Welp. Here is the Friday Selkie comic. …on SUNDAY.
I’m sorry for the massive delay everyone. I can’t even really blame the server outage on Friday, Saturday just kind of entirely slipped away from me.
Regular Monday update is still planned, I’ll be drawing it tonight as I normally would on a Sunday.
"It's my party, she can cuss if she wants too..."
I’m actually kind of surprised Selkie is that interested in the makeup kit … Or is it just the size of the thing she’s reacting too?
Could be a bit of both. Maybe its even a nice brand?
I wouldn’t know, I barely comb my hair before I leave the house 😉
My guess is that it’s a “grown-up” thing that Amanda now has and she doesn’t. (Though she has no idea if she’d even be able to use it, since it’s probably plant-based.)
As I understand it, it’s not that Selkie is allergic. That’s just the cover story. Her problems are with plants as food — her digestive system isn’t set up to handle them well, and her instinctive food likes and dislikes are those of a carnivorous species. Plant-based makeup, or clothing, shouldn’t be a problem.
The real reason she wouldn’t be able to use a human makeup kit is color. Think about how much of makeup is about enhancing eye colors and skin tones. The kit Heather chose for Amanda, a blue-eyed redhead, would not be useful at all for Keisha. But, Keisha-suitable makeup kits do exist. Alas for Selkie, she’s going to find out that no cosmetic manufacturer is selling kits for periwinkle skin!
While she may not be able to use the concealer/blush colours, eyeshadow, mascara and lipstick could be a possibility.
Same would go for Keisha. Dark skin and bright makeup colours often look ethereal in their beauty. If we could post pictures I’d spam Lupita’s gloriousness until the end of time XD
Well, but it’s a question of shades. Most lipstick colors that would look great on Keisha would be garish and overpowering against Amanda’s fair skin. Unless, of course, that’s the effect she’s going for, on purpose… fashion can dictate some very odd ‘looks’. Andi isn’t likely to stop her, so when she’s older, I suppose all bets will be off.
I expect, though, that Heather’s mom would have helped choose a kit for Amanda that would be not only subtly flattering to her complexion, but also age-appropriate. Peaches or pinks, rather than splashy scarlets.
Also might not do too well depending on the texture of her skin! But come to think she has gills, instead of a semi-permeable layer like frogs do.
Her skin might still be sensitive to whatever is in that makeup. Lots of people have allergies to their contents. 🙂
I’ve been learning about the distinction among allergies, intolerances, and sensitivities, as regards food. And, apparently, that there are multiple levels of allergies.
“Allergy” as doctors have it is “Is this likely to kill you?” Which means that if you simply break out in a rash, some doctors think that’s not severe enough to call an “allergy.” On the rationale that, hey, if the thing’s gonna make you uncomfortable but not kill you, then if they need to use it to save your life, they can do that, but if it’s just as likely to kill you, they can’t.
Reasoning makes sense.
Intolerances, like lactose intolerance, are digestive issues, and Selkie’s aversion would likely fall under that, as a quite strong intolerance. If eating a specific food gives you a ton of gas (more than is normal for that food — digesting beans, for example, gives everyone gas, but some have more problems than others), or cramps, upset stomach, heartburn, etc., that’s an intolerance. My brother appears to have an intolerance to tomatoes.
Sensitivies are less than either of these, but still make you feel crummy after eating the thing. I’m thinking I may have an apple sensitivity, since drinking a large glass of apple juice often makes me sick to my stomach, while other juices don’t do this. That’s why I’m on an allergen-restricted diet, so I can pinpoint what I’m reacting to.
I’m kinda surprised that I never got taught these distinctions earlier (I’m almost 40); they seem useful to know.
Regardless of species limitations, I’m sure her value system is typical of an eight-year-old girl. She might *want* to experiment with makeup without realizing that she might be incompatible with it.
Then again, knowing Selkie she wants to make herself even MORE terrifying for easier subjugation of the world.
I love how Kenneth just laughs his butt off at the swear.
Whoo site’s back up! I was a sad owl for a while </3
Also, I love, love, love that the reaction isn't "she's too young for makeup." I was forbidden even to LOOK at makeup until I was like, sixteen. And by then everyone else had honed their skills to the point where I didn't even wanna attempt to catch up. To this day all I can do is eyeshadow and pretty eyeliner designs?.
Probably doesn't help my skin tone is difficult to pin down, haha. The joys of being mixed ?
I love that I never got the makeup bug. I very occasionally wear lipstick for a special occasion, or dress up for Halloween, but that’s it. One fewer chore for my day. That, and back when I tried eye gunk, I figured I’d prefer not to have my eyes bother me and have makeup get into my eyes by accident, rather than look more like the rest of society’s women but have to put up with that annoyance.
My mom still gets annoyed, occasionally, that I don’t shave my legs 😛
Anyway, for those who want to wear makeup, I see little reason to forbid them — if they get an allowance and choose to buy it themselves, rather than expecting the parents to pay for it at an early age. Same reason that I’m letting my nephew (14) buy just about whatever he wants with the allowance I give him: Even if I disagree with the choices, the fact of him having to make choices about where money goes (and, thus, missing out on other things that he then can’t afford) is the important part right now.
The dividing line, for me, is body modification. I would not let my kid (either gender) get a piercing or tattoo until at least sixteen — when they would have a better idea of what it means to get something you can’t just wipe away when you’re done with it. And parents who get their kid’s ears pierced before the kid is old enough to decide for themselves (“because it’s CUTE”) are, AFAIC, committing child abuse: Babies don’t know what’s causing them pain or why — why cause them pain deliberately, just for looks?
This may be a mistake – Selkie may, in a later-provoked fit of anger, dump the kit on Amanda’s head…or Amanda may break it open and “experiment”. Hopefully the kit will stay intact long enough for Amanda to get it home so Andi can teach her the basics.
I really hate censorship. Now I’m going to be wondering which word got scribbled out.
I’m fairly sure it was “Holy SITHS”
Todd is obviously more inclined on Selkie being a Jedi
I dont understand the girls problem with the possibility of socks in the present. You cannot have enough socks! xD
(But seriously, i need get new clothing once about a five years, from ANY clothing, except for the socks! They never enough!)
