The problem is that the people arguing loudly for more war are generally the ones who don’t intend to get hurt in the actual fighting. Deferments, “bone spurs”, etc.
Really? What an interesting turn of phrase regarding a conflict that specifically both Scar and Selkie’s Mom were on opposite sides of. I think Agent Brown might have just accidentally said more than he needed to.
Exactly how is Selkie’s Mom these days, Agent Brown? We know Scar is still alive in spite of how badass a warrior Selkie’s Mom is…
Arguably, the “getting hurt” which Selkie’s mother suffered may well be the whole emotional pain related to having to give up her daughter to adoption to keep said daughter safe.
Though, yeah. She’s labelled a war criminal. Chances are good some significant physical damage may have happened as well.
I had just slipped her in there way back when and left it for people to notice. Nobody did, likely because she’s too small to catch the distinctive skin hue naturally. When i added the tags to the website I decided to slip Plo Quar’s in there and see if people noticed her then. And, uh, yeah that one worked. 😛
More advanced than humans, who have real-world tech for the most part. Low drive to move beyond their lakes have kept them from basically stomping over us up to this point.
So assume Benny is exaggerating, but close enough to the truth that his father doesn’t actually correct him on the facts. So does this mean the civil war involved a “slave uprising” of some kind? Does this have anything to do with Scar’s “disagreement” with his clan? Interesting.
It seems that Scar is a warrior. He doesn’t hold grudges. He fought because that is what he was expected to do. He respected Plo Quor because she was legitimately a warrior in her own right and she bested him. Maybe some of the things his clan was saying didn’t make sense after that, because he looked into her eyes and saw honour, passion, and something worthy of respect. He just had to be beaten before his eyes opened. Then he walked away. Maybe. I don’t know. I know I’ve met people like him. It doesn’t matter which side you fight on. He had to do his duty, she did hers. No disrespect or hate needed.
Two things I don’t get:
1. Why is mister Brown swimming a long distance away from Todd and to Selkie? I thought they were in the exact same spot?
2. I thought Scar fought on the resistance side, as evidence by him saying he was against his clan earlier, but maybe he just switched sides after Selkie’s mom did a number on him.
1. brown is in the same spot in the firt panel, but spots some problem and starts swimming there in panel two
2. scr said in the last strip that he got his three ‘gifts’ from selkie´s mom before he had a change of heart, so he might´ve been a fighter for the bad guys, or merely a passive bystander that became a casulty of war….either way, kudos for his laidback way of dealing with his injuries and absolutely holding no grudge against selkie or her mom for it
….btw, anyone else getting the vibe that its Then who´s causing the trouble brown spotted?
I’m pretty sure the “trouble” is Selkie being told her mom is the one who, for lack of a better term, kicked Scars ass completely & totally (and took an arm, for good measure). Going from “oh, mom was an awesome warrior” to “mom was an awesome warrior, and here’s some of her handiwork” could be a bit of a shock (as the good guys in fiction aimed at younger audiences usually don’t dismember their opponents, no matter how bad they are)
I mean, if Scar was being all angry & brooding & cynical about things, it would probably have lessened the shock (more of a “oh, that’s why he’s angry” feel). Instead, he’s really happy go lucky feeling, and doesn’t appear to hold even an inkling of a grudge for, most likely through some violent means, losing an arm, an eye, a chunk of head/face meat, and whatever’s necessary to freaking talk. While I think Scar would do his best to do his own damage control upon seeing Selkie have a moderate level freakout, Brown coming up is probably best, as he’s from a 3rd group that had no involvement with the conflict, and could (once called down) better express how things were without a bias as to which side was “roght/the good guys”
That aside, I’m about 99% sure Scar was a fighter, and he had some first hand experience fighting Selkie’s mom, and it was an experience he’ll never forget (much as freya said above)
Some people think they can outsmart me. Maybe…..(sniff).. Maybe. I’ve yet to meet one that can outsmart laser.
I should have Scar yell “cry some more!” at one point. 😛
I *am* impressed at Avery’s command of Tensei. Gives me hope that Todd can someday learn it too.
“People on both sides get hurt.”
It’s best to learn this early. The more people who do learn, the less people who will get hurt.
I agree it’s important to learn that early, but I can’t help but suspect it has an unfortunately tiny effect on the amount that get hurt.
The problem is that the people arguing loudly for more war are generally the ones who don’t intend to get hurt in the actual fighting. Deferments, “bone spurs”, etc.
Why do I read Scar’s dialogue in my head in The Heavy’s voice? lol
Because accent and transcript. Dave mentioned in his first or second appearance that that’s what he (Dave) was going for.
Is good approximation, yes? POW! HA HA!

Or maybe I’m reading too much into it.

You forgot the big hurt: most of her clan was killed.
We have seen her mom in the present (on phone so will look yp link later) she looked fine.
There we go: https://selkiecomic.com/comic/selkie122/ (background of second to last panel).
How do you know thats her? Also, how did you SEE that??
She’s tagged, so folks went looking for her.
I had just slipped her in there way back when and left it for people to notice. Nobody did, likely because she’s too small to catch the distinctive skin hue naturally. This isn’t GI Joe kid, people get hurt, war is hell for a reason.
I get the glove and the hairstyle, but what does the necklace achieve? Is it an artificial voice box?
it appears to be that, yes. his larynx may have been damaged so now he speaks with an artificial sarnoth-tech version of a voicebox.
Yes, it’s an artificial voice box. It can be set to standard tensei or to a “trying it’s best” english.
Welp. At least Scar doesn’t wanna hurt Selkie over this…
They have cybernetics, and lasers. How advanced are they?
More advanced than humans, who have real-world tech for the most part. Low drive to move beyond their lakes have kept them from basically stomping over us up to this point.
*Underwater* lasers.
Looking back through the archives, I noticed “He lost an eye and an arm in a SLAVE UPRISING.” https://selkiecomic.com/comic/selkie929/ and “Take Benny’s colorful narrative with a bit of healthy skepticism” https://selkiecomic.com/comic/selkie930/
So assume Benny is exaggerating, but close enough to the truth that his father doesn’t actually correct him on the facts. So does this mean the civil war involved a “slave uprising” of some kind? Does this have anything to do with Scar’s “disagreement” with his clan? Interesting.

Will confirm, Avery is running off to attend to the “just found out my mom crippled a guy” situation.
