Was Amanda punished for all that? On one hand that would suck since she was telling the truth. On the other if Andi thought she’s spreading lies and let it slide – that would paint a bad picture of Andi’s parenting.
I don’t think there’d be any reason to punish a kid for telling whoppers that are so patently untrue as to be disbelieved by anyone who isn’t a devotee of the Weekly World News…
Todd, she’s an 8 year old… and been in the close company of others that age, for the last three years, in the orphanage… of COURSE they know about the spit… learning how to spit PROPERLY was a mandatory course at school at that age… and it only takes one time for somebody to “accidentally” get hit with said spit that would make it obvious.
If Selkie, herself, didn’t know about the poison saliva (and you recall they had to PROVE IT to her – that it not only affected Todd, but also Antoine and Marta), why would anyone at the orphanage know?
During that discussion Todd asked her how she couldn’t know – hadn’t it ever happened at the orphanage? She said that kissing was not allowed, but she figgered since he was her Dad it was all right.
My guess is that Amanda might have done or said something obnoxious, and sometimes, as kids do, Selkie might have licked or bitten her as kids do (like sometimes, if someone covers your mouth, you might lick them). Amanda broke out, like Todd did, but at the time, Selkie and anyone within hearing distance might have thought that Amanda was just being a jerk to Selkie, rather than Amanda bringing up a legitimate complaint.
Maybe. But it seems to me that in a state-run orphanage, if one of the kids broke out into some strange rash, the folks running the place would be ALL OVER IT. Want to find out what it is, and if it’s contagious. If Amanda broke out, she’d have been in the infirmary, and she’d know, and some adult would know (probably Lilian), and the adult would warn Selkie, and tell her not to like/spit on any of the other kids.
They had dinner at the Cheese-and-Seafood place with the clueless waitress.
That’s when Benny called her out on her fears and, I think, earned from respect from Amanda. Whether or not it’s a “crush” or not remains to be seen, though.
If I had to guess, I’d say Amanda learned it from Selkie, somewhere in the exchange of “I’m tougher than you!” sibling oneupmanship. I don’t think this has happened on the page, though I may have missed something.
Once Selkie realized that poison saliva wasn’t a deal-breaker for any of the Smiths, the girl who is Doctor Terrorhammer would surely be quite happy to think of it as a feature, not a bug.
Yeah, this was my thought. He’s trying to be gentle, but she’s completely out of the loop. This is certainly the “Yeah, I have some things to explain… Girls? Come here. Andi? Watch this: Selkie, have a glass of water…”
How do we know Todd has never been taught how to handle classified material and how to consult with the right people before he spills it and sets himself up for 10-20 in Federal prison?
i´m so looking forward to andi´s face on the next update, when she has to realise that all that ‘crazy stuff’ her daughter tried to tell her is actuallly true 😉

Should have had his talk a long time ago really.

Way to let the ball drop there Todd – you just admitted your daughter is more informed than her mother.

It took me a minute to realize that all that was the absolute truth. Even the CIA one. ^¿^
The Force (of denial) is strong in this one.
Is the transcript canon and Amanda has a crush on Benny?? Haha that’s adorable, and it’d be a delight to see THAT relationship when they’re older
Wait, in which strip did Amanda even meet Benny? I thought she’d interacted with the Pohls a bit, not the CIA family.
…I may have to reread the archive. I’m losing touch with canonical details.

In the words of Mark Twain, “Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt.”
Man. Andi is gonna be sooo embarrassed.
Also Amanda’s more clever than she gets credit for. Poor kid. :/ Cassandra truth stinks.

Fairly sure it’s technically toxic spit, not poison, but that’s a level of semantics unimportant to most 8 year olds. Or most adults, honestly.
…Didn’t Andi see Pohl when the cluster happened at the Aquarium?
Yea, probably just assumed they have Selkie’s “condition” rather than that they are magical fish people.
Dear GOD, Todd, can you screw this up any more than you already have?
“A grain of truth?” Jeez, just TELL her. And be ORGANIZED about it, fer crissakes.
You’re letting the one with no knowledge drive the conversation. No wonder you two had fights.

You look like a nutter, but only briefly…
