Amanda: Naw, he's still crushing on Te Fahn.
Selkie: ACK! You knows abouts that?!
Amanda: Everyone knows about that.
Heather: Yeah, I sat next to Te Fahn at lunch one day, and she kept drawing little hearts with, like, a black triangle on top.

Dun dun duuuunnnn
The really hard part is….no one is doing anything WRONG. It’s normal and natural to talk about your family…and normal and natural to feel hurt and excluded when you don’t have the same. Something hard for adults to navigate, let alone kids.
That’s part of what makes this comic so good: for all the fantastical, sci-fi elements in it, the characters still act & say things that feel real (or as real as we could figure for a fictional race & their fictional society, when it comes to mainly Sarnothi bits)
The kids’ll have some challenges with this, but there will be growth, and it probably won’t result in anything too terrible (though it may, sometimes things just happen)
That’s what I enjoy about it as well. The characters all have so many layers to them, even ones who would otherwise be antagonists, like Amanda or even Andi. They struggle with their own inner demons, like everyone else, and so we can sympathize with them and understand their actions even if we don’t condone them.
I think my favorite example is Heather’s parents, Barb and Ken. In names and design they’re clearly meant to be Barbie expies and very shallow people, but after the Shirt Incident they proved to be pretty good people, both reassuring Heather they still loved her AND grounding the crap out of her.
My favorite dichotomy is the way different characters are SO different, the difference between Ken and Barb, compared with Principal Hobbit. Stepping up to do the right thing, and avoiding doing the work. Great depth to the thought behind the characters.
Small typo in the first panel; it should be “too”.
Hey Dave, Google’s serving up risque ads on your website again. Just thought you’d like to know.
The last time I noticed that, I pointed it out. I was informed that the advertising is based on my own browsing habits. Right now it’s insurance ads on the left and buying cannabis seeds on the right. The seeds really surprised me.
Lets see….I got jewelry on the left, resorts on the right, walgreens on top.
Weird mix, since I certainly haven’t looked at any of the above, but I certainly prefer it over “Sexy singles in your area!”.
I’d have to check with Google on that, but my understanding is that the ads select based on cookies. You may need to clear yours. I’ll check with them to make sure my own settings are still valid also.
Little hearts with black triangles? Is that supposed to be a spade for homestuck-style enmity-at-first-sight? Oh dear! George had better watch himself!
We need to know about this. Usually it’s -two people -two hearts. Is this a general symbol that a random Sarnothi should know? Is it a common symbol for Sarnothi anatomy? Is it a Generic heart symbol for George, and a personal symbol for Te-Fahn? I have never seen hints that love in Sarnoth is a triad, so that is probably out. Or is it a symbol of proprietary ownership? Much thoughts, many what?
Black triangle = George’s hair
Thank you. All I was getting for “heart with black triangle” was adoption, love/hate, or the band H.I.M.
Ah, to be a child and just automatically assume everything IS your business. Many adults don’t grow out of that phase.
They don’t wanna hear about other people having parents cause they don’t.
