I haven’t done a Sketch Day Saturday in awhile, but since it’s Halloween weekend, this is a good time I think. Come back on Saturday to see a sketch of Selkie dressed up as a video game character! Which one? You’ll find out!
I think Jessie must watch Regular Show.
Good to know her teacher is sympathetic to what she believes to be a ‘condition’.
I was worried she’d treat poor Selkie like some kind of ‘freak’. I know teachers are more professional than that, but you never know.
She probably knows what it’s like, being singled out for a glaringly obvious difference in a country where you’re not just a minority, but highly ignorant people believe/make accusations that you’re hiding twelve WMD’s under your Burqa or that you want to kill all the infidels.
For those that don’t know what a Burqa is, it’s the full-body cloak worn by traditional Muslim women. If I recall correctly, they wear it because old-time Muslim traditions stated that women were considered so pure that they could illicit lust in any man that saw her, so they had to cover their bodies to avoid this. If I’m wrong, then please correct me! ^_^
I never regarded The Regular Show as a kids’ show. It feels like it is half a step away from Adult Swim material. Not explicit, really, but the humor seems more cynical and geared towards *slightly* more mature audiences. I’m 21, and the episodes I’ve seen seem aimed directly at my generation.
Everytime I watch an episode, I wonder if any kids today even get jokes about cassette tapes.
Plus, “Summertime Lovin'” WAS my jam (yo) when I was a kid. Most kids probably don’t get why they’re making fun of pop songs.
I feel like I should hike up my belt and yell about those darn kids on my lawn, now.
Yeah, I am just baffled when it comes to shows like Regular Show and Adventure Time – baffled about how they became popular with kids, anyway, because I friggin’ LOVE ’em. I don’t know how they don’t get more complaints from parents…i’m almost waiting for it to happen. If it does, I hope they bring ’em out on DVD soon! Heck, I want ’em on DVD either way.
Anyway, they say more than “sucks” on Regular Show! I’ve heard “pissed” before, which I thought was a milestone for a kid’s cartoon (pretty sure I heard “damn” once as well, which takes it even further). Overall it’s very surprising that I don’t see more complaints in the news or something.
And we thought “Gargoyles” was progressive when Xanatos said, “Give a man enough money and he’ll walk into Hell.” or some such quote. It’s in one of the first few episodes! It certainly raised some brows. I love that show to death but I wouldn’t claim it was for young kids: Tweens on up, yes:)
This isn’t a new phenomenon either. Animaniacs and Ren & Stimpy had some pretty out there jokes for what were supposed to be kid’s shows. You can say the same about the looney toons as well.
Animaniacs did a fantastic job IMO of making their jokes layered so that the more adult jokes ether went right over younger kids’ heads and/or had double meanings as kid-friendly jokes.
I don’t think Ren & Stimpy was ever a kids show. More like a parody of kids shows aimed at teens and young adults.
It’s also worth noting that back when they were originally made, Loony Tunes themselves weren’t kids cartoons with the occasional odd adult joke, they were adult cartoons with the adultness dialed down to make them Hayes-code safe.
Yeah… There was a big difference between what content was displayed on what station/network. Ren and Stimpy, which I dislike, was never on “normal” tv. It was always on cable. Note I said was.
Well, the Simpsons is/was considered a kids’ show (yes I know it really isn’t, but that’s how it’s still often viewed) and they say a lot worse than “it really sucks”. (Personally I’d never have figured out what the teacher meant with language if Jessie hadn’t pointed it out herself.)
Oh gosh, isn’t it rated, what? G? I was talking about it with a friend of mine(who is mind you, covered in piercings) and he agreed with me, that he would not let a kid under 12 watch that. Some of the language they use, and the situations and the jokes are just…wow…
Mario! I hope it’s Mario. Definitely should be Mario…
Actually, I see Selkie more as Princess Leia … I think she’d look really cute with the sticky-bun hairstyle.
(But not wearing the Jabba-the-Hut slavegirl outfit … Todd would never let her out of the house!)
As long as she isn´t Lara Croft…
How about the female Shepard from the Mass Effect series? At least Citadel Station would be a place where she isn´t constantly stared at… they´ve seen much weirder people. ^_^
Plus she might be self conscious, cuz I’ pretty sure that shows a lot of gill
:3
I love Regular Show :3 (I’m 18…always felt it was aimed more at older teens/young adults than kids. So it’s likely Jessie would watch it :>) Also I can totally relate to those “I hate gym” faces in panel two. I was never an athletic kid and gym class didn’t really help my self confidence. Glad I don’t have to do that now!
Can’t wait.
😛
I don’t remember my elementary days all that well, but I do know they gave up on the “no swearing” and “no running in the halls” by 6th where I was living at the time.
And why not, really… barring up-tight parents who keep their kids in their basements with large statues of naked dead men, who really cares?
Because you want to model and encourage good behavior, even if it seems futile. The hope is that if you tell them they need to have the highest standards, they’ll decide to have medium ones. If you teach medium, there’s a greater chance they’ll slide to low standards of behavior.
Wow. I’m gonna respond in a totally different manner. It’s a culture thing. In this culture it is wrong to rape and kill. If a family disagrees, they get flack for it. If some families think it’s okay to be rude and disorderly as per this culture, the same thing happens. It’s all about what your surrounding culture approves and disapproves of and whoever stands out from that must accept the concequences. Rules are for a reason. My daughter just turned three and she understands that daddy drinks “adult drink”, and that adults say “naughty words” at times and that she isn’t allowed to because she isn’t old enough. It is seen as rude and bad parenting in our society to let kids do stupid adult things. And I dont’ disagree with that.
Had to laugh at lot at this one – just last week I got a call from my kids’ school principal because our 1st grader yelled “You SUCK” at a teacher in the lunchroom. His table was being noisy and they’d all been told “No recess until you quiet down.” Apparently my child felt he hadn’t been noisy (I’m quite certain he WAS.) and didn’t deserve punishment.
He is now VERY well aware that school will seem like a wonderful place to be compared to home, if mom & dad get calls from the office again. Grounding + having to do big brother’s chores + discussions about appropriate ways to respond to people when you feel they are wrong…heavy stuff when you’re 6.
8D I like the way you raise your son.
Mom would do all that to us, plus a spanking or hand smack with the wooden spoon. We certainly didn’t grow up any the worse for it.
Heh. My parents didn’t go the spoon route but we got spanked if we really stepped out of line.
I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve spanked our boys. We reserve swats to the rear for times when the kids do something that puts them in serious danger (ie – running into the street, playing with the stove) or is intentionally hurting another person (6 year old decided to practice his TaeKwonDo on big brother once…only once). The idea is to shock them into the realization that what they did is REALLY wrong. For most things, grounding and extra chores suffice. Especially when the one kid has to sit and watch mom, dad, and the other brother play Rift. People say video games cause problems…we’ve found grounding from video games to be a VERY good incentive for better behavior out of our boys.
Yeah! Good for you!
Letting kids believe that swearing like a sailor is acceptable in company is setting them up to fail… or at least, to have a major reworking of their vocabulary when they realize that most places don’t want to hire potty-mouths.
XD I was kinda thrown off when I first heard them say “sucks” in Adventure Time… I haven’t seen much of Regular Show, but I think it’s more of a tween and teen kind of cartoon, so I can see how Jessie would like it.
I do think it’s a good thing that Jessie is the student teacher, since she seemed to become pretty friendly with Selkie back in Wool-Mart. :3
Selkie and Georgie look like they’re taking the long walk to the short drop!
I love Jessie’s expression. “he just got all, like… quiet.”
I wonder… does Jessie realize that Selkie is adopted?
I’m not sure; Todd mentioned the orphanage off-handedly back here, but I think Jessie was focusing too intently on her foot-fitting gear at the time to take notice.
I like Jessie. She’s sweet, loves kids, and tries to be understanding.
I love how the teacher and Jessie both are unaware that Selkie’s a different species, not just different-looking. It might actually be better initially, if the various teachers were under the impression that she has some very rare condition. Mind you, the teachers’ room gossip might still be quite interesting.
Naturally! I don’t see any aliens or other species around so I assume that is still an unknown quantity, so… Yeah. Ignorance is playing in their favor big-time:) Governments rely on it all the time!
*Awkwardly shuffles around about being 20 and still enjoying those cartoons, fondly remembers first week in Dorm where everyone watched Avatar: The Last Airbender together*
Hehehe…
Our dorm had a special time where we would all gather and watch the new season 3 episodes of ATLA together each week as it aired. Our dorms were awesome at that time because of that.
I love ATLA! I got into it late though, sadly. When they started showing trailers for the live action movie, I decided to finally get around to watching this show all my friends had been hyping for years and did a summer-long Netflix binge of seasons 1-3. My intent was to watch the original before I saw the live action adaptation.
Lets just say I am VERY glad I did not make the live action version my first exposure to the franchise. XD
Fun fact: When I decided to bring Jessie back I needed a last name for her. Around the same time I also happened to notice the name of Toph’s voice actress. :3
ATLA for the win! ^^ I thought it was stupid when I first heard about it but when I saw the huge finale at the end of the first season I knew I just had to get into this show
I just wanted to mention that I am a new reader, and I love Selkie! I can’t wait for more updates!
I love that blip, gunnerkrigg court and QC are on the list of other comics you read.
I seriously just want to hug Selkie! on pretty much any page she’s in! (And Georgie is amazing <3 I'd adopt him in a split second!)
David Xanatos said ‘hell’ in his first appearance in Gargoyles, and that was a 90s Disney cartoon. Of course, he’s David freaking Xanatos.
I’m currently in class 3D of something like the Dutch equivalent of high school… Coincidence? I think not.
“They suck.”
“Let’s watch the language, please.”
“Ellos chupan.”
Yeah, “sucks” is pretty common now. Of course, that’s because it’s moved into the common lexicon and is no longer DIRECTLY referring to “having to suck on a big ol’ penis you’d rather not.”
Absent that context (which very few kids would be able to reference) it’s a pretty harmless phrase.
