I wanna thank everyone for the feedback on the doodle last week. Pros and cons alike, I read and absorbed everything you all had to say. Truthfully, I’ve been dis-satisfied with the character’s outline style for a while now, so I decided to go ahead and try some tweaks to it. Maybe it isn’t even that obvious were it not for me making a big spectacle of it, I dunno. XD
I appreciate everyone taking the time to voice their opinions on the matter, thank you for indulging me.
I also got two fan arts to share. First is from An Artist. They posted it in the comments of the last strip, so for those that may not read the comments, check this out:
And Barbara sent me this piece over the weekend:
Thanks you both!
Love the new style. It took me a couple seconds to notice it, so it’s not a drastic change. It looks good, less harsh and angular.
I noticed the change and I like it π Also jeez everyone has some beef with Selkie huh?? They just can’t handle her AWESOMENESS :>
Tune in on Thursday to see the result of Tony’s Death Glare of Death!–oh, wait, they’re in gym class. Tune in on Thursday to see the result of Tony’s Vengeful Glare of Revenge! π
Tony’s been embarrassed. He has to make it up somehow, after all.
Read this after a long day from a very long weekend. Honestly didn’t think to check the art until after reading the comments. Must say, I do like it. It maintains the old style, but evens out the irregularities well. Good show.
Oh ****. I do NOT like the look on that stupid boy’s face. I do not like it AT ALL. He’s going to do something that will make this whole conflict escalate, isn’t he? If he drives Selkie far enough that she bites him or somesuch, things are going to spiral out of control.
Especially if the effect her kiss had on Todd is any indication. She’s apparently able to irritate skin from the tiny bit of saliva present in a cheek-kiss, imagine what a full-on bite would do.
Poor Selkie is going to have a difficult time in a few years when she starts dating.
well, we know it won’t kill him, because this isn’t that kind of comic.
ThatΒ΄s what the poor goldfish thought, too, and then Selkie ate it…
Well, I doubt she’ll eat dumb-boy. Humans and fish don’t taste the same at all.
As for Selkie’s prospective dating problems… Maybe other selkies will have appeared before that happens? ^^; Either that, or her boyfriends are going to have to invest in antidotes.
Or girlfriends ^^
Ah, yes. Of course. Still, that is all in the future as yet.
That was pretty much my thought, yes…
Ooookay… getting rather an “evil monkey in my closet” vibe from Tony here…
Except Tony is the evil monkey, and he’s not content to stay in his closet.
The new style of this comic suits me fine. It’s not as doodle-y as the sample you provided last, and not too different from what you had before. I like.
I don’t like Tony any more than I like Amanda, and I still wish Selkie ends up biting him with that poison saliva of hers. π
As per Selkie’s breathing trouble, I guess that she really does need to wet her gills more often when breathing harder due to physical exercise. At least I hope that’s all it is.
Oh, dear.
I would bet that he’s going to do something incredibly stupid and unnaturally destructive.
Probably in the direction of Selkie, at the very least.
I’ll join in with those who say that the new style works. The sample from before was a little too far, but this page seems pretty close to ‘just right’. Thumbs up. π
And a pre-thumbs-down for whatever Tony is about to do. >:(
uh oh. I know that look. That’s the look the guy in middle school had before I got pushed down the stairs. Be careful, Selkie!
Style Change – I should have posted this last week but I didn’t =D. I think that you should do a whole comic in the style that you were thinking about using. So we can see the bigger picture. I’ve read several comics where the style changes drastically overnight. I hated it but then you get past that because it’s still the same characters that you love. The bottom line is… People hate change. But they’ll get over it. Thank you for this comic, I love it.
Mon dieu! Tony has the vengence in his eyes! This does not bode well…
… I actually didn’t even notice you went with the new style until you pointed it out. The most I observed was slightly fatter black outlines. XD
It looks nice the way you’ve done it; the example wasn’t so subtle since it was an action sequence, so the fact that the new style isn’t recognized right off the bat seems like it may be accepted rather well, despite some nay-sayers (myself having been included, though I am always on the fence about decisions anyways) not being so comfortable with it.
I think you did a nice job introducing the new style. Let’s hope people don’t complain about it. XD
Slightly related note: I was playing Pokemon Soul Silver last Friday, and I caught a female Seel. I named it Selkie. XD Obviously after Selkie and selkies. β₯
They might be feeling good about bonking Selkie with a dodgeball right now, but if they were playing a water sport, Selkie would so totally pwn all of them.
I love that new style you were trying. I think it will make the art side of the comic so much stronger.
At the risk of sounding like a dick, I honestly thing any new art style would be a good thing. It looks like the comic is done in MS paint by a kid in Middle School. And with the background images and stuff, it wouldn’t even be that surprising to find out it is.
If anything I’d recommend brushing up on actually drawing and getting a computer drawing pad or something.
I agree actually. I love the story, but the art style really gets to me sometimes. No offense.. π
I actually do use a tablet to draw the comic, although the backgrounds are usually straight lines and vector shapes instead of being “drawn” directly. Maybe that’s why? Not sure.
Actually I think the vector shapes of the backgrounds contribute a lot to the MS-PAINT feel of the comic. Something to think about?
Actually I figured as much, I went back to the first pages and I noticed everything wasn’t all straight edge, it was kind of wobbly and wiggly.
Maybe in the future you can avoid all of those perfectly straight lines and stuff? It really makes the backgrounds look like crap. Also, I work in a school and I can tell you right now, the wooden floors don’t look like that. They are usually planks that are sanded down and then waxed or polished and they are segmented, they aren’t just 20ft long single boards in a row.
Also, it’s kind of a weird assed gym anyways. Every single school in the district of Marinette has gyms that generally only have 1 or two windows and are reinforced with metal bars. Not because we live in a bad neighborhood, but because of all the sports that goes on in there.
I’ve actually never seen a gym with that many windows in it before, the swimming pool at my school doesn’t even have windows.
My high school and middle school gyms were full of windows. But you have a point about the anti-shatter bars, I didn’t think about those.
I blame that and the extra long planks on me not thinking things through entirely. >_<
Ooh, this is hitting a bit close to home. Selkie could be in real trouble if the teachers aren’t vigilant.
Seems she doesn’t have very much stamina while breathing air. If Tony decides to attack her while she’s out of breath like this, and her carnivore’s instincts happen to kick in…it’s not likely to end well.
I can see Todd being very aggressive with the school if they fail to protect Selkie adequately. Not only is she dealing with bullying, but she can most likely be classified as a special needs child. That means there are specific legal protections in place, and I don’t doubt Todd is well aware of that.
Marine biology? That fan art really is very clever, Mr. or Ms. Artist!
I like the new foreground art. I think the hand-drawn sort of look works well with the style of the comic.
I’d be interested to see how it would look if you used a similar style for the backgrounds.
I liked the art style you messed with around pages 60
Love the new outlines! The foreground characters really pop out now!
Hey, wait a second…Mr. Thompson is leaning on his own word balloon in the first panel!
I suppose his words must bear a lot of…
weight?
How does Selkie make 2 mortal enemies in the span of half a week?
Give or take 3 years with Amanda…
