I watched the movie Contagion tonight before coming home to finish the comic… kind of terrifying if you think about the movie’s subject matter in terms of the real world.
I usually hate when color balance makes everything green-yellow in movies, but for a movie about a world wide pandemic plague it worked.
I almost cut panel three and redid it more realistically, but to be honest the big angry fireball is what I remember every phone call to my angry parents feeling like whenever I did something bad.
<3333
Woooow. Gotta love the Mom’s reaction. This actually improves my opinion of her. You don’t do a child any favors by letting everything slide. I foresee Heather getting fairly punished and then life continuing happily from there for the new family.
There’s ‘not letting things slide’ and then there’s ‘bashing the kid over the head for any mis-step’. Mom better dial things down a notch or two soon.
Of course, panel 3 could simply be Heather’s emotional interpretation of Mom’s reaction…
It’s the emotional interpretation. She might be afraid herself of being sent back, and she knows she’s in trouble. A powerful thing, perspective. I knew my mom was calling one time to berate me when I got caught doing a lot of bad stuff that even the phone ring sounded angry to me. I had made it home before her and she was told I had broken a lot of car windows. So she was ready to explode.
Although I do agree, I also have to point out that Barbara has been told a distorted version of what happened.
Nobody knows that Selkie took her shirt off by herself and hung it over the door where Heather was able to steal it. The school thinks Heather somehow assaulted Selkie and forcibly stripped her topless.
If that was the case, then chances are that Selkie would have seen her ‘attacker,’ and they would have known who did it from the beginning.
If that was the case, then Selkie would most likely have seen her ‘attacker’ and this whole thing would have been avoided.
Oh yeah. Heather is in deep DEEP kimchee.
Good explosion, i feared that Heathers parents would take defensive position and somehow put the blame on Selkie, thanks for being wrong
meanwhile in Sweden:

That guy was crazy! I thought it was a commercial or something at first, is that a clip from a TV Show?
swedish comedy from 1988, that was only the intro, it’s about a teacher that ends up in prison on false charges, and a group of less talented real criminals…considered good back then, now considered somewhat “camp”
The only place I could find it was here:Link
“Snowplow smashes 23 planes–Northampton, Mass (AP)–Vandals commondeered a runaway snowplow and systematically smashed 23 single-engine airplanes at a private airfield, leaving 10 beyond repair, officials said Thursday. Russ Benjamin, co-owner and manager of LaFleur Airport, said 10 planes, costing up to $30,000 each, were damaged beyond repair. He estimated the total damage could reach $500,000.”
One of those planes was my dad’s. My first thought on “Meanwhile in Sweden” was, “Oh that’s where they sent the buggers…”
lol little kids and their hatred of cooties
Love the momยดs reaction, too… both for drama/comedy reasons and as an indication of her attitude to parenting.
And I love Selkieยดs reaction in the last two panels as well.
Ah, some humour finally lightens the mood.
That comic reaction over the phone actually gives a lot of information. Yes, they are angry with her, no they are not going to ‘give her back’. Things wont be too serious for Heather.
Selkie has the most terrific best friend. Not only did he bring meatballs, and I want to believe he was the one behind reminding them that Selkie eats only meat, he’s sitting with her and distracting her from her bad experience.
A few strips ago, Selkie was absolutely correct when she declared that Georgie was awesome. He really is. I think I’d be all torn up if their friendship ended for some reason.
Also, Heather’s mom’s fireball explosion through the phone, great! It really feels like that when those dreaded calls are made.
You’re right about him. He DID tell Jessie that Selkie only eats meat. https://selkiecomic.com/?p=776
Well, who really needs eyebrows after all?
The mother is a dragon. Beware!
I’m glad you left the fireball. It’s perfect. LOL!
What happened to Selkie’s arm in the last panel? It looks like she’s got three hands.
She’s making a grossed–out handflip.
There’s motion lines indicating an up-down hand wave action. A little hard to see since her other elbow is kinda in the way…
Rapid action in a comic is often displayed as if it were moving so fast you see multiple copies of it.
She has done it before, in panel #4 here: https://selkiecomic.com/?p=178 Though that one was more dismissive than grossed-out.
…Man, I really drew Selkie scrawny back then. Her arms are like toothpicks!
Oh, I see it now. Sorry Dave!
I like Heather’s parents’ reaction. No matter how they react there will still be some biases against them, but I love how they reacted here. It made me laugh.
I find panel three to be a remarkably accurate representation of my childhood.
Diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitto! :/
HA! I’ve seen that fire before. My parents were actually pretty good with the calm anger, but my friend Ryan’s mom was big on yelling the phrase “YOUR ASS IS GRASS!!” which i’m pretty sure was put into the flames comin’ out of that phone there.
Hahaha I love that third panel ๐
And I cracked up at Selkie’s response when Georgie said Moonsong liked her.
Hilarious! ๐
haha i think i skipped that phase of my life, wait till the hormones hit you selkie then everything will change…umm do the hormones hit her? im alittle lost on that one.
And will the hormones hit her for human boys?
Or for boys at all for that matter.
Hm, interesting. Let’s see how Heather’s mom’s reaction continues.
And yes, Georgie is the very definition of awesome. It seems to have kept Selkie sane throughout her time in the orphanage, anyway.
Without reading everyone else’s comments…
…My first reaction was that Selkie’s having a bad reaction to the breadcrumbs in the meatballs, and Georgie is mistaking it for conversation.
I’m just glad Georgie’s there to watch out for Selkie. She’d really be in bad shape if she didn’t have him as a friend…
i would support the selkie moonsong pairing :3 love to all emos~!!! (they’re like sad pandas! you cant help but want to hug them <3)
I’m glad that Georgie stuck around to hang out with Selkie. :3 There’s nothing like having a best friend to get you through the sh*t in life. <3
Also… am I perhaps one of the only person here who can say (I haven't read the other comments…) that my parents never reacted the way Heather's mom did in panel 3 whenever my parents were called to be told I was in trouble?
Thinking back on it, my parents had the patience of saints for dealing with the few times I got myself into trouble… especially because they had already known the problems behind them, and the fact that my school wasn't keen on solving the problems between me and my ex-friend. Selkie's school is better than my middle and high schools were… even if the "tolerance" sign is adding insult to injury.
Just read through the webcomic in the last hour… think im in love ๐
Really would love for the whole Andi thing to work out somehow… coming from an adopted-dum-biological kid household… that’d just make my day, week & year ๐
*cum
I love how cute Selkie and Georgie are together. lol, too bad for him he’ll forever be in the friend zone
you can’t know that; they’re only eight now.
Sandy and Wu? Was that a wink to Sandra and Woo the comic about the damn racoon?
Heather’s mom’s reaction reminds me of Mrs Weasley and the Howler.
Hehehe, me too. xD If she puts another TOE out of line, they’ll bring her straight back home!
“…the big angry fireball is what I remember every phone call to my angry parents feeling like whenever I did something bad.”
Same here XDD.
So glad you kept the flaming phone, cause that is just so awesome. Perfectly fitting! I think everyone’s had one of those at one point or another, hehe.
Not that her favorite superhero is A…. *Zacula’s brain at this point has caught up with his fingers and threatened to personally force them to do homework unless he avoids the terrible joke they were going for* …mazing Spider-Man. Yes. Spider-Man. Totally who I was going for.
All these kids are coming out of this with MASSIVE complexes because of how big a deal was made out of it. ugh.
I’m reading this comic again and I really want to get going, but I just had to make a comment about how much I looove Georgie right here! ๐
I’m so glad Selkie has such a good best friend! And Sandy and Wu, too! I hadn’t realised before re-reading the comic that they had been present from the very beginning, too ๐ Love your work ๐
