We all understand she’s calling the person at the front desk a little **** right? Dave should have clarified that, and Andi should have clarified that just in case she was overheard.
Still love that this is a webcomic I can share with anyone. The choice of clipart profanity is a major benefit in my eyes. There’s more than enough stories with overabundant swearing, this doesn’t need to be one.
If we all understand it, then why should Dave have clarified it? Not to mention, why on earth would Andi? How would she? Mutter under her breath ‘You, not my daughter’?
hmm
I really do not see Andi as just insulting the guy, more like she is insulted by him and having a mini verbal spar.
To her this guy is saying
‘Oh you’re here for that child you left behind ALL those years ago?… Good luck getting her back.’
I didn’t read it like that, personality. I interpreted it as the front desk guy (who probably has no idea she gave Amanda up for adoption because of privacy laws and not needing the info) was making a comment in regards to Amanda’s behavior and attitude in general. More of a “good luck with that, she’s a real pain in the ass!” So, still being a little shit but not directly offensive (comments like that would mean him loading his job immediately rather than having a sit down with his supervisor in regards to why that “home” wasn’t funny. If he were taking a dig at Andi he’d had a big sneer, not so much a newbie, knowing expression.
Sorry to say, I totally agree with you. Amanda’s “ISSUES” run very deep, if Andi does adopt her, how long will the honeymoon last? Two weeks? A week? Three days?
Finding a home and then being brought back has probably wounded Amanda worse than not being selected all these years
would have.
If Andi thinks she is going to adopt the daughter she gave up, she is in for a rude surprise, she is getting, Oh!, So much more than that!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually, if it is about Amanda (which is how I interpreted it too) that’s WORSE than if he were being sarcastic about Andi’s chances of getting her kid back. Even as a receptionist, he’s still an adult in a position of at least mild authority over the kids, and definitely with privileged access to their files and what goes on in the facility. While it may have been a fairly mild burst of sarcasm, what if he did that and a kid overheard? For that matter, what if he prejudiced a potential adopting parent against a kid? There are some fairly big repercussions to that kind of thing; pretty sure Lillian wouldn’t be amused.
That said, it was definitely a very human reaction. Just – not appropriate at all.
I had a sense he had a sarcastic tone—not because she left Amanda there, but because he *knows* what type of kid Amanda is. Either way, it was pretty rude.
In the Bible Samson lost all his strength when he cut his hair. Seeing as she washed out her hair dye she is correlating it to that. Also it makes since she would use that reference considering her back tattoo is that of Gilgamesh it is clear that the woman has a thing for literary figures in Mesopotamia
They would not be step siblings. Because they now both have the same father, they are half siblings. Step siblings are what happens when one kid’s mom marries the other kid’s dad.
and it’s OK with you to have those same desk jockey’s basically tell you to your face that your proposed kid is a spoiled brat that deserves giving the prospective adoptee parents crap rumors about them before they even MEET the kid!? no do notice that that statement was an after thought type of statement said as she was walking away, right?
if he had said it more like this: “You’re here for Amanda, right?… yeah… ok, Lillian is expecting you, second door on the right, Good luck with that!” that would have come across to Andi (and most others, i expect) as an ENCOURAGING statement, instead of the snide remark that it is right now.
I don’t think she actually said it to the receptionist. The line around “little shit is dashed unlike all the other dialogue, so she either muttered it or was just thinking it.
Well it’s not like Andi knows what Amanda is like. So she doesn’t really understand the front desk’s reference ‘Good luck with that’ – on the other hand, her calling names to folk under stress is not a good sign for the coping of someone like Amanda.
Hmmmmm… I disagree. I think it’s a delicious sign of a mamma bear awakening. Of course, she will get a rude wakeup call when she figures out why the front desk person made the snarky remark—but I think she’s pretty much in the right here as long as she didn’t call him/her a little sh*t to his/her face.
That’s what I took it as (mild Mother Bear). I don’t know that it’s likely to think a sarcastic “Good luck with that” would apply to Andi’s chances of getting her kid back, so I’m thinking she heard a disparaging remark about her kid and has no context for why it might be a reasonable thing to say.
And don’t worry, this bowl is big enough for the whole comments section. (Largely because it’s fictional and thus infinitely large and constantly fresh)
As a front desk person, can I just say that I would NEVER say that sort of thing?! It seems like such a small thing, but professionalism is the name of the game. I work as the front desk person for a retirement community, and even with the most ornery of residents, I wouldn’t say that to a visitor. I know this is a comic, and it was only a tiny aside, but shoot, that would earn me a write up. Plus, it’s just plain rude.
I totally get Andi’s reaction, in other words. It’s a bit harsh, but definitely understandable, even if she doesn’t know what she’s getting into.
That’s what I was thinking, too. There’s no way on earth this guy is going to be there long if Lillian ever overhears something like that… or receives a complaint from someone who had it said to them.
I suspect it’s an older kid as Dondy said below. Especially as Andi called him/her “little-.” It’d be awesome of Andi to mention it to Lillian—though she probably won’t given she’s most likely nervous and wants to make a good impression.
I have to agree with you about her prolly not mentioning it to Lillian, especially with all that’s about to go down.
I think Dave already confirmed that he is a fairly young guy, but I’m pretty young too. Like, under 25 XD
But we’re trained to the nines about what’s acceptable and not. I get that some people are still pretty impulsive, though.
no, that is definitely an employee of the orphanage, you do NOT have the kids themselves sit at the front desk, besides the fact that violating the HIPPA laws, and records access the front desk person has vs. stuff that the kids don’t (and SHOULDN’T)have access to, it’s just not professional.
I don’t see any reason for Andi’s attitude being like that at all. The front desk guy knows what kind of problems Amanda gets in, and the expression on his face showed he didn’t say it snidely or while smirking. If anything, he’s probably concerned that she’ll back out once she gets to know Amanda. Maybe this personality flaw is genetically linked and is what makes Amanda so abrasive.
Actually, he/she looks snarky in the last panel (eyes drawn angry, but has a big smile) so I’m assuming there was a snarky tone with it. Andi has no idea what Amanda is like so she probably assumes it’s a slight against her, though if she thought it was towards Amanda it’d make her more angry. Mothers are protective like that, and Andi has no idea what an angry little kid Amanda is.
I believe that Andi will become very keen to Amanda’s nature because the two of them are actually quite a bit alike. So, yes, I agree with the “passed down snarkiness” gene in grandmother, mother, and granddaughter.
I get the impression that the front desk person is one of the kids, probably about junior high age. And I get the impression that Andi is muttering under her breath inaudibly after she gets into the hall. But yeah, she is being mighty prickly and defensive. It kind of runs in the family.
Despite some of my off-the-wall comments here sometimes, I’m actually told I’m a mellow person by a lot of friends/acquaintances (which surprises me—I DO have a temper). However I’d totally let something like this fly out of my mouth in a heartbeat—especially in such an emotional situation. Add in the fact it involves my child? Hooooooo… Yeah. Say hello to my scary, bitchy side.
And keep in mind Andi has no idea why the person was making the remark (she may have taken it as a slight to her rather than a slight to Amanda) so it’s even easier of a thing to take personally—especially if a sarcastic tone was included with it. Totally uncalled for and unprofessional regardless of the person’s age.
Just to clarify, he is not a resident of the orphanage. He’s a youngling though. Either a recent grad or doing on the job shadowing. Haven’t worked him out that far yet.
it’s good that you have confirmed that he is NOT one of the kids at the orphanage, that would have probably violated quite a few laws regarding Privacy Act, and whatever HIPPA stands for, and I’m sure there would have been other stuff as well, like the kid having PC access to his, and the other kids records, etc… yeah.. nooo. he may be an intern doing his training, but he’s sure as heck not a resident of the place, that would get them in SOOOO much trouble.
HIPPA = Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. It deals with medical professionals sending private records to other locations. Not sure if commenting on a kids behavior problems count as a violation, but it’s still bad form.
With meetings between prospective adoptive parents and prospective adoptees, engaging in a shared activity is useful in easing tension and building rapport.
With these two, I’d suggest mother/daughter anger management therapy.
Well, with that hair colour and that general attitude, Amanda is going to have NO trouble at all believing that her biological mother has finally come for her. :p
…
And then the fur is really going to fly.
We all understand she’s calling the person at the front desk a little **** right? Dave should have clarified that, and Andi should have clarified that just in case she was overheard.
We all understand. That doesn’t change the fact it’s a dumb form of censorship.
I kind of like it. It’s interesting, at least.
I read that as, “we’re all aware she isn’t calling Amanda a little shit, right?”
Yes, and that Gravel, for one, dislikes “clipart profanity”, though some of us find it amusing. 😉
Still love that this is a webcomic I can share with anyone. The choice of clipart profanity is a major benefit in my eyes. There’s more than enough stories with overabundant swearing, this doesn’t need to be one.
It’s funny, though. Better than censorship that could be anything.
If we all understand it, then why should Dave have clarified it? Not to mention, why on earth would Andi? How would she? Mutter under her breath ‘You, not my daughter’?
Ok I know you’re mad at your mom Andi and rightfully so given what she said but that’s no reason to be mad at the front desk guy.
hmm
I really do not see Andi as just insulting the guy, more like she is insulted by him and having a mini verbal spar.

‘Oh you’re here for that child you left behind ALL those years ago?… Good luck getting her back.’

would have.
If Andi thinks she is going to adopt the daughter she gave up, she is in for a rude surprise, she is getting, Oh!, So much more than that!!!!!!!!!!!!
What he meant and what she took from it are two separate things.
The receptionist is a kid.
I had a sense he had a sarcastic tone—not because she left Amanda there, but because he *knows* what type of kid Amanda is. Either way, it was pretty rude.
Biblical Samson?
Possibly. Doc Sampson doesn’t really have hair issues.
I kinda want to see her succeed at adopting Amanda just so I can see their reactions when they find out they’re almost step siblings.
Amanda and Selkie I mean.
They would not be step siblings. Because they now both have the same father, they are half siblings. Step siblings are what happens when one kid’s mom marries the other kid’s dad.
Annnnd f— Andi. Seriously? There was no reason for that. Just absolutely none.
I hate people who treat workers like the front clerk like crap. They’re awful.
and it’s OK with you to have those same desk jockey’s basically tell you to your face that your proposed kid is a spoiled brat that deserves giving the prospective adoptee parents crap rumors about them before they even MEET the kid!? no do notice that that statement was an after thought type of statement said as she was walking away, right?

It depends. Was his tone sarcastic? I have a feeling it was.
I can’t fault Andi this time. She’s sticking up for Amanda in at least some small way. I’ve been in that situation on behalf of my niece.
I don’t think she actually said it to the receptionist. The line around “little shit is dashed unlike all the other dialogue, so she either muttered it or was just thinking it.

Ok as a mama bear myself I can testify that I completely took it as her mama bear awakening.
Was thinking the same thing… it’s Amanda. The desk guy is quite sincere; she’ll need all the luck she can get.
The way I see it, Andi’s upset by that remark because that’s her kid. He basically insulted Amanda; and by extension, Andi because she’s her mother.
Oh, Andi, you have no idea what you’re getting into here.
This is going to be a CATASTROPHE. *Gets the popcorn*
Bring enough to share.
I’ve got the butter and salt!
Excellent!
And don’t worry, this bowl is big enough for the whole comments section. (Largely because it’s fictional and thus infinitely large and constantly fresh)
Well, a year and a half later, but you SERIOUSLY know how to do popcorn. ;-}}

Exactamundo!
Am guessing by the broken line around the bubble that the last words of Andi were said under her breath or somesuch, so kid at desk did not hear it.
I don’t see any reason for Andi’s attitude being like that at all.
