ok, so the whole echo-thingy comes with the occasional prayer to sarnothi gods? occasional because pohls wife certainly didn´t do it – then again, she wasn´t using it on the epic scale scar is doing right now.
makes me wonder if echo´s also play a role in their religion, if maybe they´re considered blessed by the (eel, water moccasin,…) spirits…which would make giens fury about selkie potentially loosing her gift even more understandable.
Sai Fehn isn’t the Echo, though. Pohl is. Pohl makes tech appliances for her to use, like her athame (I’ve pretty much been calling it spirit-knife or witch-knife, since she doesn’t seem to have to touch her projects to carve them, it appears to be a thai-chi-like activity and she mentally forms the clay, and the knife projects the energy to nip off pieces)
And her water-tension intensifiers to cradle the babies and nurse them without having to get into the tank with them.
And Echo can access the force and use it to make other things that average Sarnothi can also use.
BUT.. POHL did not utter a spoken prayer… but he was also not activiting his Gift for such a level as Scar is here, when we have seen him activate. He was reading the supressor. He did seem to go into a meditative/prayer state, though. Scar is having to create a breathing apparatus for a non-Sarnothi, so it must require more effort/a call to the gods.
I see this in Paganism, as well. A witch doesn’t utter prayers aloud for every thing they might need a little help to do, they can use mental power, but for group efforts, or when working with or on the behalf of another, prayers are spoken.
First, I’m not trying to imply that Scar isn’t an Echo. It seems pretty obvious to me.
Second, I’m also not trying to imply that Sai Fenn is with my next observation.
Knowing that Pohl is making tools for Sai Fenn with his echo abilities that can manipulate the “energies,” I wonder how much Scar’s prosthesis is amplifying his abilities (if, at all).
We clearly see it “activate” when Scar is using his Echo abilities. (Those pretty green lines got nice and bright.) I’m just curious as to whether it is more of help than a hindrance in some cases.
That’s how I hear it as well. I think Selkie is going to be bugging Scar to become her mentor every day from now on. He has superpowers, has the nickname, knows how to fight, and saved her dad. He would know how to train Dr. Terrorhammer
It *is* magic, so it could be doing that. Besides he just called on a god to give the blessing, so it’s possible that even if Scar doesn’t think of that, the deity would?
Pretty sure the idea is that the breathing tube is still venting into the bubble, but the bubble could also be permeable to oxigen. Diving bell spiders don’t need to replenish air in their bubble, because they can survive on the oxigen that naturally filters into it.
and so long as he doesn’t exert himself, he’d be fine even without the tub, he’s got the air in there, plus most adults can hold their breath for a minute before passing out, and 3-4 more before brain damage starts.
I’m sure he’s justputting an air bubble over Todd’s head, but that last sentence – “When we swim, we swim as one” – kinda sounds to me like he’s giving Todd gills.
I do to. It seems though that those mostly come up when it’s something where the cursing is not due to such a big deal, but when it’s actual life or death then a big cuss will come along like this.
Honestly I kind of miss them too. They were causing some issues of tone-innappropriateness though (a scene intended to be serious, but has cartoony illustratons slapped over the text, for example.)
Plus, to be frank, I got tired of seeing people bicker trying to decipher the actual specific cusses being referred too, and of those who didn’t like them always feeling like they had to make a damn scene about it.
The pictograms just kind of stopped feeling worth it to keep doing, I suppose.
Oh, that’s a shame. I liked figuring them out. (Though for this scene, I think having the blankout version is more appropriate, even if you were keeping them? For the sheer “OH HEY LIFE PROBABLY SAVED HERE” impact.)
I hope that you consider using them again in scenes where the tone fits? (I mean, a not-very-tense scene where someone drops a plate and it’s just a Word That Pops Out — that would fit the illustrations.) Nothing says you have to use the same conventions in Every Single Panel! Though if people’s comments about them are Un Fun, then there’s that. :p
I want to know how much facepalming is going on with Then right now. Avery may get a bit annoyed later, but right now he’s probably more worried about keeping Todd alive than worried that Todd will Learn Too Much. And let’s face it, Todd was gonna have to learn about resonance tricks sooner or later.
As someone who doesn’t cuss/swear, and who gets a little uncomfortable hearing it around me, I say to those who were making a scene about it: get over it. Annoying for us, I know, but people tend to do it. It is a credit to Dave that he does well at reflecting the culture.
The other objection, that the little cartoons distract from an intense scene, does hold some weight though.
I think censoring swearing for the sake of making people more comfortable is annoying, if they are goong to go that route, they should also start putting trigger warnings in the comic too when a scene is aggressive or theres any blood or anyyhing. Most people will utter a curse word at one point or another, it’s something that happens.
Earlier comics show a few characters who have cursed and it was uncensored. Not that nonsense with the pictograms either, which not only felt out of place, but had a tendency to lessen the impact of almost every scene they were in.
There isn’t regular swearing in the comic to begin with, most characters curse because of a intense situation or problem, not just to curse.
Frankly, I prefer the censored bars over those stupid male and female signs, but that’s just me. Yeah, I get Dave wants this to be a family friendly comic, but I also feel most of the writing will most likely go over younger kid’s heads anyways.
I enjoyed the pictograms myself but as a parent I just had to point out that kids get more of the writing than you would expect. My youngest just turned 8. At six she was able to understand far more “mature comments” than I was expecting or comfortable with. Also I have vivid memories of a 4 yr old I had in my camp group when I was a counselor back in the 90’s. He serenaded the rest of the group with a variation on “sitting in a tree” that I had never heard. “Johnny and Kara sitting in a car, are they SEXING yes they are!” When he sang this he threw in a pelvic thrust at the word sexing. Yeah, little kids pick up on a heck of a lot more than we give them credit for understanding.
Censoring = Wider Possible Audience. Personally, I wouldn’t ask that all creators of entertainment be G-Rated, but I admit that there are shows I don’t regularly watch and creators I don’t often follow because it just gets to be too much, even though the rest of their material is brilliant. As for trigger warnings–or any kind of controversy warnings, really–that is just good etiquette. I guess I do understand the issue of tonal shift, though; as others have said, it’s a good point.
No, it isn’t “good etiquette”, it’s people feeding into the delusions of other folks. People expect the word to be censored for them now so that they are more comfortable instead of learning to just deal with shit.
Avery’s gonna be so maaaaaaaad.

Well, my dad picked up on Scar’s speech style, tied it to Jar-Jar Binks, and now wants me to comment “Scar-Scar Binks.”
Commenting has happened.
I tend to picture his voice more like North (Santa Claus) from Rise of the Guardians than Jar-Jar Binks.
I hadn’t placed it, but now that you mention, yes, Guardian North is the voice I hear as well.
I mean, I kind of picture his voice as the heavy from TF2
I love it. Your dad is a genius.
Im thinking scars voice is named boris, has many many vodka after work with vasily and mikail.
I read him in a Rusky accent, too 😀
Who touched Sasha?
That’s how I hear it as well. I think Selkie is going to be bugging Scar to become her mentor every day from now on. He has superpowers, has the nickname, knows how to fight, and saved her dad. He would know how to train Dr. Terrorhammer
Maxi big, the Resonance.
I say heavy voice.
Scar is credit to team
Unless that bubble is also circulating oxygen through the water regularly, he’s going to suffocate pretty fast.
Y’know, unless we’re handwaving that because magic.
It’s not a handwave when it pretty much is magic – it actually could be doing just that.
Perhaps it works a little like gills. You know, filter the breathable oxygen etc out.
It *is* magic, so it could be doing that. Besides he just called on a god to give the blessing, so it’s possible that even if Scar doesn’t think of that, the deity would?
I think he just made a new helmet that locks into the suit.
well the sub is not all that far away, it would not take that much of an air bubble to keep him ok that long

I’m sure he’s justputting an air bubble over Todd’s head, but that last sentence – “When we swim, we swim as one” – kinda sounds to me like he’s giving Todd gills.
Or his blessing as an “honorary Sarnothi”
Todd thinking: FUBAR! IT’S FUBAR!!!
Scar is 100% excellent. And I love the “when we swim” bit!
1. Loving the religious/culture details. 🙂
2. I miss the cute little picto-curses. 🙁
I do to. It seems though that those mostly come up when it’s something where the cursing is not due to such a big deal, but when it’s actual life or death then a big cuss will come along like this.
Not to mention, I think the picto-curse in this case would be just as bad as the actual word…
Not so much, classically the F-Word pictogram was just a Male and a Female gender symbol interlocking with each other.

Darn it, that should have been a reply to Dave talking about why he stopped doing that. My stupid computer… 🙁

Meh. Swearing is crude and evidence of lack of self control, and a poor vocabulary to express oneself.
It’s not something to get offended or overwrought about, but neither is it “cool” or “mature”.
Called it:)
wait what
