Had to tweak dialogue for the last panel. Original line was a dark joke that I found funny, but decided it wasn't tonally appropriate. "Last time I got in trouble, Mom was so mad she said next time she'd throw me a Donner Party." For my non-American readers, TLDR: it's a cannibalism joke.
Ah, the Gospel according to Bill and Ted!
I don’t get the reference and I saw Bill and Ted.
Seriously? “Be excellent to each other.” was the literal motto and message of the entire first movie.
And: “Party on, Dudes!”
I immediately thought of Bill and Ted and their excellent adventure, too!
She still thinks Selkie’s a lesbian, can’t wait to see how this plays out.
You don’t give weight to the idea that she is 8 years old and has yet to develop anything comparable to a sex drive yet? O_o
I’d urge you to consider the paradox that straight kids develop crushes around that age (and earlier!) and no one thinks it’s sexual or related to a sex drive, but when it comes to queerness it’s suddenly too early. 8 years old is a perfectly normal age to be having crushes and showing queer preferences – loads of queer people have said that they “knew” as early as then, and Jessie might be drawing from her own experience/the experience of her peers.
Too true.
All news to me.
I guess I was a late bloomer.
I also didn’t think Jessie was necessarily inferring anything about sexual orientation at all. The immediate contest suggests not being able to help having names that abbreviate to dirty words.
For me, it’s the speculating on the sexual orientation (in any direction) of a small child that seems inappropriate (particularly with a voyeur’s eagerness).
I wasn’t implying anything about Selkie at all. I’m only addressing Alphaghoul’s post.
>I also didn’t think Jessie was necessarily inferring anything about sexual orientation at all.<
I would probably agree with you, except for the WINK. That giant WINK that says, "Yes, Selkie, I know exactly what you are going through. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt."
And then back in
https://selkiecomic.com/comic/selkie1267/
when Jessie told Todd that Selkie was crushing on another girl.
@ Alpo
OR… the wink means, “you know what I’m saying… right?”
and is referencing Selkie’s previous below-the-belt insult.
I brought that up earlier, I just didn’t want to mention it everytime, the teacher said they were too young to be attracted to eachother. Also why didn’t it show my icon that time?
For some reason I thought that Jessie was a bit too young to use a reference like that, and it says something disturbing about my own age that I’ve gone from the assumption that *everybody* has seen the movies I grew up with to assuming that anyone under 30 *hasn’t*.
I’m at the “desperately trying to arrange time to ensure that my nearly-adult niephlings see all the good films” stage. Bill & Ted is a staple.
I’m actually kinda annoyed that they’ve all seen The Land Before Time, because I kinda wanted to see their first experience with that one XD
I don’t know why you cut the joke, Dave. Frankly, it would have been more realistic for a teacher to make a joke like that and then later be like, “Oh shit, I shouldn’t have said that joke to kids.”
That’s the kind of stuff that makes it more real.
In any event, I value the way you see the school system. I don’t know how much it’s changed, but back when I was in school, no only did teachers not stop bullies, but some of the teachers were bullies themselves.
Apparently now teachers let security guards throw 9-year-olds out in the cold without a jacket. Honestly think I’d have preferred that than having shoes thrown at me for things I didn’t do.
You should have done the original joke. That would have been adorable.
Is Donner Party the one that’s referenced in “The Shining”? Or was that another cannibalism event?
Neither, it’s one of Santa’s reindeer.
A forum I’m on, man said that whenever he is at a restaurant, and has to wait for a table, so they ask his name, he tells them Donner.
That way eventually you will hear over the loudspeaker, “Donner party of two”.
The best way to do that is tell the greeter a higher number of people then are actually in your party. That way when you get called and they see three instead of four and question it, you can say … “yeah… but it was a really long wait”
“Last time I got in trouble, Mom was so mad she said next time she’d throw me a Donner Party.”
AOC approves
… by “AOC” you mean “a pro-Trump plant at an AOC rally”, right?
keep the insanity out of a webcomic’s comments, please. And for that matter both of you keep the politics out of it as well.
Dave, did you go and make “Nobody” a mod for the comments? I thought you were the only ine with Ban-Hammer powers?
A Mod is No One.
(real answer: no, I’m the only moderator. I think Nobody is just expressing dislike of a political topic rearing it’s head.)
That’s a most *excellent* class rule. Hopefully, the kids can stop being bogus.
Is the jump from comic number 1280 to 1781 intentional? Or a mistake?
~Z
Um…. oops. Time-skip?
1781! Skipped over the War for Independence! Time to write the Bill of Rights!
while i *get* the reference to the Donner Party… what i DON’T get is *WHY* Giselle’s mom would even MAKE a comment about cannibalism when her kid gets in trouble?? what does *cannibalism* have to do with ANYTHING as a typical kid-getting-in-trouble type of punishment response? it just doesn’t make sense to me, sorry… i’m glad you went with the new line.
It’s a clever way to say “Now I know why some animals eat their young.” A common phrase uttered by exasperated parents when their children are acting up.
Not gonna lie, I laughed harder at the transcript… That might say something not so great about my personality.
…Giselle, is everything okay at home? Do you need to talk?
About Me: I’m a die-hard Pegasister! My greatest wish for the show is that the rest of the mane six become alicorns. I also love Disney, Pixar (especially Finding Nemo and Coco. Those are my two favorites), and Dreamworks. I’m also an animal-lover, especially animals that live in the ocean (my big dream in life is to become a member of Seaworld’s marine life rescue team). My favorite animals are sea lions and orcas. I love mythology, with my favorite mythological creatures are Selkies, creatures that are seals in the water, and shed there skins to become human on land.
