Selkie flexing that upside-down swim.

Todd (VO): Watching the Jin'Sorai move upwards to dance was a sight to see.
They had singers providing accompanying music. Couldn't understand a thing, but it sounded nice.
Have to say, I'm glad we came here again.
Seeing Selkie joining in her people's celebrations, happy to be part of it all...
I'm glad she found this place. Despite the occasional eel.
I noticed Gien sitting on the sidelines, watching. Might be the first time I've seen him smile.

Singers being present for the musical accompaniment was something I had as a background info piece, just needed a place to work them in on-panel.
I just realized, if their civilization is at the bottom of a lake, the pressure must be tremendous! Selkie might grow up to be hella stronk! Or lake Eerie is not as deep as i think it is. If a human had a long snorkle, its impossible to expand your ribs to draw in a breath just 20 or so feet down. Todd and Avery must be particilarly slow and clumsy like this.
Lake Erie is actually super shallow- it only goes down about 300 feet.
Superior on the other hand is one of, if not THE deepest non-oceanic body of water on the planet.
I wonder how many relics of the battle of Lake Erie might be in or near Put-In-Bay.
Re: Lake Superior–turns out, no, it’s not even in the top 20. (Or would that be bottom 20?) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_lakes_by_depth
Good question there– I wonder how it works? How do lungs play off against gills in a person with both? If the Sarnothi fill their lungs with water, perhaps as part of the process that draws it through their gills, then pressure may not be an issue (may authority here is based solely on the movie “Abyss”!). Also, Sarnothi lung tissue could conceivably draw some oxygen from the water, assisting the gills. But I bet the average Sarnothi is stronger than the average human, water being a more difficult medium to penetrate.
Todd of course is not using a snorkel. He’s using a diving helmet, breathing pressurized air, or if deep enough, a helium/oxygen mixture.
Their lungs could either fill with water, or they could simply collapse. Either would require significant differences with ours. Water is a lot more viscous than air, and collapsing/uncollapsing is something our lungs can’t do in a functional way.
As for strength: Pressure is not an issue. It is applied equally on each side of the body. Viscosity IS an issue. Every motion, especially rapid ones, requires more force, and more energy.
The more jin sorai I see the more obvious it is that selkie doesn’t fall in the range of “tones” for the clan. How has no one else realized she’s mixed (other than Gien) ? And with her mom’s history, I imagine narrowing down possible fathers from thst isn’t hard… again, how hasn’t her being sar teri become public knowing or at least strongly suspected?
I think you have it correct. I think the acceptance or rejection of Selkie in the Gien-Old Farmer political arena will be the rise of OR downfall of New-Sarnoth!
