I might be leaving this one uncolored for the time being, because I’m falling a bit back into old bad habits, and I’d like to try to get caught back up tonight.
Almost uploaded this without censoring the fucks. ...Fuck, wait.

she’s such a handful xD
Again, I love seeing the work-in-progress uploads! No worries there.
When are you taking your vacation and will you need fan submissions to fill the time?
I’m not going to take a full vacation this year because my brother and sister and their families aren’t able to come for christmas this year, so I don’t need that much time off. I may or may not do a filler day for Christmas Eve, but that’s undecided.
I’m pretty sure i speak for all of us here when i say “Go ahead and take yourself a very merry filler day… or two… or three…” we won’t mind too much either way… π
for one thing it will help you get back in the groove and second, if you really wanted to you could continue your drawing of the comics, just not posting them in order for you to build up a buffer for when “life happens” and you get swamped by other things..
Well, part of the point of vacation was to let you get a buffer together. So it might be even *more* effective if you’re not taking so much time off from drawing the comic itself. Like I said, I don’t at all mind the unfinished art days, but when you’ve had so many recently (like, the past 4-6 months? unsure), it might well be that you’re running yourself a little ragged and need to get a day or three ahead of the game.e
I still wish I could manage to get that far ahead with my YouTube channel. I even dropped from 6 vids/week to 1 vid/week (totally necessary) and I’m still putting vids out late Sunday night instead of getting them done faster. But that’s mostly because I’m balancing several projects at once right now, and YouTube is low priority except to make sure there’s a vid up each week.
…ugh, stupid stuck e key, adding random e’s in places where they don’t belong, on a site where I can’t edit my own comments…
(And it needn’t be for Christmas week; consider taking part of January or February off.)
Might help if they actually explain why to her.
Gah! I love this webcomic!
Selkie is so real, it makes me wonder about Dave and Drones, and actual families, and if Dave just has a hidden mic in their house, and tyypes up what they say. He only changes their names for the webcomic.
Dave: Iβd like to try to get caught back up tonight
Gene: given the weather lately, as long as Up is the only thing you catch, I’ll be happy.
Agent Smith made a chore deal with his teenage step-son to let him berate Selkie in the first place and HE is complaining that she’s not taking this seriously? Really?!?
And Todd is complaining about her using exactly the same phrasing she just heard from Benny.
Benny broke the deal he made with Avery, and cussed anyway, which Avery was expecting (sadly). If Todd is in agreement with Avery, then he should call Benny out for in swearing in Public, but Todd is unlikely to allow ANYBODY call Selie on her swearing in public, … Except the School. So yeah, Selkie just wants Todd mad at her for that, not for glowing in school.
Still just because Benny got away with it, Selkie wants to be grounded until she’s 50! (Not 45, as previously discussed)
Why’ll Selkie does need a bit of a talking too, this Echo stuff was going to come out Selkie or no Selkie. Hell who’s to say another kid like Selkie would not do the same.
Selkie is likely the only point of failure. Echoes of the other clans would have been noticed and trained amongst their peoples. They would be more disciplined, as they would have been taught from a young age. Remember, Selkie was never taught not to bite… she wasn’t even aware she is venomous.
Also, I’m willing to bet that any Echoes that were in Sarnoth are “Sar’Teri by adoption”, now.
that or, on a much grimmer note: those non-Sar’teri Echos are DEAD…
though i’d hope that they are either currently on their way to the refugee camps as we speak, or have recently arrived and are getting settled in (depending on comic time-line of course) and Pohl and “the Old Farmer” will get a much needed reprieve from being the only two Echos available to the refugees to do all that is required of them…
considering how much their society seems to rely on Echoes to keep the literal machinery working, I doubt Sar’Teri would let any go, either to the refugee camps or the Shadowlands.
The last panel is so freakin’ cute! Selkie channels Lucille Ball-level mischief (if Lucille Ball was born into these times, I’m sure she would drop the F-bomb). π
Upon re-watching Metalocalypse, I’m wondering if Sarnothians are simply just funny-looking Scandinavians given initial “speech impediments.” …or maybe Toki and Skwisgaar were really Sarnothians… It may explain why they were always recording music in a sub. XD
Continued Adult Fail, yep. Also not asking Selkie what happened (though she hasn’t been forthcoming either). Dave writes exactly the adults i dealt with as a kid – it’s amazingly realistic…
There’s an ongoing cultural problem, where children are rarely considered/treated as the ‘small, still forming adults’ that they are, and are commonly considered as, essentially, smart pets. Adults don’t work to truly prepare children for adulthood (as that ‘turning into an adult’ is actually something that many parents subconsciously fear) but rather attempt to ‘train’ the children around them to behave in a non-disruptive manner, while attempting to not ‘soil’ their inherent childish qualities.
That is an excellent analysis. Explains a lot.
Yeah, you nailed it, the explaination.
I can confirm this is a thing in the US as well. And me being a stranger actively trying to teach small life lessons with children I randomly bump into earns me either confusion or anger from said adults.
Being treated as a smart pet made me the stereotypical “all book sense no common sense” type of person for a long time growing up, because the adults raising me never ATTEMPTED to teach me common sense, and still had the gall to make fun of me for the problem that they created.
She’s eight. And you guys haven’t exactly been taking this seriously either. Considering one of you made a deal with your teen to berate her.
But I guess Selkie’s the only one in the wrong. I swear it’s like Todd only ever steps up as a parent when it makes him look good. Otherwise he’s just yelling at Selkie for responding to being bullied. And no Truck doesn’t count because it made him look good in front of the other parents when he talked about it. Also got someone fired in the process. (Made him quit but similar thing.)
oh please that’s the kind of thing an older brother would do. Hell I think I DID do that. I’m certain at some point I traded some extra chores for the chance to let my brother know something along those lines…
Yeah that totally makes what he did okay. Bullying a kid that’s so much younger than himself. Just for chores. Eyup. Perfectly fine. I see no fault in that logic. -____-
One accurate comment does not a bully make.
Todd’s collar keeps changing. First it was folded, then it was mandarin, now it’s fuzzy like Selkie’s hat.
On this page that change is because heβs taking his jacket off. As for past pages… time travel?
It’s almost like these are legitimate words that people will naturally use to express themselves.
I mean. I would have done the same thing at her age. You can understand ya done fucked up and still want to use the excuse to get away with something. But Selkie knows she fucked up. Sometimes you have to lean into it instead of just falling and crumbling like “omg i know i’m so sorry i’m so terrible please punish me”. She’s in trouble and she knows it, so milk it. It’s like…if you’re off to the gallows, might as well stuff your face with cake while you can. And that feels so true to Selkie’s character. It’s not fair, but life isn’t fair. And now we have a pretty good idea of how Selkie thinks. She can know she fucked up and still have a sense of humor about it. That’s what makes her such a special kid sometimes, and it’s why I’ve been reading since 2011 :3
I love this comment. Yes, and she’s has that same core backbone since we met her, sad and isolated in the orphanage, being bullied but not surrendering. She’s older now, more secure. Nevertheless, this is the same girl who drew a picture of vomit because it was a pretty color.
The transcript joke forced a violent laugh from my throat. Curse you, Dave!
AH!, she’s using the Vorlon Tense of the word “yes“
At least she’s not reciting Vogon Poetry. That’s a plus!
Dave: do think about taking some time off. Quite a few webcomics artists are doing so for the holidays. I’ve been encouraging it because I know all too well what burnout feels like. (And one of my favorite artists, of Lapse, just gave in to it, and it makes me sad.)
Having just looked at that comic for the first time: Wow. You don’t expect a webcomic artist to start off that skilled.
Also, started in 2011? I have a binge awaiting me! (After I finish my projects. So, not for a while.)
I hope the creator’s circumstances improve. Sent them an encouraging tweet in case it helps. Thanks for pointing me at their work!
