ANDI: Heeeeyyy... Todd. Todd-o. The Toddster... sup?
ANDI: Uhhh, where's Amanda?
TODD: I put them on an errand. Sounded like... something delicate going on?
ANDI: Christ. I am so sorry, I know how this looks. I was working on a client's logo, and...
ANDI: I've been... seeing someone. Covertly. Amanda doesn't know yet, and I let it slip she'd be gone most of the evening, and a... surprise drop-in happened.
ANDI: Look, uh... I'm not ready yet to tell kiddo. Uncertain status versus stable home environment?
TODD: No, I get it. I'll tell her we heard the TV.
ANDI: Yeah... okay. Thanks, Todd. I just... I have NO clue when the right time to tell Amanda about her is yet.
TODD: "Her"? Andi!
ANDI: HIM! W-WHAT EVEN ARE PRONOUNS? SOCIAL CONSTRUCT!

I can't beliee as of Friday I'll have drawn 1500 of these. O_o
Congratulations! This is when you get your pace set in.
Why is Andi so freaked out? I can’t imagine Todd would care.
Also, I know it’s been a while IRL, but in-universe Todd found out about Amanda pretty recently, no? He should still be pretty peeved…
It’s been approximately six-seven months since the initial reveal.
I imagine she never hinted she was bisexual when they were together. Or even -knew.- Not to mention that it’s still technically talking about your hookup with -your ex-.
I don’t think we know a lot about Andi’s upbringing. I assume it can be pretty scary and hard to deal with to learn that you are bi when you always thought of yourself as straight.
Yes. Yes, it can. Yes, I’m speaking from personal experience.
Now would be the time to ask about the beach trip, she will say yes to almost anything right now
Ha! Good point!
That’s such a dastardly thought. Reminds me of my family’s motto: Don’t plan, …scheme!
Ok, I know that what originally prompted Andi to find Amanda again was to rekindle her relationship with Todd. While that got shot down in a blaze of Anti-Aircraft fire, I think it’s great that Andi isn’t holding onto that fantasy and is moving on. That to me speaks volumes of the maturation of Andi since we were first introduced to her. Keep it up Dave, and hopefully, once the teacher/parent conflict of interest thing is sorted out, maybe Todd and Mina can have a better date than the turkish coffee shop.
I love how uh… I love how Andi is so panicked in the last panel that she art -shifted. lol
I feel like this person she’s seeing is actually giving her a reason to let Amanda go. Or at least an incentive.
I’m very proud of Andi for wanting to keep a stable home-life up for Amanda! I’m also VERY proud of her for starting to move on from an untenable situation. This is really great all around!
she’s seeing her boss isn’t she?
And that’s why Todd is reacting “Her” Andi!
Not a good idea to mess with the boss… but a very good sign that Andi is separating “iffy” new relationship with stable home life. Introducing your kid to a “maybe” is really not healthy.
My guess? She’s seeing Ms. Flowers.
Didn’t she break up with her girlfriend for freeloading, nearly costing her her job?
I hope not, that would make school seriously awkward for Amanda, possibly prompting a classroom change depending on the school’s policies about that sort of thing.
She’s an assistant not her teacher and I’ve literally gone to schools where moms have there own kids in there class. This is not the end of the world conflict of interests scenario that media treats it as. Its actually very common and benign.
It CAN be benign. It can also be disastrous. It has more potential for the later than a relationship with someone outside the school. It’s not always avoidable but it’s something parents need to be way more careful of. And Andi definitely does not strike me as someone who would handle it well, the current storyline in particular.
So now the only question is, is her new so actually a her and she is freaking out about Todd knowing that for some reason, or are they a he and she just made a mistake.
Normally with that initial pronoun and reaction you’d say she let the truth slip and is now panicking and trying to cover it up. On the other hand, i have called completely cisgendered people by the wrong pronouns before by complete accident and my levels of embarrassment aren’t too dissimilar to Andi here when i have.
Oh I laughed so hard at that! Gender is a social construct, largely centered around clothes. And we weren’t wearing any so it doesn’t count!!
The trouble is gender both is and isn’t a social construct because English lacks the clarity of having separate words for the three aspects that it can refer too (genetic, physical, and mental). Thanks a lot English, yet another mess you’ve gotten us in to with your ambiguity.
Oh good it’s not Patricia, I was prepared for Drama. Looking forward to meeting Andi’s new partner!
I just had a completely out of left field most likely totally incorrect idea for why Andi is so reticent and nervous about Todd knowing anything about her new so. They’re sarnothi and she’s still dealing with her own feelings with everything that’s 7appened and the social/public reaction her relationship would bring. So the prospect of anyone finding out just yet, even Todd, freaks her out. Like i said, most likely completely wrong, but a fun thing to speculate.
Now that would be an interesting twist.
Let’s just hope fooling around isn’t in Amanda’s bed (as Andi now sleeps on the couch so Amanda gets her own room 🙂 )
Seriously though, I’m glad Andi is moving on. I was really worried she was going to continue to try and manipulate Todd.
Is Selkie the comic older than Selkie the character?
Yes, by about three years and growing
Doesn’t Jessie live in Andi’s building? Although, the girls (and possibly Todd) would likely recognize her voice.
I would hope Jessie knows enough to not get involved with Andi for the same reason that Mina wouldn’t get involved with Todd.
Good point.
The last two panels have Andi speaking like she’s high. Check your grammar and syntax, Andi isn’t from Yoda’s planet. Or is she???
Second-to-last panel seems natural, albeit in a “speaking without composing” way — the “yet” modifies the completed clause (“no clue when the right time is”) to imply that she’s still working on figuring it out, instead of being completely stumped with no ideas; the “to tell Amanda about her” part specifies which “right time” is being discussed.
Could it be written more formally? Yes, but does Andi really strike you as being the kind of person to speak formally in her everyday life?
The last panel, of course, can easily be chalked up to her being utterly flustered to the point of babbling.
Bad grammar is like fingernails on chalkboards – always.
Yuck.
It’s a casual, not to mention, emotionally flustered moment, not a doctoral dissertation. Andi’s speaking just fine under the circumstances. Not everyone speaks with perfect formal grammar. In fact few people do.
I’ll give Dave credit, I had always assumed at some point there was gonna be some sort of reconnection between the two. This is better.
Would Andi really be upset about accidentally outing herself as bisexual? I don’t think we’ve seen any instances of orientation bigotry at all in the comic so far, and she knows that Todd has a gay brother.
So, I’m going to make a prediction — she’s been seeing the trans dad we saw at the PTA meeting, and is genuinely upset about botching the pronoun.
OOH! I like this prediction! Especially since I’ve been thinking about him ever since his appearance. Was very excited to see trans representation in the comic. ^^
Todd is her ex boyfriend and father of her child PLUS Andi just got caught in a rather compromising situation by him. Even if she knows he’s 100% fine with non-straight relationships (and I don’t think for a second it would bother him, Todd’s cool that way.) she’s just outed herself to him unintentionally. Perfectly understandable to be even more flustered. Which, to be fair, seems to be Andi’s default state of being anyway 🤣
I love the look on Todd’s face in the last panel… it’s got the beginnings of a s@#t-eating-grin forming… i think he’s moved on as well to not be pissed at her anymore, and is starting to go back to the friendship they had in high-school before the sex kicked their relationship all out-of-whack…
I keep re-reading this because this. is. so. cute.
