Lisa is reading a pirate novel. She likes pirates.

Thanks Tinkerbinker!
It's strange how things can evolve in your mind when writing a story. My original drafts had Selkie being more sympathetic to Keisha, but the more I think about their history and Selkie's personality, the more I realized Selkie would not be in a sympathetic mood right now.

Wow, Lisa sure is passionate about working with kids, isn’t she? Out of all the school staff who handled this incident in less than stellar fashion, I think she must be the most egregiously apathetic one of the lot.
She reminds me of that one elementary school secretary me and my sisters had at our school years back who blatantly ignored my mothers instructions on my sisters EpiPen and than proceeded to lose it due to incompetence, something that came to light when my sister accidentally consumed nuts in baked goods she was given.
Did your sister survive?! O.O
I wonder this too. 😐
Yes, it was more a shock if anything, but while my sister can die from her nut allergy, certain nuts effect her more than others…like for instance Walnuts…and the effect is diminished considerably by baking them, as this was in bread and thus baked she didn’t get a life threatening reaction.
Still pissed my mother off something fierce because that was left in the office with that women for easy accessibility in case of an emergency.
I had a friend who had a bad case of asthma, and the school we went to wanted to keep his inhaler in the front office. The office in question was at the far side of the school. The school itself was raised a good 7-10 above the ground, due to it’s lower floor being the heating/water/power rooms. Needless to say, we had to manually fix his attack when it happened, because there was no way he was gonna make it up those stairs.
wow Laughing Moon that is insane! But not knowing much about asthma, how do you manually fix an attack?
During an Asthma attack a person essentially has difficulty getting the right amount of air as the pathways in their lungs are effectively tightened or clogged up with mucus, I forget which. The person when they go into this state likely will begin to hyperventilate and go into Shock, so I suppose manually fixing this would involve calming the person to a state where they can slowly take deep breaths to combat the issue, that or CPR…I doubt it always works in every situation, but I imagine for minor to moderate asthmatic cases, it can help.
Constricted airways. Not clogged. You have to sit really still and think of nice calm stuff and breathe as slowly as possible, and 4 out of 5 times I still will get that panic attack. Not being able to breathe is scary stuff.
Have you seen Signs? This would be like what the dad did for Morgan during his asthma attack when they didn’t have an inhaler.
Is there any rhyme or reason to which words Selkie ends with an ‘s’? Or is it mostly random?
I think it has to do with how her mouth / jaw / teeth are structured.
I think Dani probably knows why she does it… but that doesn’t really explain when she does it, verses not doing it.
I think it a way of showing a lisp, without using the th sound at the end
Man you are really good at characterizing kids! I would ask if you are secretly eight years old but that would make it sound like I am trying to be rude though I mean quite the opposite. Mad props.
Im sure he just has experience. You know, being a kid once and all that. XD
I completely agree. I can only hope that I can make the characters in my novel personify the traits that they possess like he can. It’s what really makes a story, and is a lot harder to do than it seems.
On an unrelated note, due to your avatar, my mind gave you the professor’s voice the entire time that I read your comment. O.o
Well, you do hear the occasional story of people adopting a bunch of kids, but it’s one at a time over years. Certainly not three at once.
But I have to wonder, is Selkie merely sticking to her stance out of common sense? Or just being extra-mean because she’s had a bad day? Eh, maybe a little of each.
ive only heard of crazy celebs adopting kids and then the kids are never heard from again…americans messed up a bit.
I love that look on Selkie’s face. ‘Call me fish face all you want. You’re just pissed because I’m right.’ XD
It’s good to see her moving from being sad/upset to righteously angry. I like her tongue sticking out in panel 4–she’s so over all this nonsense.
Eh, you’ll hopefully change your mind when the thing between Heather and Amanda comes up. Because seriously, what Amanda did was mean too, since she tattled to be spiteful.
I want her book to be How To Raise Your Kid To Be A Pirate. I got that book for my brother for his birthday, and it’s got a lot of ridiculous stuff that I could see this school doing. Like… mounting cannons on moving vehicles. Selkie might actually like salt cod, though. Hmm.
Link not working. Trying again. The Book.
It has been many a time when I had to sit in the principles office, because another kid decided to do something, then lied about it. All the while, the staff thought I was ADD, in reality, I’m Autistic (aspergers). Because of this, it was always somehow my fault that all these things were happening
While none of the oher kids got me in trouble I know what it’s like to be misdiagnosed as ADD when I myself actually had asbergers. Even one of the best hospitals in the nation misdiagnosed me, and they kept wanting to give me medicine that made me sleepy and lose my appetite.
Boy my folks were STEAMED.
My brother’s 1st grade teacher “diagnosed” him as ADD and dyslexic. He was actually bored and goofing off by reading backwards. Mom had to have a long talk with the principal, which ended with several “diagnoses” being reversed for other kids and the teacher getting fired. Yay Mom!
“but the more I think about their history and Selkie’s personality, the more I realized Selkie would not be in a sympathetic mood right now.”
Yeah, plus she’s a kid. If you think you’re right and someone you are/just were mad at is wrong about something, then they are stupid by definition. That’s how kids their age think.
Not necessarily. I will admit that that does play into it, but if the opposing side is just being stubborn, then what are you supposed to do? You know that you’re right. You know that they’re wrong. End of story.
There are always the kids on the side of “I’m always right” but it’s exactly those sort of people who are very often… well… wrong. The ego will do surprising things to try to protect itself, and if the two parties already have a history together, that will definitely play into it. I have also noticed in my lifetime that the brain will literally BLOCK OUT the times when it has been wrong. My best friend has a tendency to do this, which can be a real pain in the but sometimes. However, I’ve always preferred the “3rd Party Method”, which is basically what it sounds like – a third party, impartial to either side, comes into the fight and tries to straighten out the facts and see who’s wrong.
When I was in elementary school there was a girl I didn’t get a long with. She would snark at me, cut in front of me in line, get all annoyed over things I did that did not affect her in any way (like checking to see if a door was locked before waiting in the hallway). She never did anything to brutal, but interacting with her was always unpleasant, and I avoided her when I could.
On picture day, we were in line right next to each other because our last names started with the same letter. Some other kids were saying some kind of mean stuff to her about her appearance. Without even thinking about it, I defended her and told her she looked fine, and the other kids shut up. I didn’t realize until quite some time later that I had defended someone who normally acted like a bit of a jerk to me and grated on every last nerve I had.
We hadn’t interacted that day (which meant she hadn’t been mean to me that day), so I wasn’t really thinking about her as “that girl who’s always mean to me.” I just registered that a classmate was in trouble, and the “conflict mediation” part of my brain switched on. When I finally realized what I’d done, I was proud of myself. I had done something nice for someone who wasn’t always nice to me just because it was the right thing to do: just like Spiderman.
Heheh, I like how Selkie’s like ‘wow, fishface, that’s new’
Also, secretary lady, what are you doing, that is not how you normally deal with fighting children…
Good for Selkie.
Though a degree of competency -and- sympathy from the staff would be nice, rather than picking one or the other. But perhaps I’m being too hard on them…
I wonder how everyone will react when Heather and Georgie show up.
Hope Keisha realizes what a meany-face she’s being. Although, the “popular” kids almost always never do.
And I had such high hopes for Keisha too.
(Hey Jessie, come back with Heather already?)
I’m writing a story about Selkie and Dave Warren for the local newspaper in Springfield, IL and would like to talk with a few fans about how they discovered the strip and what they like about it. If you’re interested in adding a few comments to the story, please contact me today (Tuesday morning at the latest). I’ll need to use your first and last names and the city where you live. Thanks. Kathy Rem
Just a quick note from me, this is real. She is a columnist from my local newspaper, and if anyone would be willing to give Kathy a few comments she could use for the article, I’d much appreciate it. 🙂
She’s really nice. I just talked to her. Congratulations Dave!
Thanks so much, Selkie fans, for contacting me. I think I have enough comments now. Thanks again. Kathy Rem
In Lisa’s defense (yes, I know, big shocker D8 ) some people just aren’t all that good with children. And before you go all, “Then why is she working at a school?” on me, she works in the main office and mainly deals with adults. You can’t really be picky about where you work… if it had been up to my father some odd six years ago, he wouldn’t have been working in a print shop ran by an A-hole who next to never paid him. Glad that A-hole’s business didn’t last…
That aside now…
Selkie really is the sensible one. And probably the least childish of the two of them. I just hope things don’t go too hostile over them…
But I once again say, way to go Selkie! 😀 Saying it like it is.
Annnnnnnd Keisha is just continuing to prove Selkie’s point; as well as proving my point earlier about “being a meanie/bully is being a meanie/bully, regardless if you have “standards” or not”; back when Keisha defended “what she did was different” than what was done to Selkie.
Selkie has a point there. Instead of being mad at their friend, they should have supported her. That’s what friends are supposed to do. Someone needed to say it. Keisha is on the defensive right now, but from the look on her face, I think Selkie’s words may have struck home.
I love and hate how they’re arguing about something serious like that and the secretary just is like “shut up I’m reading.”
I do that with my younger siblings actually, she probably has an ear open in case things start getting hectic but for the most part right now Keisha and Selkie are just squabbling and will probably sort it out, or the magnificent three on their way to clear Keisha’s name will show up.
The sad thing presac, is that the secretary can’t get involved at this point. All she can do is keep them quiet and from fighting. If she does anything overt the school could get sued. It’s sad, but that is the way it is these days.
panel five is the truth of every office person I’ve met in school. When in doubt tell them to use inside voices so they can get back to their break. I love that panel.
I’m really starting to get mixed feelings for this girl. On the one hand, I feel sorry for her because of what has happened over recent pages. On the other, she seems to be in a sort of denial, not wanting to see what’s right in front of her, namely the fact that she is being pretty unreasonable, even for a kid.
Of course, Selkie’s not really helping her to see the light, either, what with all of the ‘stupids’…
I just realized… Is Keisha having a runny nose in panel 1 and wiping it on the back of her arm in panel 2? Hee hee:) Snot face;)
Hmmm. Selkie’s forgotten that Todd’s parents DID adopt three kids, but not all at once.
Not sure if random button is giving me good comics…
or all the comics are good.
