Um. So. How deep did that “blast” penetrate? Did Selkie’s mom kinda-sorta lobotomize him, to bring about this apparent personality change or did Scar have a legitimate change of heart?
Nothing gives you perspective like losing about a quarter of your entire body at a time and then become as weak as the people you’ve been actively oppressing.
Well my theory is the change of heart came when support for his injury’s did not. From what we know of his clan they regard fighting prowess in the highest regard and one who can no longer fight could possibly be considered worthless. They mentioned a slave uprising at the dinner so perhaps the weak and infirmed are used as indentured labour?
i agree, with his (former) robes being marked by fangs i guess he was some kind of enforcer/overseer, and after loosing his arm and thus the ability to fight, he was chucked aside as useless…..maybe even ‘encouraged’ to kill himself since he has no more use?….which gave him a much needed reality check as to how screwed up his (former) life was – thus heĀ“s glad to selkieĀ“s mom for helping him see the light so to speak, even if it cost him a limb
Lemme get this straight? They are going to the Diner to get dinner and eat “Pants.”? Sounds like Monty Python, “New from director John Cleese, ‘A fish Named Pants,’ starring Kevin Klein, with Billy Crystal as the voice of Pants.
Wasn’t there a subversive song making fun of the various factions in the U.K. about eating someone’s clothing? Or someone wearing clothing that was made from food items? … His shirt was made of cream cheese, and his pants were made of haggis?
We eat steak and wear the leather, so I fail to see the weirdness… Humans have been wearing the skins of our food animals since we’ve been wearing skins.
Found it! Name of the song is Aiken Drum, wiki says it is about the Jacobite Rebellion, but a friend of mine who (is?) (does?) (Practices?) Wiccan says that the song is about the Green Man’s helping the Mother provide food for is, if indirectly. Not sure I understand how that matches the song.
Wikipedia has two entirely different versions of the lyrics. The older version begins:
Ken you how a Whig can fight,
Aikendrum, Aikendrum?
It is clearly of Scottish origins and about one of the English civil wars, and has nothing about food. The newer version is _only_ about dressing in food, with Scottish roots revealed in the last verse, where Aiken Drum’s breeches are wearing haggis bags. It looks to me like version two took only the name and perhaps a tune or rhythm scheme from version one. They no more closely related than “The Star Spangled Banner” is to “Anacreon in Heaven”.
He’s wearing some kind of vocalizer, which I would assume can be set to different languages or he wouldn’t be able to talk to some of theory other inhabitants of Havei Jin’Suir.
Panel 2 should read “More blast THAN chop”. I don’t want to nit-pick every little mistake, but in this case it makes the statement completely different by saying that both happened – one THEN the other.
I’m a little curious about your dialect choices here. While Scar’s English is far from perfect, he doesn’t seem to have the problem with plurals that the other Sarnothi with similar language skills have.
His neck device appears to be some kind of speech aid as he lost his voice in the war. I get the impression that it is also translating as best it can from Sarnothi to English. A better translation might be had if looking at the whole sentence, but this might be translating word for word as it’s spoken.
Wow… Scar is an awesome character, Dave. He’s fascinating! And boy did he look like a badass in the past, too! I hope we see more of him:) In panel 2, however, the word is “than”, not “then”.

Usually personality changes caused by brain damage make a person worse rather than better.

War can legitimately change people. Sometimes for the better, sometimes not.
And if it was a legitimate change of heart, what caused that? (I always think of something else after I’ve submitted my post š )

Is it alright that I’m hearing all of Scar’s lines as Heavy Weapons Guy from Team Fortress 2?
Same! “AND THIS. IS MY WEAPON.”
Pretty sure that’s intended. (I seem to remember Dave saying as much.)

It was war,Scar. I doubt anyone was ‘nice’ or ‘good’.
Apparently Scar speaks English?
He’s been speaking English. His text often doesn’t have the marks showing Tensei.

To be fair, he’s been speaking in broken English the entire time.
How do we know he doesn’t mean exactly what he said? Blast… And then a “chop” to remove the damaged appendage?
I considered this, but then why correct Selkie if chopping off his arm is what happened, albeit after a blast.
Because her mom only did the blasting, and then someone else did the chopping.
I’m sure you’re right, but maybe she blasted and then did some chopping afterwards? xD
“Let us show you the dinner, yes?”
“Show me the dinner!
show me the dinner!
show me the dinner!”

I’m wondering this too. He doesn’t do the “pluralses” thing that Selkie and Carrie do.

His teeth are blue in panel two.

Unless he’s referring to the order of events. Got blasted then chopped off?
