The Voice of Command is a powerful tool, not to be used lightly. Mina.

The Sandy Hook Massacre has been on my mind and in my conversations this entire past weekend. If I have any Selkie readers in the area or (god I hope not) affected by the incident, my heart goes out to you. I hope… I don’t know what I hope, honestly. Just.. be okay, please…
I don't know enough details about Dune to make a Bene Gesserit punchline, but the temptation was there. (Never read the books, and I only know the phrase Bene Gesserit from a PVP Online strip.)

Many shades of awesome! And hurray for at least a hint of chemistry, plus excellent use of the MOM voice.
BLUSHING MEANS CRUSHING! BLUSHING MEANS CRUSHING!
Todd and Mina, Sitting in a tree…
I can’t recall, is Mina married, or a single mom? Either way, I do think that she and Todd make a cute couple.
Mina is divorced and her ex husband has custody of the kid
So cute…
hm….How entertaining! Now if i could just get my Mom voice up to that level…
Funny thing is, that’s a more book-accurate depiction of the Bene Gesserit “voice” than in any of the movie/TV adaptions. It’s supposed to be using super finely tuned inflection/body language to mash on the target’s instinctive authority obedience button. Basically like cop voice only way, waaaay more advanced, but the movies/TV shows always just throw an audio filter over normal inflection and call it a day.
Kind of understandable, as it’d be hard to do it right without still having to explain it at some point, but it does have the unfortunate side effect of making “the voice” just come off as a simple handwave-y X-Men power.
…Yeah, I’m a geek.
Interesting points: There are people who lack that button, the instinct is grown out of unless an individual is raised in an authoritarian manner. There are also people who lack it for other reasons, like people with ODD, which can result in abuse (or, in channeled properly, vastly increased IQ).
And yeah, I agree, this is probably the most awesome make of it I’ve seen in a long while.
HEY! if you look at the previous page you will see I was sensing it way before this one! I totaly called it!
Yeah yeah, you called it ONE page back. I called it three pages back in selkie262, and I’m sure I wasn’t the first.
I think it was called way back when Miss Afkhami – I probably butchered that, sorry – first met Todd.
Jessica’s expressions, panels 4 and 5… : D Got my week off to a good start!
ziska-san definitely called it. I thought, Naaaahhh, somebody just wants to ship a pair of characters, not happening. Wrong again. But on the positive side being clueless means I get so many happy surprises!
Like you, I was also wrong.
I still think Todd’s clueless though. Too much paternal love for Selkie atm plus prior issues with Andi. We’ll see if that one’s correct.
We always call it “the Mom voice”. I was the only one on any side of the family to develop it. As my siblings are all 8+ years younger than me, this is both a good and bad thing… But it is great for making everyone stop in mid-argument, cat fight, etc, and Get Things Done.
Heh, the mom voice/teacher voice. I developed it while teaching. It is usually also joined by the Eye, which can stop the unruly in their tracks, and occasionally is automatically used even on children not your own.
I’ve used not just Mom Voice but “The Counting Mom Voice” (ONE! TWO! [you don’t want to get to three…])… on telemarketers who are trying to do their spiel over me.
They shut up.
My mom never said “one” it was always ‘2’
I was wondering when people would start shipping Todd and Mina. Looks like it’s started in-universe as well. Selkie’s reaction if they do start dating should be priceless.
My mom calls that the “Teacher Voice.”
After growing up in a family of teachers – that is definitely “The Teacher Voice”. It is a practice handed down from one generation to the next, a verbal tradition and not to be used lightly.
Very strange, I still don’t get the vibe of Mina and Todd in any sort of romantic sense. Friends, yes, but lovers? No. At least not yet. They need more interaction that isn’t based on who did what horrible to Selkie now.
Ah, but you’re forgetting how psychotic some fandoms can get with their shipping. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s Todd/Mina fanfic being written right now.
No, I’m not forgetting. I’m choosing to delude myself with the illusion that the fandom of Selkie is smarter than usual and actually capable of not focusing on romance in a comic based around children. That, and I still think Todd should’ve been gay. 😛
We are usually programmed from early childhood to respond to “Mom Voice.” But let’s not forget “the Look” that Dad’s use to freeze a child in their tracks. (anyone else ever feel it from a block away?)
The scariest version of the “Mom Voice” I had to deal with, when she spoke softly and had that touch of disapointment in her voice. (She’ll still use that one on me and I’m in my late 30s)
Does this mean Luffy is a mom? O.O
Ahh! She is a Bene Gesserit! She’s using The Witch’s Voice!
I spotted a small spelling error, I think that should be “times”, not “time’s”
I believe you are right, yes.
pactice makes perfect
I’m glad that the world of Selkie doesn’t have to deal with the aftermath of Sandy Point. I’m not even in CT and my 6 yr old son’s elementary school now has an armed member of law enforcement on the grounds as a response. It’s refreshing to look into Selkie’s world after seeing the news lately. Thanks for giving my brain a break.
In the past two+ years of these comics, how much time has passed? Not counting the months we skipped when Tod was getting approved.
Not counting the one day prior to the approval time-skip, about one month has passed in comic time. My goal is to skip continuity-time ahead a bit in upcoming stories, but there’s stuff I want to lay groundwork for too. The arc after this one for example will start featuring autumn weather.
Color bubbles
Err- I mean COLOR BUBBLES HELL YES, FUCK YEA THIS SHOULD BE ON YOUTUBE! NUMBUH ONE YEAH~!
There’s a mom voice, and a mom stare. I have them both down. 🙂
