I ran Tony’s french by a very helpful person on a facebook group of mine, so it SHOULD be right this time. XD
A piece background info: Lillian's attire started when members of her husband's family began giving her kimonos and qi pao's as gifts. She liked them so much that wearing them became a regular habit.

is he holding a water balloon full of jelly?
I laughed so hard I farted a little…
Revenge is sweet… and sometimes sticky.
I wonder how the grown-ups here will react when they find out that Amanda is Todd’s biological daughter and he didn’t even know it.
I must’ve missed something…where did you see that Amanda is Todd’s biological daughter?
It was in a flash back. When Todd and his ex were young, she got pregnant and gave up the child, telling Todd the baby died. She then called the orphanage, seeking her daughter, Amanda.
…Why does Mrs. Haversham-Zhang have a Chinese last name (presumably through marriage), yet wear what she calls a Kimono but looks like some cross between a qipao and a mumu?
So, I looked through the source images I saved ages and ages ago, and did a few google searches, and you’re right. What I’ve drawn here is definitely a qi pao, not a kimono.
Gonna chalk this one up to writer fail and fix it when I get home. Thanks. I may have to add some ornamentation to it while I am doing post-publishing tweaks. I’m no longer feeling the “simple and unadorned” look. XD
I am guessing that Mrs. Haversham-Zhang is not a young person, so her ability to wear a qipao and look good in it is impressive.
According to my wife they are quite comfortable, so I can understand her wanting to wear one…
Also, kimonos and qipaos are folded left over right.
Just a small question that I’ve been wondering about for a while. Why is it that all the kids at the orphanage seem to be about the same age? I don’t know if this has been answered in a previous comic or not.
i think its just divided by age ranges, and our focus is on the ones in this age range, awhile back a nursery section with babies was mentioned, so that’s my guess.
There is a larger age range of kids, but the supporting cast is around Selkie’s age so they tend to get focused on over the plethora of background kids. There is a nursery, toddlers and small children, all the way up.
Am i the only one who thought of Space Balls the movie at the ‘I hate Raspberry Jelly’ came up?
Nope, the whole scene flashed through my mind. Quickly followed by the, “…just how many a@##$%^’s are in this place?” bit.
I love Spaceballs. XD One of my favorite movies.
Ludicrous Speed!
“Oh no, not again.”
I have to ask: why would Lillian wear non-washable clothing to work with children? It’s obvious that her job is a fair bit more hands-on than, say, an elementary school principal. I understand that she needs to dress up as the director, but there are so many washable women’s dress clothes, and I’m sure that she has “paid to dry-clean a qi-pao” many many times by now.
Her clothing is durable enough to handle the wear, she’s not wearing silk or anything easily ruinable. It’s probably not conveyed very well, but she’s mostly being wry. Delegation has it’s privileges. 🙂
You can make a qipao out of all kinds of fabrics. The fancy sequined ones are not typical. Lillian probably also feels she should wear relatively nice clothing as she represents the orphanage to prospective parents and her bosses.
Were she not coming from an asian angle I would expect she would be wearing a suit or other business-style clothing, and guess what? Most of those are dryclean-only as well.
Who is the kid that said “Yeah, Tutu Mart!”? I think the first four are Wu, Sandy, Ricky, and Moonsong, and the second group is Amanda, Kiesha, and Tony, but I don’t recognize the last child.
The kid yelling “Tutu-Mart” is Ricky. The one in the top hat is Hamud, introduced here.
To those wondering: T’es mort means you’re dead.
Yes i find it necessary to tell people these kind of things.
Okay, cool. I wasn’t sure if it was Hamud or not. It’s nice to see him getting along with some of the other kids.
I hate to be the French police, but if he’s talking to the group as a whole, it would be “vous êtes morts.” >_> <_<
Didn’t it used to say Kimono? or did I imagine it.
I editted it it because it was pointed out to me that the garment I’ve drawn is more of a qi pao than a kimono.
on the topic of tony’s french:
if he’s talking to one of the boys, “t’es mort” is correct. if he’s talking to sandra, it needs to be “t’es morte”.
Oh shut up, all the comics villains.
