And he can’t even tell them that… Can you even imagine what Todd would feel? What Gien would DO to anyone who knew?
Poor guy…
And look at Todd. Look at his face in the last panel. He can tell something is WAY up here. He looks… So sad. I think he can tell that Scar has some sort of connection to Selkie he’s not cognizant of… One that Scar can’t act on. Godfather, or the Sarnothi equivalent, would have been my guess if we didn’t already hear it from the Eel’s mouth.
You know, I’ve always had a concern that if Selkie’s mom came back into the picture, how would she and Todd work things out. Now I have am having the same concerns for Scar and Todd. Way to leave us with a cliffhanger before the weekend Dave!
I think that Scar just wants to be involved with Selkie, not take custody of her. Given his history, however, I can understand why Todd would be leery of even THAT much.
I do wonder if Scar even officially relinquished his parental rights, or if he even had them to begin with – who knows how sarnothi do birth certificates. Like did he even know about Selkie before she showed up in the colony?
He obviously knew who Selkie was before she visited, and that it was supposed to be secret. Maybe to protect Selkie from his past as a bad guy (we don’t know how deep that goes yet) or because that was part of the agreement between him and Selkie’s mother that allowed him to live through missing a hand, half his face, and neck, or some other reason, he was shocked that Gien would mention it…
There’s no way he’s telling Pohl the truth about why he’s there. Now we find out how good he is at creative lying. If he’s bad at it, Pohl and Todd will know he’s lying. Just a tiny little wedge of mistrust between them because Scar can’t tell the truth.
He doesn’t have to lie. If he says something to the effect of “Plo Quar was important to me, so I want to watch over her daughter”, he’s may well still be technically telling the truth.
Oh, good thought! I mean, it may still seem strange since he credits Plo Quar with the loss of half his face, his arm, and his voice. But she ALSO made the replacement arm and synthetic voice gear for him, didn’t she? I seem to remember something about that as well.
So hopefully this is the direction Scar takes his answer. Not a lie but not necessarily the whole truth, either.
Scar was saying that Plo Quar was the reason why he had the scar and needed the voice box and replacement arm, not that she made those things for him. Scar probably made those things himself after Plo Quar split since he is an Echo himself.
I like Todd’s body language there. He knows this conversation is going to be awkward and possibly painful for several people involved, but he needs to hear it – and he wants to offer Scar some moral support, at least.
Oof, Scar looks so sad in that panel.
Oh, this poor guy. I get he screwed up in the past, but he just wanted to see his daughter.
