Even if Grandpa Theo is wrong, Todds starting to sound in like he’s in denial, it’s less about wheather the girls are intending to be a danger and more about what conclusions government officials will come to from hearing about their unauthorized power uses.
Why do I think Theo has had some experience with why you never trust the government?
Also Andi is being surprisingly realistic about this entire situation. Todd does need to realize that sure….while there hasn’t been any singed flesh yet…. What happens if the girls start to fight again? Or what if there is a stray shot that actually hits someone, even on accident?
That’s starting to sound more likely when we examine past evidence. Immediately after meeting Selkie, he recalls a canceled fishing trip due to the government banning the lake from being accessible. And from there he probably did a deeper delve into the interwebs and started noticing more what isn’t being said, than what is.
Grandpa Theo is also *immeasurably* calm about super-powered grandkids, compared to his wife who we have seen struggle to stay calm on occasion. Whom we’ve also seen suggesting that Theo is thinking too much about the situation. Come to think of it.. what do we really know about their backstory other than “super cool adults who adopted lots of equally cool kids?”
I mean, he’s black and lives in the US. He’d just on that alone, have good reason not to trust the US government specifically. Tuskagee syphilis research, or redlining, anyone? Jim Crow laws, etc? Or just the NSA and all the spying they do on they’re own citizens. Or what ICE gets up to with people from central and south America, and even before that, the US government would gas immigrants coming across the border. Not to kill them, no – they pretended it was to “decontaminate” them, but actually it was to make them sick and discourage them. (I heard that’s where the Nazis got that idea in the first place. )
Not that governments are necessarily more trustworthy elsewhere, either.
I think its fair to say that a couple of colour doesn’t successfully adopt multiple kids without seeing the good and bad that comes from government systems.
Honestly, I’m surprised with Todd’s reaction. He JUST received an ominous warning from the Sarnothi doctor. I would have expected him to fly into a panic when he got an additional warning from his father.
Maybe have them train on a supervised schedule? And at a dedicated location, like a gun range, but not a gun range, per se? Actually, I bet Avery could have one set aside for their exclusive use.
While I do think Theo is overreacting just a little bit, as the government want the kids to be happy and healthy, but if they’re suddenly removed from their loving family I don’t think the kids are going to cooperate with anyone.
But to be fair to Theo he’s worked with the system before I mean he has three adopted kids so he probably had to do a lot of unnecessary legal bullshit to make sure his kids stayed with him and his wife.
Hey I’m just making a comment no reason to start something. Also I get what you mean though I’m just saying that the government wants the kids to be happy and healthy so they can develop their powers, probably more so with Amanda as she’s a human Echo.
So the kids finding themselves taken away from a loving family will put a kibosh on the government’s plans.
I think Todd is being kind of naïve or the world they live in is just a very very good world.
Selkie’s people are currently engage in war. His entire family witnessed that first hand and part of that war involves using the natural ability of Selkie’s people.
Even at the wedding as soon as someone recognized what Selkie was doing they grabbed her immediately and that was for a “good” reason. So what’s stopping someone from seeing the girls screwing around with green fire outside and just kidnapping them, wanting them for a bad reason?
It’s like Todd is completely forgetting that Selkie’s Mother intentionally equipped her daughter with a device designed to dampen her ability.
I just thought about it and I have come to the conclusion that the universe in which these character exist probably is a “very very good world”. Even after the Government found out about these powers they released Selkie in to someone else’s care.
If I am being honest, in the current real world climate I do not have much faith in that happening. I personally feel like those girls would be kept somewhere in a government facility being closely monitored and tested on. The very fact Selkie is a different species is already enough to warrant that without the power.
We already know that they at least have one adult echo that they could do tests on (possibly voluntary) in some unknown location. I would think that Amanda would be in more danger than Selkie, as there is no record of a human being able to do this before. With Selkie, rather than kidnapping a kid, which a fair amount of peiple know about, “hiring” an adult would make more sense. Someone like Scar, who it seems like even the Sarnothi might not miss, would make more sense. I also think that Selkie was a test subject for the integration of orphan Sarnothi kids into the system.
On the other hand, I alway did wonder why they didn’t offer to pay to move the family into a very rural area with few people once the kids started awakening their powers. Hard for things to be overseen during the training process if you are in the middle of nowhere. Even a 20 acre forested property with a house seems like a better idea than an apartment.

Trusting the government is like trusting a fart after taco tuesday, and dollar beer night.

Thats the moment when the girls disappear.
Or simply on a powerful power brokers whim.

Possibly ex military?

I don’t think anybody does unless they have ungodly amounts of money for the process.
ive said that several times now

ma’am that is an optimistic outlook that is not warranted.
remember the government is not there to care about you.
