-EDIT 8-14-2019- I apologize for this, but the next Selkie comic will be up on Friday’s update. I need to take a sick day. Thank you for understanding.
Today's edition of the Secret Commentary is empty, because Dave failed to come up with something for it.
I don’t quite get what just happened. Can someone help this forgetful old man?
Tehk saw that the flowers were addressed to Te Fahn. The assumption in the class now would be that Selkie has a crush on her– not what Selkie was going for.
Yeahhhhh…this was super poorly handled. There is no reason they had to do this in front of the class. None. They humiliated several students for zero reason.
selkie tried sending flowers to te fahn from george as the secret admirer.
well, it’s more like a class 9 cuz te fahn was freaking out about selkie taking revenge so that’s probably out the window now… that said it’s gonna be an interesting conversation next time it comes up. also curious what keisha is gonna say about this particular attempted shenanigan.
And really this would have been the reaction even if the plan went off as uh… planned.
Agreed. I know from personal experience what a class 10 is, and this doesn’t come close.
Te Fahn now has to explain to the class that she isn’t attracted to Selkie, and deal with everyone asking her 501 questions about Female X Female Saronthi romance which she has no clue how to answer, *and* she’s a very shy person that can’t handle pressure well, **and** she was expecting Selkie to do *something* to get payback on her, ***and*** despite this she was fully trusting George, Selkie’s best friend, that Selkie wouldn’t do anything crazy to her…that she just did.
Add all this up and Class 10 is pretty accurate.
Suprised no one is calling out Tehk though. Selkie set up the kindling but Tehk ignited the bonfire by calling out Te Fahn’s name.
Maybe F+F / M+M romance is totally normal in Sarnothi culture, and Te Fahn is down for it.
Frankenstein’s, they’re in elementary school. They’re around 8-9 years old. Now, maybe a crush is plausible, but sending flowers and having a serious romance isn’t, regardless of gender.
I agree, Tehk is a total jerk here. At least in-comic, he is getting called out for it, though (panel 4) — this makes me feel better.
Nice use of colors to symbolize fucking! Took me a second, I knew it was the word fuck by context, but the symbolism was goddamn spot on!
Poor Te Fahn.
Idk how this ended up as a reply to you lol
I don’t mind, I like attention! haha
But agreed. Everyone involved here is having a hard time.
Everyone except Thek. I’ll bet even George is hurt and confused. What can I say except this is Class 9 levels of Clustiferrous.
(Having made three class 10 mistakes in the last 40 years, I’ll give this one a 9, but this is only a 9, not a ten.)
Nice expression work! I can really hear the tone when Selkie speaks in that last panel!
Yep, she really did screw that up herself quiet nicely. And probably went to far.
The triumphant return of the symbol swears! Honestly while I love just about every part of this comic, and I do, the way you show swears has to be one of my favorites. Comics are a visual medium and yet I don’t know of any other comic that does that. Also they’re darned funny.
Eventually the truth about why she did what she did will come out and Te-Fahn and Georgie may be flattered by her consideration, in the long run it will probably make them better friends, just my opinion 🙂
So, this now raises the question — do Sarnothi blush?
Te Fahn blushed at Georgie back in strip #1223
Oh, god. Poor Selkie. Poor Te-Fahn. You can just *see* the resignation pouring off of Selkie- and the classroom laughing like that- imagine if she really *had* been buying the flowers because she liked Te-Fahn? If this *hadn’t* been a simple misunderstanding?
If she really *had* been starting to realize, “Oh shit I think I’m bi”, and trying to express her first crush on a girl?
I’ve been in that situation. It’s *utterly soul crushing*.
You have my sympathies. Life is hard… It’s got it’s highlights, and it’s bad days, but sometimes— once in a while: it tries to crush your soul. And when coming out goes bad, it’s not usually the end of your life, or the world, or the universe… but that’s what it can feel like for some. Sorry you had a bad time of it.
Yeah, just like too many real schools, everything about the way this was handled was wrong and unnecessarily embarrassed multiple kids. Flowers should not have been brought into the room. Selkie not called out in front of the room. Flowers not brought near student who could read the tag. If I was Todd or Te Fahn’s folks I would be furious at how this was handled.
I agree. We were allowed to recieve stuff, including flowers, at my middle school (my mom would sometimes send them for my birthday) but they’d be held at the office to be picked up, if only because interupting the class over flowers is rediculous.
Still not as incompetent as the teachers in the incident I described in the comments to strip 1257.
Selkie should count herself lucky it didn’t go even worse.
I hope Te Fahn doesn’t think too badly of Selkie for this. I’m worried she might tell Georgie that she just doesn’t like Selkie very much after this. I’ve seen kids hold a grudge over the silliest things and stop being friends because of it. Te Fahn was humiliated and she very well may assume this was Selkie’s revenge or retribution for calling her weird. Unless Selkie comes clean about what the flowers were for (which may drive a wedge between Te Fahn and Georgia or worse, make them both angry at Selkie for making assumptions) it’s not a stretch to assume this was a revenge plot… particularly after Selkie said what she did the last few pages.
Selkie will probably never live this down.
She’s going to have a hell of a time explaining herself to her dad and the principal.
not to mention trying to explain to both Georgie, and Te Fahn
that she isn’t crushing on Te Fahn, but was trying to get them together
as she and Keisha had noticed they seemed to like each other.
Of course this will result in ruining any future meddling, Selkie or Keisha might have had planned.
Or possibly be the set-up for future meddling by Keisha and Selkie.
i bet te fahn is very confused now… at least she knows selkie doesn’t hate her anymore. but she’s probably reevaluating all those times that selkie butted in with her conversations with georgie because she wanted attention.
honestly though, once they knew it was probably selkie they REALLY should have just waited until after school to discuss this in privacy with her (and maybe te fahn) rather than just pulling the whole thing into the open like that. god can you imagine if selkie had ACTUALLY liked her like that. the amount of homophobic bullying could be insane.
She could think it was intended as a prank to embarrass her, too.

Or kill someone. Of the five guys I knew growing up who I suspected of being gay; four committed suicide. Including three I was long-time friends with. They were smart, cool, witty, kind, quiet, and better than most everyone at most everything. Except being straight and being accepted for who they were…
Why do I feel like this is a callback to when Te Fahn was using the word Harem instead of friend?
Been thinking of that since Selkie got pegged as the flower-sender!

Oh comment software, you so wacky!
While I’m here, though: What exactly is the Sarnothi attitude to homosexuality? Is this a world where everybody gets along on that front, or is there a risk of backlash from at least one of the sentient races in this story?
Dammit Tehk 🤦🏻♂️
