TODD: Well, Selkie has my okay, but I need to confirm with Amanda’s mother.
AMANDA: WHAT?! I can’t go?!
TODD: I didn’t say that. But your mother has a right to be talked to first.
AMANDA: Oooorrrrrrrr, we could just... go?
TODD: I’m sure she’ll be fine with it, but she needs to be asked first.
AMANDA: But if she’ll be okay with it ANYWAY... better to beg forgiveness?
TODD: Absolutely not true.
AMANDA: Are you scared she’ll say no? Fight that! Be brave!
TODD: Amanda, knock it off or no dessert tonight.
AMANDA: I think I miss when I just yelled a lot and people gave me stuff to shut up.

Today's edition of the Secret Commentary is empty, because Dave failed to come up with something for it.
Good on him for being firm. And a good lesson for her: big puppy / kitten eyes don’t always work. Love that litany of attempted wheedling!
More importantly, depending on what agreements they have, it could be considered kidnapping.
That’s the price of maturity, Amanda. It’s definitely worth it in the long run.
no it’s not and that isn’t maturity so much as having better patience.
I meant the last panel, when she said “I think I miss when I just yelled a lot and people gave me stuff to shut up.”
She has since matured and grown as a person quite a bit. While this means that she can no longer get what she wants as easily, it is but a small price to pay for becoming a more mature and healthy person and developing better interpersonal relationships.
Also having better patience is part of maturity (meaning not being immature, bratty, and childish).
If one does not think that learning patience is either worth the effort or a part of maturing, then one’s self might well be lacking in maturity.
Just a thought.
Love the artwork on Amanda in the last frame.
That she didn’t resort to yelling says a lot about her growth.
Good for you Amanda, maturity suits you.
Come on Todd, you are an adult. You know that sometimes it’s easier and safer to just do a thing.
I mean in this case he’s right to talk to Andi first, but still.
If it ain’t broke, Amanda!
Honestly, Amanda, the way things are now, this is a formality, but it’s still a necessary formality. Definitely not worth starting a Thing over.
It’s a comic, so Aunt Marta gets a pass, but seriously something like this can be a surprise for the KIDS, but should never be for the parents. If either of them has to say “NO” it would be very hurtful. Even worse, if only one parent has to say no. Worse yet if the “no” comes for some reason that could have been prevented with planning.
Just don’t.
XD Pff. Oh Amanda. At least you’re learning/growing as a person. She’s a goof.
Any child will attempt to play one parent against the other if they think it will get them what they want. Best to shut that down immediately and firmly before it becomes a habit.
You don’t need to get mad at them for trying; you just need to show them it doesn’t work.
But this one is kinda harsh – it may be that Marta didn’t think since she doesn’t have kids herself, and she knows Todd, but still…Todd could have said he’ll check with Andi and let Marta know and leave it at that.
I’m more worried if Andi says yes and Amanda can go, but Dr. Pohl or Agent Brown says it isn’t safe for Selkie at all. After hearing Todd say yes, that would be so harsh for her
“Todd could have said he’ll check with Andi and let Marta know and leave it at that.”
Umm that’s what he said to start with. It was Amanda pushing the issue.
Denying dessert is harsh, if she doesn’t stop trying to manipulate her father to go behind her mother’s back?
Hardly harsh at all. Dessert is a privilege or reward, not a right. He even gave her a clear warning.
Amanda is so offended that she even failed to use an interrobang – she instead invoked !!!111!!
My mobile device can’t even do an interrobang without copy-pasting it from elsewhere
