Te Vahn, you are a blessing. I hope that your son does not cause too much damage to your home with his new harpoon hand, and may you always have success in your business endeavors.
Would it be possible for us to actually get transcriptions for the comics? I have been reading the comic for years but am slowly losing my vision, i would love to be able to keep reading the comic for as long as it goes on but I need my screen reader to do that, and it cant read images.
I’d also support having a transcript, since this would make it possible to find specific dialog using a search engine. And of course, the existing “transcript” box would be the obvious place for it. You could use this discussion section for the stuff that you currently put in the transcript box.
So much yes! There are many pages of Leftover Soup that I find by hunting for the text on Google. Occasionally it’s hard to find them, but usually Google brings them right up.
(Latest problem: I recalled that the page had the word “thwip” but not that it was part of the construction “Thwipthwipthwipthwip” and Google couldn’t figure out the connection. And the word in the Author’s Note that was the other word I recalled, “polyamorous,” was split by HTML code to italicize the “amorous” part for emphasis, so of course Google was oblivious to that construction as well.)
So having a good transcription is useful for more than just people with vision problems — the Curb Cut Effect (see video link in my name up there).
Why would a civilization that lives beneath the water reckon time by the passage of the seasons?
Yes I am aware they can go up on the land. We can go into the water, but we prefer to stay on the land. logic says that these people would prefer to stay in the water.
If they are talking to a land dweller, I can see where they would use time units such as days and weeks and months and years. But living underwater it seems like they would have completely different ways of measuring time. Referring to the child as being 8 or 9 years old just seemed — odd.
But there are seasonal changes, especially in the great Lakes. The flow and temperatures change with the seasons. So it wouldn’t be unreasonable for them to have “years” though where they would put their new year.
Indeed. Also, summer days are almost half again as long as winter days in the Great Lakes region. It is true that the depths of the lakes are murky as hell these days, but before the industrial revolution and the pollution that came with it, the lakes were very clear. On calm days, Lake Superior still looks like 3 quadrillion gallons of tap water.
I’d have to go back and find the exact comic, but during the Truck arc when selkie gets “sick”, IIRC it’s mentioned that sarnothi actually hibernate during the winter. So they definitely note the passage of the seasons
If Gien would just stop and think for a moment, he would realize the benefits of waiting at least a few years for a twelve year old Echo far outweigh the problems of having a nine year old Echo.
Or maybe he’s one of those idiot adults who managed to forget how children actually behave even though he used to be one.
Remembering what 12 year olds are like, and getting them to do Anything, I’m guessing that he knows he’s got three years to get this done, before “talk to the hand, Daddy, cause the head ain’t listening.”
True, but would you rather deal with a super-powered moody almost-teenager who doesn’t usually want to help at all, or a super-powered child who is perfectly happy to help in all kinds of surprising ways especially when you least expect it? I know which I would hypothetically prefer.
Well if it’s a normal child, sure, imma going with that.
If it’s one of those creative kids that come up with new ideas and invent new stuff, I’m going with the moody teen.
Smart kid:Daddy, Daddy, I wanna go to Chucks Freezes, you said!
Average Dad: No, I said we could After you braided the ribbon into your pony’s mane. You can’t be finished already.
Smart kid: Oh, Yeah, I am. I invented a Mane-Ribbon braiding machine. And while it was working, look! I genetically altered his DNA to have a horn like a unicorn! It grows a foot per day!
Smart kids — ruining Saturday afternoons for fathers everywhere.
It’s a racism thing. He wants a Jin’Sorai echo.
And no, I’m not pulling the race card here. Gien has ALWAYS carried “which clan are you” in all of his interactions.
Yes! I was very relieved to see that it’s not normal to put children with powers into the work force. Given can get stuffed if he thinks that child labor is a good idea.
Selkie, could you look over my shoulder, and glow? It’s too dark to read these blueprints…. er, greenprints? Plans?
Also, I’ve never been comfortable with Dave’s portrayal of Scar. Is Scar a loyalist, Royalist, traitorist, terrorist, is he a double-agent playing both ends against the middle?
Profiteer, privateer, working for the General, for Gien, for his own ends, working for redemption? Working for the weekend? (I mean; everybody’s working for the weekend.)
Compared to an architect Daddy, he sure seems real large, very barge, and in charge, compared against Todd.
Is he Pro-Selkie, like Pohl? Pro-chaos like Then? He acts like everybody’s friend! Is he?
He’s was an opportunist that helped the police murder refugees in exchange for money. He says he regrets it and is now working to build refugee shelters. Whether he can or should ever be trusted again is an interesting question, but the refugees need the manpower, can’t turn him down.
To Selkie, he is her biological father and I’m sure he feels shame about what he did to her mother.
This is also interesting because this little exchange seems to imply that (at least before the civil war) those with Echo powers weren’t expected to start putting them to use until they were old enough to work – whatever age that might be for sarnothi.
Gien is clearly short-sighted, power-hungry, impatient, or some combination of the three. Selkie SAID IT HERSELF that part of the purpose of this visit was to see how the other Echoes work. Left to her own devices and speed she’d probably be happy to eventually do what she can to help but he’s going to run into a lot of trouble if he tries to strong-arm her into it.
And when strong-arming doesn’t work, I’m afraid he’ll try the guilt trip route which I can see being more effective – or at least more damaging/upsetting to Selkie :\
This only feeds into my thought about how Gien will try and use Selkie’s relation to Scar to force her to work as an Echo. He wants her to work, and is willing to try and do it diplomatically, but now that’s being told no, I suspect he’s going to become more forceful about the issue.
He could have a further angle of trying to get Plo’Quar to come back and work as an echo by threatening Selkie. Not so sure on that part.
Seeing as how powerful Plo’Quar is, something tells me that if Gien tries to threaten Selkie, Gien won’t be a tripod like Scar but will be missing his top half.
Scar is still observing his own penance and will unlikely help Gien in any coercion attempts on Selkie, especially after he blew the visit to her home rather spectacularly.
In fact, if Gien tries to push too hard, Scar would likely tell Todd to not allow Selkie to visit the village again for awhile until Gien either has an attitude adjustment or is removed from power.
In a way this reminds me of the culture/generation clash in imigrant families. Like the pressure and exoectation of some cultures that the kid should be deferent and ultimately responsible for taking care of their parents vs the kids realising that they don’t have to and none can force them because once removed from their country of origin said culture has no power over them anymore.
I think this will similiarly end with Selkie just saying no and refusing to be guilt tripped, leaving Gien to just huff and puff about it ineffectually.
Fanfic storyline: Gien kidnaps Selkie to force her to develop Echo abilities. Scar rescues her and blasts Gien into next year (or permanent 2020, if you’re really mean-spirited).
Good to see Gien is an outlier even amongst sarnothi.

Now that is a Voice….of reason.

Thank you for making this comment, you just reminded me that I’ve been forgetting to draw the warming lamps that were present on the last visit. Oops

What he needs more echoes for? The village seems small.

HA, GIT REKT GIEN
Oops, that was supposed to be a comment onit’s own, not a reply.
For making the village bigger. Last we saw Scar and Pohl were cutting bricks and commenting on how overworked they are with just the two of them.
Yes! I was very relieved to see that it’s not normal to put children with powers into the work force. Given can get stuffed if he thinks that child labor is a good idea.
Oh good, Te Vahn has fucking common sense.
I like how she drops the honorific when she tells him off. You tell him!
Good for you Te Vahn, for trying to give Gien a dose of reality. Whether or not he chooses to listen remains to be seen. :/
Well, that backfired spectacularly.
Does Gien even realise that Selkie barely has “glowing eyes” down? What does he expect her to do? Be a lamp?
