No one outside family is allowed to call him that. :3
Still kind of figuring out just HOW curly to make Richard's hair. As the owner of hair that goes from business to clowntown in just a couple weeks, it's a delicate issue.
No one outside family is allowed to call him that. :3
Can’t be “Little Orphan Annie”. He’s not a redhead.
Wrong. Annie isn’t a redhead anymore.
That is blasphemy.
Yes. How dare a black girl play Annie. You’re gross for saying this. Never speak to me again.
There are black redheads. Is it the most common color? No. But they do exist.
Hair color. Gods, I hate when I lack sleep.
I know this. I’ve pointed THIS OUT. But these guys are showing white redheads not black ones.
I’m sorry. I saw that after I scrolled down.
It’s ok.
Yeah, she’s a [racial slur deleted]
-Edit from Dave- I apologize for letting a racial slur slip through my approval. I don’t always keep up with all the hate-speech terms floating around out there.
And you’re a disgusting human being. Go away.
I really wish you’d chill down and not call people disgusting and gross just because they aren’t agreeing with you.
“she’s an effing jig”. Nope. It’s gross. Very gross.
Explain why.
Why. Every time I point something out or explain it,people ignore it and go “Nope. Gimme more proof.” So why bother.
Because I’m tired of you starting shit then calling everyone who disagrees “gross” or “disgusting”.
Control your temper and stop lashing out at everyone or I’ll put you on moderation. You escalate things to massive drama levels when you act like this and I’m really god damned tired of seeing you flip out at people.
Yes. That’s all I ever do. Everytime I’m here. It’s just all I am. Excuse me.
Soooo, Dave… now that you know that MommyWhy was using an ethnic slur, do you have any response to that poster?
Yeah: stop that shit. I’ve also edited it out of the comment but I dunno what to do about all the other comments discussing it because I don’t want to gut out so many people’s comments, but it seems pointless to bother removing the racial reference when everyone is discussing it as well.
Honestly, I’m just so god damn tired of seeing my inbox filled with arguments fights trolling and intermittent drama, I’m becoming rapidly tempted to just disable commenting. Maybe temporarily maybe permanently, I don’t know. I’m going to finish Monday’s comic and think about it some more.
The comment threads aren’t any fun to me when I have to see people bitching at each other all day.
It’s apparently a racial slur. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=jig
Thanks for the link,Mikael. :3
I mean it,this helps a lot.
Why didnt you explain that to begin with when Dave asked then? Even i had to google it.
Dave asked you to explain WHY it was ‘gross’, and you didn’t. Instead you ignored it and lashed out. All you had to do was say ‘it’s a racial slur’, and that would have been the end of it.
Mikael,Why can’t Dave check on Google like you?
No seriously. Why not check on Google and see for yourself?
I DID google it, the definition I got was “a lively energetic dance”, which led me to interpret the phrase as equivalent to a sarcastic “Merry ray of sunshine”
Also I wasn’t completely sure and didn’t want to give up false information. Like I read it before but I have a bad memory.
Really? Now that’s interesting. Ya didn’t search “why is jig bad to call someone”?
No I just googled “jig”
And ya didn’t think it was weird that this person said “She’s an effing Jig.”? Like how odd it sounds?
Yeah, that’s why I looked it up, and I didn’t see any race related definitions when I did, it just read to me as a non-racist piece of sarcasm.
Wow.
Lady O, do you really not understand how offensive, disrespectful and off putting you come across or do you just not care?
MommyWhy’s comment was incredibly ambigous to people unfamiliar with the use of the term “jig” as any type of racist slur. Your response was unquestionably hostile and when asked to explain why all you did was lash out at Dave.
Instead you could have said:
“I’m sorry that you feel I was being harsh but ‘jig’ is a very offensive racist term in this context and I think its absolutely disgusting that MommyWhy used it like that.”
Then ALL OF US could have become informed and avoided further drama.
If YOU are going to make an accusation against someone its not up to the rest of us to prove your case for you, you have to do that. You have to explain why your actions were justified, especially when its a situation like this where the rest of the commenting community lacks context of the words usage.
You can continue playing the victim card but we aren’t buying it. The simple fact is you regularly attack and antagonize people and when you are called on it, you fall back in to the “every body hates me, everyone blames me” attitude. Its very Amanda-esque.
If you want people to treat you differently you are going to need to give them a reason to. Or if you don’t think thats possible, if you are so convinced we are out to get you, then why bother commenting? Why bother being part of a group you believe hates you so much? I genuinely do not understand that attitude.
Thanks for the wall of text. And for being full of it.
Just thanks sooooo much. -___-
<doesn't believe this.
<doesn't friggin act like a victim.
<doesn't always attack people.
But thanks for playing. ???
Lady O,
You basically just proved my point.
I mean you literally:
Attacked me
Wouldn’t admit you did anything wrong
Portrayed yourself as the victim
Yes because being sarcastic and annoyed with a wall of text is attacking. So much attacking.
Yes, being sarcastic and saying I’m full of it is absolutely attacking. And you are still doing it.
I’m genuinely trying to help you understand what the rest of us are experiencing interacting with you and trying to help you learn from that, but its clear you aren’t interested in anything but being the victim. Don’t be surprised that people continue to respond as they have been, you’re giving them no reason not to.
Dude. I forgot to mention, but I don’t think everyone hates me. Or is attacking me. But for crying out loud. Sarcasm isn’t attacking you.
I ain’t interested in being a victim when I ain’t acting like a victim. But for cripes sake. You’ve kind of crossed the line in asking me if I’m autistic a while back. I do not want anything to do with you. You’ve literally made me uncomfortable. I want you to leave me be.
I never asked if you were autistic, that was someone else.
The discussion’s over, I don’t want more bickering. Full stop, please.
Happy to stop, just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t blamed for something I did not do.
http://www.google.com/search?sclient=tablet-gws&num=20&site=&source=hp&q=why+is+jig+racist&oq=Why+is+jig+&gs_l=tablet-gws.1.0.0i22i30k1l2j0i22i10i30k1.82203.86682.0.87361.13.11.1.1.1.0.139.970.8j2.10.0….0…1c.1j4.64.tablet-gws..1.11.890…0.v6qNfDerSWY ? Is that what you typed?
Well, would you tell me, Miss “I Know Everything”, just what the heck color it is?
http://www.gocomics.com/annie/2016/08/28
Thank you miss I missed the recent movie featuring Annie and being in general a pratt.
But I’m guessing the movie Annie doesn’t count to you. Right? ?
Annie actually was a redhead in a movie since the 1980s which is probably for longer than you’ve been alive. Not everybody watches remakes and people old enough to have seen the first movie are going to be rather annoyed that you’re choosing to take offense because one recent remake trumps more than 50 years (author of the comic died in 1968) of her being a redhead in comic, book, and movie – in your world.
As a further aside, the REDHEADED Raggedy Ann doll was based off the same REAL person the poem that inspired the story was based off of (Little Orphant Annie by James Riley Whitcomb). This person, to be exact, who died in 1924 (90ish years ago): http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=11636232 and while hair color can’t be told from that pic, she’s obviously not black.
This being the case, claiming everybody who remembers Annie as a redhead is a racist says much more about your ignorance of her story than about them.
Congrats. You’re very racist. And gross. Just thank you for your grossness. Like the movie version, the new one, couldn’t prove any girl can friggin be Annie.
You’re very racist for saying this. Never speak to me again.
I already asked you just a few moments ago to stop calling people names. I’m getting real tired of seeing this shit in my comments all the time.
It’s not all the time. But thanks,Dave for the exaggeration. I don’t know what I would do. I mean it isn’t like I haven’t spoken about how much I like a scene or anything else. But nope. I’m just stupid ole trolling LadyObvious who shouldn’t ever speak. Sorry for ruining everything. Won’t happen again.
See, this defensive knee-jerk victim complex crap is what gets annoying.
Uh huh. Yes that’s all this is. Excuse me. I mean it isn’t like you’re overexaggerating my behavior even though this isn’t all I do. And I’ve very well enjoyed your comic for a long time.
But nope. Just knee-jerk victim here. Yep. Sorry.
Kick her ass back under the bridge.
Niiiiiiice.
ROFL. I hoped you’d do this. As it stands, I happen to know my races very well chica. I am Ojibwe, Odawa, Potawatami to start with the highest blood percentage. Also Irish/Welsh/Scots/English and German/Polish/Lithuanian/Russian/Hungarian.
I happen to have grown up with 3 mulatto cousins as well, am learning Spanish and am married to a half Filipino.
In short, you ignorantly calling me racist can be construed as racist. Wanna try again sweetie? 😀
So basically you have nonwhite friends and a small percentage of nonwhite blood.
Weird how you can be racist despite this. And honestly going “I ain’t racist. I have nonwhite blood and nonwhite friends and fiance. So that makes me not racist when I say things that are.”
Like racists never learn another language. Or anything else. -____-
Try more non-white than white, direct descendency from two chiefs in a multi-ethnic family and a great deal of interest in other cultures. In short, hall marks for being less racist than somebody who accuses everyone who disagrees with her of being racist with no regard as to who they really are.
I am, however, very anti-ignorance, no matter the ethnicity and you seem to have a fair clip of that.
…speaking of which, what’s your “proof” you actually aren’t racist. Out of curiosity. You bandy the term about but is that because you think it’s an issue or because you’re hiding your own racism and/or prejudice behind it?
I never asked for proof from you. You just shoved it in my face and went “I ain’t racist for x,y and z.” But the fact is,I still find myself playing into these bullshit things. It’s wrong. I try not to believe in society’s crap. I ain’t going to use my friends as a human shield like you are. Cuz like I said. That’s not proving you’re not racist.
No, you just accused me and expected me to ignore the accusation because you thought I was 100% white and didn’t have a leg to argue on.
This is as good as it’s going to get for proof online with people who don’t know me in real life. People who want to believe I’m racist will ignore it and come off looking like the idiots they are. Everybody else will see the point I’m making about your baseless accusations.
So now I’ve put up to shut you up and I’m giving you a chance to offer your own proofs. You don’t have to, but if you can’t, you should probably stop baseless accusing everyone else on the grounds that they disagree with you.
Racism exists, it’s a real evil. Your false accusations weaken other people’s real accusations when they report genuine racism.
It’s weird how I never accused you of being white. Just racist. And you’re acting like most racists when accused.
Do explain how someone “proves” they aren’t racist? Seriously, if coming from a multicultural background isn’t enough, explain exactly what you think is acceptable? Not calling you out on your b.s. when you accuse somebody who’s being historically accurate of being racist? People who falsely cry racism make a problem for those who actually experience racism and that particularly irks me, given my background. Your overuse and abuse of the term literally makes me sick, it’s why so many people don’t take it seriously.
You might also bone up on your terminology. Institutionalized prejudice by whites against other races is considered racism because no other race has their numbers or political power. Because of that, no other race at this point in time, is racist.
Any race can be prejudiced against another however. So yes, when you use the term racist, I’m going to assume you’re thinking white.
Please note the above is only in reference to the US. In other countries, the power dynamics may differ.
How? Dude. Just stop. Your arm is going to be sore from that reach. -__- Like other races can’t be racist. Like how Japan is towards black people. Seriously.
I ain’t assuming or saying you’re white. You’re shoving words in my mouth about this.
I have a problem with ignorance, you’ve got a lot of it. As I pointed out in my caveat, IN THIS COUNTRY, only whites can be considered racist because racism is institutionalized prejudice against other races. This is not new info, it comes up in most in depth conversations regarding racism in the US. Yes, in Japan, if the dominant culture institutionalized their prejudicial treatment of minority ethnicities, it might be considered racism but I’m not sure because they’re more likely to have institutionalized ethnic differences which are semantically different. However, we don’t live in Japan.
In the US, the dominant ethnicity is white. Ergo, here, only whites are racist. Every one else is prejudiced. Prejudiced is similar, but on a one on one level without the collective power to pass rules institutionalizing their petty power plays.
Educate thyself before you bandy terminology you don’t understand.
Yes. That totally means I’m calling you white.
So, if you weren’t, what were you calling me? Do tell. Given I was supporting the historical accuracy of Annie being white, what race did you assume I was when you called me racist?
I wasn’t. I don’t assume race. -__-
Not stating race so you can’t officially be called out on it yourself and not assuming race are two separate things. If you’re calling racist, you are assuming race even if you won’t outright state so. As someone else pointed out, you brought it up.
…after all, someone can’t be racist against their own race. That’s the equivalent of a little kid snitching a cookie after being told not to touch the cookie jar. “But Mom! I didn’t actually touch the jar…” Yeah, doesn’t fly.
That makes absolutely no sense. I literally didn’t assume you’re white. And saying I’m not saying my own because there’s literally no need to. It LITERALLY wouldn’t help my case.
Chica, you aren’t that stupid. I’ve made my point. Choose your insults more carefully in the future, you’re too obvious to get away with lying after. Racist is a particularly poor insult in your case, your privilege hangs out too…obviously…to anybody who’s had to deal with the real thing.
I just love how you and Alpo are basically “ANNIE’S ONLY A REDHEAD. SHE’S A WHITE REDHEAD FOREVER AND EVER AND EVER!!! BLACK GIRL PLAYING HER DOESN’T COUNT EVER!!!!! SHE IS WHITE REDHEAD!!!!”
Like black people haven’t had naturally red hair. -___-
None but you is making this about race. “Readhead” is not a race, and black redheads do exist for that matter.
They showed white redheads. Not black.
Also when it comes down to it. Lots of racists act like this is a big deal.
Like when Quvenzhane got her job as Annie. It was really nasty. Like “SHE ISN’T A REDHEAD!!!” but for crying out loud. That isn’t the defining factor for Anne. Her being an adorable little orphan kid with spunk does.
It’s just as bad as the bs discourse with MJ. They’re all “SHE’S SUPPOSED TO BE A REDHEAD.” But they easily forget that Kirsten Dunst had to dye her hair red for the role. Zendaya can too.
The movie doesn’t replace established canon, it exists alongside it. By the same logic, is Hermione never allowed to be portrayed by a white girl again?
Gee. Thanks for bigger b.s. it isn’t even established IN THE BOOKS that Hermione was white. Even the author doesn’t hold onto that anymore. But thanks. Just thanks. -_- Sounds super racist too.
There’s a difference between “being racist” and ” talking about race”.
“Hermione can’t be white ever again”. Only was for the movies. By being played by a white actress. Even though the material she was based off of wasn’t established to be white….yes. There’s nothing wrong with this thinking.
http://www.coverwhiz.com/content/Harry-Potter-And-The-Deathly-Hallows_novel.jpg
That said I don’t even mind Hermione in the new play, it’s Ron’s actor who’s just wrong though – the Weasleys have one obvious defining trait for heaven’s sake. cast a ginger.
Who cares? He can dye his hair like most actors do. :/ Not a big problem.
Easy fix. :3
Also I know who is playing Hermione in that. What I’m saying is in the books is that she isn’t established to be white. So saying she is,is kind of annoying.
If Andi brought her hair coloring stuff with her, that could be fixed.
I dunno. Antoine doesn’t seem like the type to dye his hair.
And the RECENT Annie doesn’t have red hair. At all. :/
Thank you for clarifying recent Annie. The young ones I’m around like the new movie and don’t see why it’s even a discusion. I grew up with the old movie (I wore out my VHS movie and still think of Tim Curry first as Rooster) and my grandmother grew up with the old comic strips in the paper. She doesn’t like the movie as much, but the orphans’ attitudes and voice were the same in all of them. (Multi-generational bonding moment – take ’em as you can folks!). Oddly, it was the fact that Daddy Warbucks/Stacks wasn’t bald that threw the most comments.
Yeah. Also it’s just a nickname that Todd made up to bug his brother. Who cares if he isn’t a redhead? It’s just siblings being siblings.
Wait, wait – TIM CURRY WAS ROOSTER?!!!
How many times have I watched that movie, and never known that, and how did I never know that? Thanks for the info, I shall go be stunned now.
Heh. She’s right about Richard. He’s very pretty and apparently generous. Must be Christmas helping that out. :3
I’m def liking Richard, he gets more points for not being freaked out by “weird niece in-law”.
He is pretty mellow.
Oh my, the last panel made me snort with laughter!
In the last panel, Richard reminds me a lot of Dorian from Dragon Age Inquisition.
is his last name Grey?
It should be he is vain enough and being a mage i could imagine Dorian from DA having a painting to keep him young. I love Dorian from DA and yes richard reminds me of him and Antoine of The Iron Bull.
I know that Grandma and Grandpa have been let in on Selkie’s “secret”. Do Antoine and Marta know as well? I’m assuming that Andi and Amanda haven’t been let in on it…
Wasn’t Amanda the one who tried to point out Selkie’s “condition” to Jessie but got stopped by Principal Baggins’ secretary?
Having lived with Selkie for 3 years, it would be pretty much unavoidable for her NOT to know. Not all of it, obviously, but ‘my roommate has gills’ would be a bit difficult to not notice.
Amanda knows. I think Antoine and Marta know. I don’t think Andi does though.
They know, they tried out the kissing to confirm her saliva was an irritant to humans and not just a Todd-specific allergy. Humans don’t have allergic reactions to other humans’ saliva.
I haven’t seen any evidence that Amanda knows that she’s not human. It’s pretty obvious that she’s not “normal” but being a completely different race isn’t as apparent.
I had forgotten about the kissing, thanks for reminding me. Then again, that was BEFORE Todd found out what a Sarnothi was so I guess that re-opens the question again.
Dave, unless it’s a plot point, who specifically knows Selkie is a different species from humans and that that is to be kept a secret? I’m just wondering if Antoine and Marta (and their SOs) are thinking “Jeez, Todd, weird kid you picked out.”
It’s not obvious who Todd is allowed to TELL given they gave him a clearance just to know about it. Usually you’re not even allowed to tell your spouse (mine had a Q clearance with the US Govt. for many years)
With Amanda’s bug-eyes in panel 3, I was actually bracing myself for a ‘BOYS can’t have a BOYfriend!’ moment. Glad it was unnecessary. At first I was going to applaud Lillian for that, but once I actually thought about it, it’s probably less due to her and more due the the simple fact that they lived in an orphanage. They probably get tons of gay couples coming in to start their families, so they would have just been normal to them. I bet half of them never even asked questions about it, just ‘oh cool, this time it’s two dads! I want two dads!’
(Repeating what I said in #819) I don’t recall seeing *any* in-comic LGBT-phobia, offhand; but if Dave does decide to introduce that plot element, I rather doubt that it’ll come from the orphanage kids (unless they picked it up in school). They didn’t bat an eye at Ben and Tom Henderson (“Those guys rock!”), and Amanda in particular was proud of having had the five-parent family considering her.
Yeah, it didn’t make much sense when I actually thought about it, but in the second between seeing the shock and scrolling down to the awe, I had a little gut-clench.
I was looking at her blush in panel 4 and thought: “Someone’s got a crush.”
It’s a lot clearer now that the colours are in. The bugged-out look seemed a lot more severe in the lineart stage, and made me interpret it as more of a ‘WTF’ rather than the ‘OMG’ it is.
Yeah, I still think she does. “Blushing means crushing!” seems to be a running gag in this universe anyway.
That and haven’t a few of the kids been adopted by LBGT couples already (and 1 group of 5)?
I don’t think the quintet actually ended up adopting. I seem to recall that they had to be removed from the orphanage for creating a disturbance of some sort (which I would love to know more about), and when we did that little between-chapters page with them I only remember seeing adults.
There may have been another gay couple we saw, but the only ones I can think of off the top of my head are Antoine & Richard, and Jessie & her ex.
I have a Richard of my own with the same hair texture you described. He absolutely hates it, but it’s AMAZING.
Hahaha! Amanda is not wrong at all here. Does Richard have an accent? In my head he has Antonio Banderas’ voice. 😀
You’re pretty close to my own head-voice for him, actually! My internal Richard voice is a little bit of Razum-Dar (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbswX18YXRU) and Oberyn Martell (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDvinF3eGQw) (Probable spoilers for Elder Scrolls Online and Game of Thrones, respectively)
Oooo… He looks a bit like Oberyn, too. I bet he’d get many people swooning over him—especially teens. Amanda’s response is vaguely familiar. Seems like that age is when crushes really start to come out.
An Antonio Banderas’ voice would be an awesome thing to have. 😀
All of the facial expressions in the last panel are gold.
careful buddy, you don´t know amanda yet – her potty mouth will leave you flat broke 😉
Agreed.
Well he does have a marker he can pull any time he sees fit.
I like Richard already XD
Yay! 😀
I think this speaks well of Amanda and backs up my opinion of her as a basically decent kid, despite her quick temper and learned tendencies towards bullying. When introduced to a same-gender couple, her unfiltered response (because she’s not really got much of a filter between her brain and her mouth at this point in her life) is not homophobic nor mean. Rather, it’s “OMG I think that man is so cute!” It’s telling that her immediate reaction went to a pretty age-appropriate reaction to an attractive person rather than to something mean or bigoted. 🙂
A person can be homophobic but not a racist. A person can be racist but pro-LGBT. Or they can be xenophobic while being pro-LGBT and not a racist. It just depends on which group the person thinks is different enough to justify bullying and/or triggers their buttons d/t past issues.
Humans are a lot like chickens when it comes to pecking orders. Alright, Amanda doesn’t peck at the usual target groups (going to note here as an orphanage kid she’s already pretty low on the overall pecking order herself.) However, she still has the same problem if she’s picking at those she feels are different enough to warrant it. Because at this point we aren’t considering it a a specific group, it falls under generic target name of bullying. But racism and homophobia are institutionalized bullying given a free pass by majority population and bullying of somebody who is different for any reasons is still bullying even if it has a specialized name.
Amanda is a bully. You are implying that her form of bullying is redeemable because at least it isn’t the institutionalized form of bullying other groups go through. But where do you think the institutionalized forms start? And once the Sarnothi are outed to the general public, you can bet Sarnothiphobia is going to become “a thing” which is going to make her behavior on par with both racism and homophobia if it’s not nipped in the bud. Ergo, yes, it’s as bad as both racism and homophobia.
This means not being homophobic hasn’t made her less mean or bigoted TO HER TARGETED GROUP OF PREFERENCE. So no, not being homophobic does not speak well of her. She’s still displaying meanness and bigotry to a member of her target group. It just means she doesn’t see same sex couples as below her in the pecking order, unlike Selkie and by extrapolation, other Sarnothi kids (who are likely to have most of the same issues that make her think Selkie is gross).
Eh, people aren’t born homophobes. Kids wouldn’t see anything weird with homosexuality unless someone teaches them that they should.
True, dat. I grew up in a small town where homophobia was rampant. One of my friends came out when she was away in college and townsfolk (that term sadly applies) acted as if it was “scandalous.” Hell, I suspected she was gay when I knew her in middle school, but you didn’t DO that when I was growing up.
Things appear to be much better now. My son’s skating coach got married to her wife while we were taking lessons from her and nobody even appeared to think it was an issue.
I don’t think he understands how broke he’s going to be.
This is so precious!!
With the culture I was brought up in, the whole thing about Little Orphan Annie went over my head, but I’m conditioned to be reminded by Richard’s moustache of Zhuge Liang. XD
hey dave, when are you gonna ban lady obvious from commenting? she’s making the dialogue around here feel v unsafe and a lot of time’s she’s just blatantly attacking people.
Wow, Dave. I went in to the comments after seeing you had over 124 and then I saw why. Sorry dude:( I dunno whether I am envious that you have so many, or feel sorry for why. Me, I’m gonna sit back and be simple and ignorant about it. I’m still going through my head the differences in Amanda’s appearance now that she has rainbow hair. Have we even SEEN her snide face yet? Nope. Yay! I still don’t like her as a character but I love how you write her and am enjoying her growth:)
Thank you, Jade! It’s definitely interesting to me to work with Amanda in this “recolored” context.
And as to the comment storm… yeah. I’m not a fan of these drama sessions. Changes are going to be made, because I’m sick of seeing these happen again and again.
Thank you, Dave, sorry you have this happening to your creation.
Am I the only one who hears Antonio Banderas when I read Richards bubbles?
