So this means that Wu now has a full-on Chinese name (李武) if he wants it.
So is Todd vegan or just vegetarian? I was under the impression he was just vegetarian (has less restrictions than vegan) so he might have vegan food around but it’s not gonna be his focus necessarily.
I remember him saying he was vegetarian. Probably ovo-lacto—though I’m wondering if he actually became a pescatarian (a person who’s only meat is fish) after his father’s advice about sharing a child’s favorite food. Usually people who are vegan just say that as Brandon just did. It’s such a big step—even from a vegetarian who still consumes dairy/eggs/honey.
when selkie first arived, he had cheese, so that would point to vegetarian….i never get the pescatarians – i don´t eat meat but i do eat fish? a fish is an animal/lifeform just as much as a chicken, cow or pig. making differences feels hypocritical to me.
If you’re restricting your diet for purely or primarily health and/or ecological reasons, fish are considerably different in terms of both internal and ecological impact than the land animals humans eat. So from that perspective it’s not at all strange to eat fish but not cows, for example.
Likewise (although I’ve never heard this personally), it’s not unbelievable that someone could asy “I’m not okay with mammals, because they are indirectly related to me and display emotions I can personally process, while fish are not and seem sufficiently alient to me interms of emotions that I don’t feel guilty.
And then there’s the grey area of some shellfish. If it has no structured brain to speak of, there is a very real argument to be made that it has no more consciousness than a plant, so unless you’re a frutarian it’s not an unreasonable argument that oysters should be on the menu even if you consider yourself vegetarian.
Fish are more easily sourced as farmed sustainably, and eco-friendly.
There’s also that many people are vegetarian (or similar) due to, for example, red-meat allergies/sensitivities.
I’m not pescatarian per se, but given that my only option for not poisoning my boyfriend is poultry and fish, I certainly have a preference between them… In my case it’s just a description, not any specific choice or goal I made. The only meat I eat is fish, mostly because everything else is either unappetizing or something that’d make me toxic to my bf~
The problem with rabbit is, they’re so low in nutrients that if you eat too much of it for too long a period of time you can get protein poisoning. The meat is so low and fat and so high in protein that your body won’t be getting all of the nutrients it needs if you only consume rabbit. Eventually, it’ll make you sick.
HylianArcher
That is only true of wild rabbit. Farmed rabbit, or home raised rabbit, does not have that issue. Rabbit isn’t low in nutrients, wild rabbit is low in fat. The lack of fat is what causes the problem. As long as you add some sort of fat to your diet with wild rabbit, there will be no problem.
Protein poisoning is actually caused by a lack of fat in the diet, not too much protein or lack of other nutrients.
I have had something similar. I have a friend who is a former gf that is flat-out alergic/sensitive to any meat protien. Once, on a date, I fibbed about when I had last had cheese. I told her that it had been two days, but I had had one (1) bite of what was supposed to be a hamburger but turned ouit to be a cheeseburger twenty-two hours before the date. (We lived and worked in towns about thirty miles apart with different schedules, so it was about two weeks between dates, on average.) About ten minutes after an open-mouth kiss, she had a rash. Last date for over a month.
For us Catholics on Fridays we only eat fish especially during Lent. And pre Meji revolution Japan they only ate fish for religious reasons it wasn’t till the Meji era that yoshoku cooking came about and allowed for the consumption of pork, beef, and chicken in order to better fit in with Western cultures and avoid colonization.
Being a vegetarian, he’d be brushed up on what to feed friends he has stuff in common with. He’s also stocked for veggie meals and just himself adds at least cheese and dairy. Being vegetarian will get you in with the vegans, I assume.
If one is pretty careful, I think even full vegan can manage nutrition without necessarily supplementing. On the other hand, that’s a lot of work matching partial-proteins from veggies and the various not-really-found-in-veggies nutrients, so a decent multivitamin is probably in the cards.
(I’m ovo-lacto, in part because the idea of trying to do the full thing is gahhhh, but mostly because I LOVE THE CHEESE GIVE ME MORE CHEESE AND ICE CREAM MMMMMM.)
AFAIK he’s still a vegetarian, he just has to cook meat for Selkie.
And broiled root vegetables can be very tasty, especially if you mix different varieties together and broil them with spices… …hmmm, I know what I’m having for lunch tomorrow now.
yup, they´re definitely cool. i hope we´re seeing a new friendship in the making…no offence to pohl and his family, but todd needs some plain old humans to hang out with – that are neither his family or his ex.
Never underestimate how good a properly cooked vegetable can tastes. My go too is oven roasted drizzled in olive oil and just a sprinkle of salt, pumpkin, carrot sweet potato, white potato and parsnip all come out delicious. I like my veggies a bit mushy so I leave a foil cover on for the whole roasting time but if you like a crispier finish take the foil off for the last 15 minuets. Bliss. I’m a total meat eater but people need to learn to make the non animal based sides of there diets better, be better for there mood and health for sure.
Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and asparagus are just a few of the other veggies that also come out amazing roasted. Radish, beet, onion — it’s harder to find vegetables that DON’T taste good roasted with olive oil.
Todd is making new friends too! This is the best! It makes me really happy for him because he deserves to be able to cut back and relax with some friends of his own every now and again, just like the kids.
Pasca and ovo-lacto are technically styles of vegetarian, not vegan, but I had to simplify the dialogue.
“Pescatarian” means you’re vegetarian with an exception made for consuming fish and seafood.
“Ovo-lacto” refers to eggs and dairy, it means you do not eat meat or animal-derived products, but you’ll still consume things that are acquired non-lethally. This would be Todd’s type of vegetarianism.
And “Full-V” is just something I made up, it means what it sounds like: actual vegan, no animal or animal products at all.
Full-V is not a term but it is a very clear linguistic question. In the context of the conversation the meaning of the letter V is clear as is the implications of ‘full’ as ‘fully adhering to the implications of V’. So no not a term but a very real way someone would ask this question. Yay English! This is also why taking to a long term fan of something or following the conversation of a friends group your new to can be so hard. We all tend to end up having personalised context for terms that on there own can not convey the information.
Roast root veggies *are* pretty good. As someone who is very much an omnivore and not a vegetarian/vegan, I still prefer to have some dead animal to go with them, but I’ve enjoyed my mom’s pans of roast potatoes and parsnips and carrots and beets and stuff before.
As someone who will eat just about anything that doesn’t try to run away, roasted vegetables are delicious if you do it right. A little olive oil, some fresh herbs, it’s honestly kinda hard to screw up. I like to pull them out a little earlier than they probably should so they’re still a little crunchy.
so THAT’s what I was doing wrong with turnips. I tried skilleting ’em because that’s my first strat with any new food.
Honestly Annelie’s name was screwed before she added another lee sound. That’s even worse than if they had a son and named him Orel.
So this means that Wu now has a full-on Chinese name (李武) if he wants it.

Although the most sustainable meat for human consumption is actually rabbit and not fish…

Root vegetables can be super good if done right, broiled or roasted on a pan. And hooray, Todd’s old lifestyle comes in handy!
I thought Todd was still vegetarian, at least when he ate dinner at the De’Madiea’s
Being a vegetarian, he’d be brushed up on what to feed friends he has stuff in common with. He’s also stocked for veggie meals and just himself adds at least cheese and dairy. Being vegetarian will get you in with the vegans, I assume.
Wonder what suppliment Brandon takes.

Roasted parsnips are the #@)(&$#@$
They are like if carrots ultra hot cousin came to visit
I found out that Parsnips are much more carb heavy than carrots. Had to stay away during thanksgiving.
Yeah I’ve learned that the hard way yesterday. “Hey these are good, I wonder what it is, they taste so sweeeeeeeee…… oh.”
My sister was vegan and we ate fried Satan for Thanksgiving (the bad running joke in the family.)
Oooh… These guys may be my favorites next to Todd’s family.
yup, they´re definitely cool. i hope we´re seeing a new friendship in the making…no offence to pohl and his family, but todd needs some plain old humans to hang out with – that are neither his family or his ex.
Kombu, hiziki, arrame, wakume, it was such a joy when first I met someone who knew more than just Nori! It was like a brother from a different mother.
Oh, and I *love* “Full V, my dude.”
Never underestimate how good a properly cooked vegetable can tastes. My go too is oven roasted drizzled in olive oil and just a sprinkle of salt, pumpkin, carrot sweet potato, white potato and parsnip all come out delicious. If you like, try a sprinkle of garlic and/or onion powder on them before baking. I do that with thin sliced sweet potatoes all the time. 🙂
Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and asparagus are just a few of the other veggies that also come out amazing roasted. Radish, beet, onion — it’s harder to find vegetables that DON’T taste good roasted with olive oil.
Haven’t tried it roasted, but I bet you could add artichoke hearts to the list, if you can get them raw.
Todd is making new friends too! This is the best! It makes me really happy for him because he deserves to be able to cut back and relax with some friends of his own every now and again, just like the kids.
Wait…this means Sandy is now Sandy Lee Lee!?! I guess that gives her and Annelie Lee something to bond over…
Naw, Selkie assumed “Lee” was a middle name, and Sandy just didn’t correct her out of amusement.
I’m impressed that she was able to keep it a secret for that long!
Fifth panel, first time I’ve heard this vegan terminology.
Pasca and ovo-lacto are technically styles of vegetarian, not vegan, but I had to simplify the dialogue.

Hmm…. Is it me, or does Brandon look like a ginger version of Norville Rodgers? 🙂
Rook re a rinute, rut rhen Ri rot it, Ri raughed. Ree hee hee hee.
but the question is, does he share the same power.

“Oh we are going to get along just fine.” he says while looking at the top shelf (the one above the veggies) I wonder what was up there?
I may be a carnivore, but I’ll be in heaven if you slow-roast me sweet potatoes.
so THAT’s what I was doing wrong with turnips. I tried skilleting ’em because that’s my first strat with any new food.
Honestly Annelie’s name was screwed before she added another lee sound. That’s even worse than if they had a son and named him Orel.
At least if is name was Orel you know it’s a perfectly good Moral name.
BBQ beets
