There will be a normal comic update sometime this evening, but in the meantime, please accept this bubbling vial of mysterious goop.
-EDIT- Comic added and url updated accordingly. The Valentine extra has been moved to… about five pixels below this sentence.
Today's edition of the Secret Commentary is empty, because Dave failed to come up with something for it.
Yummy mysterious goop 😀 Thanks Selkie!
It’s probably Mock-Turtle soup, made from mock-turtle necks. …(or is that mock turtle-necks). IDK! Looks tasty to me.
Whether wool or polyester, mock turtle-necks do not sound very appetizing.
And a Happy Valentine’s to you all!
Happy Valentines Day, Selkie!
Humans are genetically wired to find babies cute, and most animals (humans included) often feel nurturing and protective of any thing that displays immature characteristics (resembles a juvenile). It makes me wonder how far this would carry and if we could recognize it in another humanoid race and would it even translate.
Anyways I find Selkie here totes adorb, even though I recognize that someone not used to her cuteness might see this and be surprised instead of delighted.
Sure we could! Here’s some baby orangutans: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9rk8WtFG_M
But baby orangutans share many similarities with baby humans. You don’t normally get the same response with, say, baby spiders or baby starfish.
you just google baby octopus and come back to me.
Hey, that’s how some of my favorite stories begin!
Got to remember to look this evening.
Kids can be so innocent. I learned a long time ago it’s not sad to distrust a family member that has been well known in the past to be toxic.
What’s sad are the people who continue to allow those family members to continue to hurt them and the people around them.
Amanda is a brat, she’s spoiled and she’s been well known to be a bully in the past.
Yeah, I get it, these kids are like eight, but Selkie’s distrust is warranted.
Agreed. One thing that finally helped cut ties with my narcissistic, emotionally and mentally abusive/neglectful mother, was the epiphany that if it was anyone but my mother I would be calling it abuse, if it was a friend’s spouse I would be counseling getting away from them, why on Earth was the fact that she gave birth to me a reason ahe was allowed to continue to harm me and I had to accept it?
Yet there are still people appalled to hear I cut her out of ny life, because “she’s your mother, you should forgive her!”
It is sad, as Te Fahn says, but Selkie is not wrong in distrusting Amanda until she has real evidence Amanda has changed. And nothing we have seen says that has happened yet.
I hear ya. I get that, “She’s your MOTHER.” line, too. Usually from people who had happy childhoods and who simply can’t fathom parents being anything but good.
The distrust is warranted, and nobody has to stick with family merely because they’re family; I’ve heard the principle that if someone levels “but they’re FAMILY!” at you to treat someone nicely who’s (a) been bad to you before and (b) hasn’t shown any significant reform, you need to turn that line around: If we’re family, why are THEY not treating ME right? (“If we’re family, why did she molest me?” “If we’re family, why did he steal my things?” “If we’re family, why did she spread nasty rumors about me?”)
That said, Te Fahn is correct that it’s a sad state to be in, a lack of trust existing between close family members. Of course, she doesn’t understand how or why this has happened — any of the context — but she is correct that it’s less than ideal, and perhaps a little tragic. Though I’d imagine that the Sarnothi put even more stock into family bonds than we do.
The question is whether Selkie and Amanda can move toward a state of trust in the future, or whether that bridge has been burnt. And I imagine that they can — it’s just going to take a while, and some significant improvement from both of them, as well as an acceptance of being vulnerable with each other (e.g. admitting defeat, accepting limitations/boundaries, etc.).
I love the valentine, Dave, but I am concerned why she still has a hand behind her back…
More goop. 😉
…loaded into a SuperSoaker.
Yes. Yes, keep the comic strip format.
Awwwwwwwww
