Well, that explains the supressor. Mother scared of her daughter’s power level. And the need to keep her daughter from having flaming green eyes while she is hidden with the humans.
It also explains why she was desperate enough to hide Selkie to leave her with the humans. An ordinary kid you might be able to hide in a crowd of other Sarnothi. A ridiculously powerful echo? Not so much. And I shudder to think what Selkie would have been used for if the current powers had gotten their hands on her.
So Selkie was full on Chosen One levels of power. The outburst wasn’t the result of a damn being broken, that was just her raw power.
I hope she doesn’t resent her mother for this. Also the dampener makes sense now. She might have gone Dr terrorhammer if she was that strong from that age.
What I am curious about now is if this is just random happenstance, the result of two powerful echoes producing offspring, or the result of a hybrid sarnothi from two different clans.
I am leaning towards “Special random chance” because I cannot believe that Sarnoth would not have encouraged its Echoes to get together to try and guarantee more Echoes, and that Selkie’s parents are the first.
Eh. I can just as easily picture an autocrat having a near coronary-equivalent at the potential implications and deciding that the Sarnothi as a people are likely better off with Echoes “merely” being Jedi wizards as opposed to demigods of the “Big angelic” kind.
That said, my money is on “Two already spectacularly gifted parents rolling a set of natural 20s on the genetic dice” for this one.
Yeah, my guess is also that it doesn’t necessarily GUARANTEE this strength, just that maybe the resonance is reinforced with successive generations and this does happen to be nat20s from already nat20 parents. (We still don’t know what they’re resonating WITH, but given the discussion of human Echoes, I wonder if the current degree of Sarnothi resonance is in part because they’ve eventually become common enough and Echo tech is integrated enough in their society that more Sarnothi are attuning by proximity, where they were originally as rare as human ones?)
We also know that the clan structure does seem to be quite rigidly enforced. I also doubt Selkie’s the first of mixed heritage, but I wonder if part of that enforcement is that there are… tendencies, for those kids to present more dramatically than ones who have parents from the same clan. (Not always ‘two clans equals stronger echo,’ but the dice being weighted more heavily to nat1 or nat20 than the numbers in-between in general. Add in two very strong Echoes as parents…) But this assumes the resonance does have a genetic component. Who knows if that is in fact the case… but if it could 100% be attuned, then I’m sure Then, at least, and probably Gien would be trying to push attunement – Then for himself, Gien for the community – so it does seem likely some of it is by chancez
Selkie remembering this may be a very good thing for removing the last of the block the suppressor caused. It isn’t great that her mom did this to her but it’s certainly understandable, if her daughter had to be hidden among humans for her own safety. I’m looking forward to someday learning the full story of why Plo Quar felt that was necessary.
Someone called out a girl genius vibe to this and here we are.
The threat of Selkie found and being taken and put through those well intentioned “education camps” and not being a child but a community resource with “duty and responsibility ” Would be very, very real.
Same reason Agatha was crippled, too much too soon and the threat of he being taken and used and never get to be a child.
Best answer? No. Only answer had at the time? Most likely.
So she’s the legendary super Saranoth (I spent a good couple of minutes looking for the correct spelling and couldn’t find it).
I think perhaps that suppressor was put there intentionally because of her latent abilities and they were worried she’d be taken and used as a weapon of destruction.
That explains why she was put in to foster care. Her Mother probably assumed she’d be safer there when she went in to hiding.
Broly, Broly, Broly, why are you so strong? Your power levels twice as high, as your Saiyan hair is long!
If your comment put the song in my head, I must share in order of the earworm myself divest.
But yes, she was almost Broly. But her Plo Quar stopped that so Selkie didn’t devolve into a madness shouting a single characters name as she fell apart.
… Yeah. that looks like a very damn good reason to jury-rig a suppressor with what tools you have on hand and worry about long-term averse affects later.
“We still don’t know what they’re resonating WITH”
I apologize for not replying directly; it seems that there’s a maximum reply depth being enforced.
I can’t point to a specific strip for this detail, but I had been under the impression that the Sarnothi have what are essentially “power plants” that create and distribute Resonance energy, in a manner analogous to how human power plants create and distribute electricity.
Whoaaaa
Well. Sure seems like being a child of two very strong Echoes might have some effect on the kid’s Echo Strength. Interesting.

If she was that strong, from that age, in a human orphanage where they were mean to her? Oh, yes. 🙁 What her mom did is entirely understandable now.
Yeah, I’m definitely getting Carrie-meets-Megamind as a likely outcome.

someone went super sayien without trying.

Especially with the limited resources at the disposal of both characters – and hi, I was the one that mentioned it XD

Ok. So Selkie is the Echo equivalent of an ICBM. Noted.
Oh god… Selkie is Broly.

You haven’t seen the new movie then.
“Little Blue Riding Hood was a an adorable little girl…
WITH GREAT FLAMING EYEBALLS!”
however if she is having this happen in a daydream, are her eyes flaming in reality as well right now?
Could be, but we have to wait until we aren’t watching her memories.

I’m chomping at the bit waiting for this update. I need to know!!! Love the comic, Dave.
