I love that the first response is “Ban’Thie, you’ve kidnapped a child.” It’s entirely true, but it also comes across as humorous. Perhaps because it’s so obvious to both the audience and the elder, but Ban’Thie had to have it pointed out?
Also, a recent change has made me unable to use my old name, Eagle0600, for comments, due to it having a number in it. I’ve used this name for years going on decades at this point.
The makeup as well, potentially. Doesn’t seem like Sarnoth has much of that (and as an underwater society, it would be tricky to develop,) so it could be she somehow mistook it for really unusual markings and therefore a sign of Selkie being at least a teenager. (Who probably still wouldn’t be able to help all that much, especially if she didn’t realize Echoes can reach resonance as young as they do… and thinking on it, ‘nine’ is a fair bit older than Selkie was when she had the Mr. Stoney incident… but is still theoretically more help than a nine-year-old.)
Yes. That’s why her mom made that suppressor barrette for her. The other Sarnothi on the surface assumed that Plo Quar used her own ability as the baseline for that suppressor but I’ve wondered if she really used Selkie’s own ability as the baseline. Especially after we saw Selkie and Amanda in training with Scar, using the targets designed to measure their power levels, and Selkie obliterated it.
Almost ten years ago. Well-played, sir. Though Ban’Thie appears to have lost her spectacles (or markings, if that’s what the squares under her eyes are; I just always liked imagining her with librarian glasses).
I like how calm Selkie seems to be here. I get the feeling she’s not going to get upset and fight these Sarnothi to immediately get back to her father and the wedding. She might actually try to help them if she can.
This right here. Her first instinct was to protect her family. Once she realized these people needed help, she’s there for it even though she’s pretty sure there’s not much she can do.

Is this change you’re referring too something I did? I don’t recall making any major changes aside from a version update
It affected my username too. The comments just stopped allowing numerals at some point.
It’s the third party service.
It’s the deadpan that makes it. May be my new favorite single panel.
Now I’m curious about if Ban’Thie thought Selkie was just really short. The dress might have thrown them off.
Maybe they’ve never seen a Jin’Sorai before?
All things considered, that’s sadly very possible. 🙁

There’s no WATER up there! Air is heavy! Of course they grow different!
I am seeing SO MUCH facepalming in Avery’s future.
Ohhhh, this Elder was a prisoner of the Sar’Teri, wasn’t he. Those look like prisoner rags to me.
Well, he was the most functional, I’m guessing the wounded they have in the back are other echos who were rounded up and collared.
I’m really getting a Keystone Kops feeling from this guy.
Sooo many rakes in that tall grass he’s stumbling around in…
Mmmmmrrrrrmmmmmrrrghm.
I’m liking Elder Fhern already. 🙂
Once this situation gets sorted, I think Selkie may have another teacher.
Did we already know that nine was early for the resonance? Wasn’t Selkie using resonance on Mr Stoney as a baby?
Wasn’t it implied that Selkie was unusually strong/talented? Hence the need for the hair clip?

Randomly decided to reread from the start. My jaw may have dropped a bit here: https://selkiecomic.com/comic/sketch-day-sarteri-soldiers/

Nice catch!
Oh wow! Yeah, definitely nice catch!
I’m actually kinda glad the elder has some sense to him. This should with any luck lead to this not being a complete cluster.

Selkie’s an amazing girl with a huge heart. <3
i thought she was six?
She was eight as of the start of the strip, and has since had a birthday.
“I expected nothing and I’m still disappointed.”
“My apologies, child. Ban’Thie is an idiot. We trained her wrong, as a joke.”
“You WHAT?”
^ I have been banned from using this as a reaction at work.
Can I just say I love Ban ‘Thie? Her first response to Selkie’s fight or flight was to hug her :). “Yay! So excite! So cute! so much Echo!”
ahhh we are going with the comedy of errors route with Ban as the Village Idiot…
Anyone else compulsively refresh the page around this time of night, every other day during the week?
