Paper doesn’t seem like a technology that would catch on underwater, so it makes sense that they’d not have a native word for it and need to use the English one!
If the “bus full of echos” is not the secret part… it must be who some of those echos are. Or the fact that the rest in Sarnoth are slaves. I think, since “old Farmer” was somewhat of a slave trader himself he wouldn’t be surprised by it – so I’m thinking the former.
I’m remembering what Selkie said about how Then reminded her of someone who would “sell you to a robot for a steak”. (That was my favorite scene in that movie by the way.)
Well, *that* doesn’t sound in the least bit ominous.
I wonder if this is a Vow that uses Echo powers to somehow bind the person in a way that makes it impossible to talk about it.
Does make you wonder as to whether that’s as simple as swearing on the Bible, or as complicated as Harry Potter’s Unbreakable Vow.
Unless Then is being overly dramatic, I’m really thinking it’s much closer to the latter of those options.
Also makes me wonder how much the other person knows about echoes if they don’t know about this vow.
The suspense is killing me.
>paper< very cool.

Pity Star Trek isn’t so well thought out with regards to its “universal translator”!
They have leather, so they may have something like parchment or vellum. Maybe some oil-based inks.
Good thought! They tattoo their faces, too. So this, or maybe engraving?
I don’t recall, have we seen written Sarnothi? (Other than speech bubbles!)
Not written, but we did see Sarnothi engraved in stone.
I was under the impression their face marks grew in as they matured, rather than being tattoos, is that confirmed somewhere?
If they use ink I think it would be octopus ink or squid ink.
I think a Vow of Father’s Fangs request is on par with asking Scar to lose the other half of his face while committing a war crime.
I´m getting the impression that “lose the other half of his face” is more or less what´ll happen if he breaks that vow.

The secret is what the US government wants to use the echoes for.
