The use of the term “court-martial” in the English-in-brackets translation is for reader convenience (quicker to understand and needs less explanation). The actual Tensei phrase used would translate more closely as “Remove from the Clan” or a more colloquial “Un-Clan”. But tossing footnotes or exposition-speak into the comic to explain that would be clunky. Clunky over-explanatory drivel is what this text box is for.

That has religious overtones, though — this more social, it sounds like.
excommunicate is not inherently religious- it means to remove someone from the COMMUNity, or ostracism. personally, i think it’s fine, although ostracism would also work

I disagree with your choice on translation convention here. It’s the American habit of Americanizing everything, and it’s blatantly the wrong choice when you’re trying to do worldbuilding rather than sanitize everything so that young minds stay as un-exercised as possible learning things about other cultures.
Just say un-clan. It’s fine. It explains what’s happening without making the readers believe that sarnothi have court martials.
