Another style-sheet sketch day this Saturday. I’ll try not to use any thin-lines this time. XD
-EDIT- A question about if Selkie was speaking english or her native language gave me an idea to add a Note from the Editor which both explains the convenient-translation and lets me (finally) reveal her language’s name canonically. 😀 Thanks!
Got a cute fanart today from Lorifly today!
Thanks!
The last two sketch-updates gave me some color ideas that, while I don't think work for the comic in general, fit well in a memory/flashback context. So, orangey-bluey shadows. XD
This has the makings of sadness…
I know.. poor Selkie. She didn’t even know! 🙁
I’m glad you used text in this flashback. The silent ones were cool and unique, but in my opinion a picture can’t replace a thousand words. it just lacks the same clarity.
I concur. This flashback in particular can’t afford the… lack of clarity the previous ones had.
Oh craps…this is the moment, isn’t it?
I would just like to point out that they in fact have a painting of cleavage in their dining room. Classy.
*Ahem* this.. also. Indeed.
I doubt the cleavage is as important as the giant ruby…
now that you mention it… i do kind of see a ruby there now… *mischievous grin*
Oh that’s just heart breaking. The stuff with Amanda brought up memories of her own…abandonment? I wonder if we’ll ever find out why her mom left her there…
Is she talking English or or native language there?
She’s speaking her native language in this flashback. But you just gave me an idea to make that more clear. Incoming edit!
One of the ways I’ve seen has either been a different font (difficult if you’re lettering by hand) or putting the Selkese text in angle brackets.
Sorry, I didn’t realize it is called Tensei. Putting text in angle brackets also has the benefit that it’s pretty standard (I’ve seen at least a half dozen comics that use this to denote other languages)
“Selkese” sounded more interesting to me at least. 😛
Now I’m wondering if Tensei is a real language…
I love the elongated perspective in the second panel. It really emphasizes the emotional distance and separation between the characters, each struggling with their own inner conflicts. I could really be reading into it, but that’s how I choose to interpret it, anyway. Very cool. 🙂
….and Selkie hasn’t touched her steaks! <Z3 This one really hit her like a semi truck!
…and I think Todd’s noticed.
Wow… “Is this church?” Hm. That brings up a WHOLE can of lotta-q’s…
Heather’s still upset too… I wonder if these two girls will have a special, if somewhat secret bond after this…
wow… ouch
i recall a single moment in my life like that, i sympathize with poor selks
“Is this church?”
*heart shatters into a billion tiny pieces* TTTTTTT___TTTTTTT
Oh, now that’s just cruel, and more common then I care to think about.
I haven’t had a chance to comment in a long time … but I’ve been reading. This page kind of requires comment.
Awesome heart-break, open up can of worms work. Selkie’s face in the 3rd panel is heart-wrenching. So sad.
The fade from current to flash-back was great. And I agree with Calley about the perspective in the 2nd panel – I can almost sense the “zooming” of the camera – classic shot.
Hopefully you never get tired of hearing it … but I do love your work! This page is fabulous.
why you gotta sad scene it like this.. .-.
Anyone else wondering why Selkie and mama are wearing track suits like they are apart of some sort of cult? I KNEW IT Selkie is a dagonite and she is here to spread the world of Dagon and Cthulhu and help to bring the old gods back right! *runs and hides*
My thought is because its loose clothing that won’t constrict around their gills.
I just noticed that Todds rash is gone. When did it go away? How did I miss that? I’d better do some backtracking.
It went away over the days between the grandparent visit and the Fairweather dinner, re: behind the scenes.
This makes me sad panda.
Great! So glad that rash isn’t going to be a problem for Selkie to be close to her new family. I would hate for anyone to be afraid of getting a kiss from their new little addition to the family.
Is “tensei” supposed to be capitalized, as it is the name of a language? Or do they have different rules for that?
I thought languages weren’t capitalized? …woops.
