Nothing good came from a late night phone call.
Today's edition of the Secret Commentary is empty, because Dave failed to come up with something for it.
Nothing good came from a late night phone call.
Yay for the Avery “Called it!” crew. And oh boy…I do wonder what Avery knows about Plo Quar, because I think he has to know something as how else did the FBI/CIA know to check on her? I mean, maybe they noticed an odd new file at the agency, but I doubt they go though each new child file with a fine tooth comb.
To clarify, as I was rushed on my break, and realized I wasn’t quite clear…How else did the FBI/CIA know to check for Selkie at the adoption agency if Plo Quar hadn’t let them know what she had to do.
Also, Avery brushing Carrie’s hair is fricken cute as hell, and I think it’s one of the ways to display affection.
A weird blue kid showing up would set off a few bells in the bureaucracy when she was registered.
if i remember correctly didn’t “somebody” from the government (probably Avery) visit the orphanage just a few days after Selkie arrived? or am i confusing it with Amanda’s initial problems being ignored when she showed up, because everyone being occupied by the “new girl” vs a normal kid?
Yeah, it was Avery that visited a few days after she arrived. But how did they know to come? Did her new file just have a million red flags and for once, the government read a file, or did her mom tell the government what she did and knew to check on her there, that’s what I’m confused about.
Just woke up from a long and convoluted dream that included dealing with a large aquarium in which my… possibly siblings?… mermaidy types were growing up, with one of them about the size of my hand, and the largest one was like a teenage not-exactly-villain type guy, and I think Selkie or a Selkie-like person was with me (outside the aquarium), and we were discussing whether she had to interact with the oldest “sibling,” because she found him too close in temperament to her evil father-figure or some such.
And then I noticed that the water was only a couple of inches high, so I refilled it, but too much for the aquarium to handle or something, because when I went around the other side, a giant hole had busted in the corner. But luckily physics was weird, because there was water both above and below the hole, like the air was a big bubble.
And then I took a very tiny girl (like, the size of my fingernail) to a place in the mall where you could make gooey candy by mixing various flavors, and I had to scold her for using too much all at once, and she would dive into or fall into the various types of candy and I’d try to fish her out again before she drowned.
There were several other interesting parts of this dream (a VR demo in the mall, a video-game-IRL sort of attack by terrain-destroying giant machines, my friend needing a ride to work but driving past all manner of obstacles and nearly into the river/bay, etc.), but those two were the ones most closely connected to a sense of Selkie (specifically, of young Sarnothi, prior to leaving the aquarium).
In other words, I think you’ve finally infected my brain. Which is a good thing.
The hair brushing is such a wonderful little character note.
I agree… great way to show partner-intimacy without ..well… THE OBVIOUS. as well as the question of is this an inter-species sexual relationship. I know that’s been brought-up before, kind of uncomfortably.
I forget the wife’s name, but her mannerisms were very meek and withdrawn… it’s very possible she’s an abuse/trauma survivor, and their relationship could be an asexual partnership for reasons on both sides… But I think this was a nice touch in showing what Avery and his wife are doing late at night.
Carrie, Dave usually tags all named characters that appear in a strip.
She’s absolutely a trauma survivor. Behn was her husband. and this page confirms it.
Avery with that possibly dangerous cross-species relationship goals.
“Weird.” Not “wierd.”
Every time I see Carrie I love her more and more. She is so sweet and adorable. I wonder what Selkie could learn from her about their people. If I remember right it was what happened to her first husband that gave an excuse for the war. I wonder if she left family behind or if the Browns brought some of them along after they got together? What do they think of Carrie and Avery’s relationship?

Truer words were never spoken, because good news can wait until morning.
Unrelated to today’s strip just trying to remember, has the timeline regarding human/sarnothi relationships been made clear, was the fisherman incident first contact or did they know about each other before that.
I was under the impression that first contact was the fishermen incident. Remember, Todd (or was it his father?) saying something about how they used to go fishing/camping on the lake but the government put a ban on doing that in recent (in-story) years? I believe the excuse given for it was to protect some kind of rare fish … which technically wasn’t a lie, I guess.
I’ll reply to your original thread. Yes, it was Grandpa Theo looking into the story. But yeah, I’m not sure when the US and Canada found out about secret underwater nation…

I’m not very good at searching, but the more I think of it, I’m pretty sure it was Todd’s dad talking to his mum, when he was doing the late-night computer searching and you can see some kind of “national enquirer” type article up on the computer monitor about the sensationalized version of Behn Sr.’s capture by the fishermen.
I’m also not very good at “reply” either, obviously. 🙁 This was meant to be a continuation of my reply to Mikael.
Hey Dave, just so you know, I was re-reading the comic archive and I noticed in one of your comments you made a comment about a character’s design choice and then referenced another comic with a link.. Comic 259 and the link is broken.
Here’s the link to the page that makes the reference, just in case you wanted to correct it.

Thanks for the heads up.
