory condition basically turns the game into an arms race of deceit and mistrust which can assassinate players from out of nowhere. (Geoge WAS going to save that nuke combo for the Baron, but well... he had to leave. XD)
