I wouldn’t call her “Crappy Amanda”, she honestly tried.
I never expected my kids to never get into fights– sometimes the only thing an 8 year old can do is beat the living crap out of someone who richly deserves it. They aren’t old enough at that point to be able to swallow it or to keep adult-level control of the situation.
And, you gotta admit, Tehk really DOES need his scaly lizard ass handed to him right about now.
As friends, we teased each other, we said weird things and poked each other in the ribs. But it was done with the background of trust — that it wouldn’t become abusive. That it was affectionate and just teasing.
But Tehk is Not teasing, what he is up to is “Taunting” and “Inciting to Riot.”
He thinks he is reading her like a book. But it is a book that he thinks he’s read. He has no idea the plot twist at the end of this one, and its coming his way fast.
That is something we didn’t do, and we didn’t let others do to our buddies. If you wanted a piece of one of us, you got all of us:
“Hey kid, if you don’t shut up, now, I’ll stand up. If I stand up, how many of the boys at this lunch table will stand up with me?…. Do you wanna know?”
(Gulp)
” … I didn’t think so.”
It would be a bad thing if she DID swallow her pride and accept such treatment, much worse. Now ideally she wouldn’t start hitting people, but it’s in character. Has anyone told her what she can do besides shut down and bite her tongue?
Nah, she’s justified this time.
Amanda was actually being civil and Tehk was *still* being a smug prick.
He deserved this. I mean *someone* needs to tell him that bragging about species superiority is kinda…wrong.
It’s not just that — Amanda has the particular touchy spot of “you can’t do that — that’s not for you — you’re forbidden, you’re ostracized.” Having him laugh at her for being out-group is pretty much her Berserk Button.
Well, he neglects to tell her a few things… Like most Sarnothi can’t be Echos. Also, humans can do things Sarnothi can’t easily…like eat grapes, hang around on the land without having to take breaks to clear gills, and exist in cold weather without heating packs. Having a fifth finger probably makes humans a little more dexterous at skills that require the entire hand (playing a human instrument, typing, etc…), too.
Yeah, I think he saw that humans have no claws, fangs or venom and assumed they were harmless compared to sarnothi. A common mistake for young apex predators, and one he’s about to learn has consequences (assuming Amanda isn’t stopped, which I think she will be before teeth go flying).
@Anvildude: um yeah… and SHE gets introduced to a species that has CLAWS that are evolved/designed to PUNCTURE and GUT their prey WHILE being SLOWED by that self-same water resistance… if Tehk thinks instead of fights, Amanda may end up the victor… but if he flips out and swings BACK… we may be looking at some SERIOUS injuries here for Amanda…
@dotcom: you wrote– “Having a fifth finger probably makes humans a little more dexterous at skills that require the entire hand (playing a human instrument, …”
Which brought to mind that we saw singing once? To the egg/tadpole/Dr. Bunny Ear’s kid.
First time a Sarnothi hears a bassoon, or a pfife, what will their reaction be? Will they think that The Grim Eel has come for them?
What ever comes it will be entertaining!
This is exactly how NOT to accept an apology! You can say stuff like the first two panels, leave it like that, and everything will be fine. But noooo… Tehk feels he has go on to justify what he said.
Well, he’s eight, and lacks the ability to think ahead to realize that what is funny to him was hurtful to her. Although… I think he just might be starting to get the idea by the last panel!
I’ve noticed that most humans also fail this way, at least once in a while. Even adults. Even supposedly sensitive, mature, empathic adults… they can STILL fail when it comes to humor. (HA HA HA… what? You don’t think ditzy blonde jokes are funny? Come on, that one’s hilarious. What’s wrong with you, no sense of humor?)
Yeah, this is definitely a case of “about to learn hands-on what is and isn’t okay to say”. And in Tehk’s case, I don’t want to say it’s deserved (violence rarely is), but he really needs to learn to read a situation BEFORE running his mouth.
He is very wrong, in a factual point of view. The Sarnothi can’t do a lot of things normal humans take for granted. There is a lot about humanity that is incredible that we ignore because we are used to it. Not to say the Sarnothi aren’t amazing, but they are a very specialized species.
Reminded of this, a little. http://www.scarygoround.com/?date=20180316 I mean, I’m sorry that the kid’s about to learn why it’s always a good idea to accept the apology of the plains ape when one’s being legitimately offered, but that’s how it goes.
Counterpoint: Amanda’s likely to end up in the hospital with severe allergic reactions if somebody doesn’t shut this down NOW. And won’t THAT escalate the larger geopolitical situation in a heartbeat.
Excellent point there about the allergic reactions. Tehk may get hurt, but he’s going to defend himself. Exactly the situation Jessie was asking about: kids DO fight, and if they’re getting pounded they WON’T always remember rules like ‘no biting’! Good job Selkie is right there, knows about the saliva problem, and is unreservedly on Amanda’s side right now.
To be honest, I’m pretty sure this will be stopped before anything can happen. There have been security upgrades to the school since the Truck incident, if Todd’s PTA moment accomplished anything. Heck, the one and only time I almost hit someone in the lunchroom when I was a kid, a teacher stepped in before anything could happen (much like Tehk, my target had pushed his luck too far on teasing).
So yeah, whether it’ll be a teacher or the kids who stop it, this’ll probably stop before Tehk loses any teeth or Amanda gets sarnothi spit on her.
Wonder how much of Tehk’s mouthiness comes from currently feeling like a weakling, stuck in a place where he can’t swim, can’t eat the normal food, can’t handle the cold, etc – wonder if his claims of superiority are coming from a place of feeling horribly inferior.
Or he’s an obnoxious 8 year old regardless of he’s in or out of water.
First thought, when I saw that last frame, was AND THERE’S THE AMANDA WE ALL KNOW AND LOVE.
“Welcome back crappy Amanda”? Not even.
And the part that I really liked was that she did not use her favorite insult. She did not call him a fish faced nehti.
When someone smites you upon your cheek, do you then turn and offer him the other cheek. But if he smites you upon the second cheek, kick the living shit out of him.
This is going to end badly for Amanda. First, the faculty are going to see Amanda hop a table and scream at Tehk. They won’t see what provoked it. Second, Amanda has a track record of abusive and violent behavior, so her telling them “HE STARTED IT” will fall on deaf ears. They won’t believe her, and even if Amanda didn’t have that reputation, she just attacked a member of a protected class–a political refugee. Combine that with her language (they won’t know what “nehti” means, but they’ll use the context to interpret it as insulting, not to mention a slight similarty to another word that I don’t think I need to mention) and I’d be surprised if Amanda wasn’t suspended over this. She might even get expelled.
And on top of all that, there’s the typical reaction to Sarnothi venom that she’ll have to contend with as well.
Best-case scenario I see is Amanda and Tehk both get suspended (because zero-tolerance policy). Worst-case? Amanda gets both expelled AND hospitalized, Tehk gets off with a slap on the wrist (because of his refugee status) and learns a new way to get rid of people he doesn’t like.
If any of that happens… Andi is already not at all comfortable with these aliens. This could push her from ‘eech, kinda weirded out by all this’ to MAMA BEAR.
Something that MIGHT help though is that Selkie is RIGHT there. And even if she was angry at Amanda, she does trend towards trying to do the right thing. She also dislikes Tehk. Think any teacher would do a double-take if SELKIE also says that Tehk started it, especially given that to the teachers, she is “one of them.”
I think this incident will definitely freak Andi out, but she’s also been working on her fear and trying not to pass it on to Amanda. If she finds out Amanda attacked this boy for insulting her, and the boy hurt her back, she will hopefully want to try and prioritize Amanda’s growth away from being a bully and fight-starter, rather than focusing on her own fear. It really depends on how the fight plays out, though — does an adult separate them in the next page? Does Selkie jump in and also get in trouble and/or hurt? We’ll see!
Ah, so who was it that said this wasn’t racism at all? I mean, sure it’s not technically racism, I guess it’s being special? But this is DEFINITELY on par with it now.
This happened to/because of me well into high school and beyond, not just as an 8 or 9 year old.
It didn’t help that I was quite literally the smallest boy in all of elementary school… being in the sixth grade, and smaller than other kindergarteners, meant I was viewed an easy target, and I ain’t no casual target. I always fought back so that I wouldn’t be viewed as JUST target.
So, after a heartfelt apology, and then keeping my mouth shut for the ten count, my tiny little fists might start flying again because of continued provocation.
I mean, I tried, I often really did.
In this case, though, I can’t blame Tehk either. A BIT of smartmouthing is justified.
Unfortunately, it’s real difficult to understand when that bit is over and any more is going to escalate a situation.
An admirable attempt was made. Alas, Tehk seems to be the type to see that there are barriers around people and topics, and just has to ask himself “how far do these bend before they break?”
I normally don’t encourage violence between children, but Tehk totally deserves that. What an awful child. Sadly I think this is going to end up with Amanda getting poisoned – no way is Tehk not going to fight back – resulting in negative press about Sarnothi. And just more racism in general. Hopefully nothing too bad happens.
I see a lot of comments on here siding with Amanda, saying Tehk shouldn’t have been picking on her.
Honestly? She kind of had it coming. She was trying to use someone for her own desires instead of actually being genuinely interested in being friends. Of course Tehk is going to give her a bit of a hard time. I don’t know a single person who wouldn’t have.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Amanda is still in the wrong and I am going to be sorely disappointed if Tehk gets in trouble for this.
I can already guess the direction this is going. Amanda and Tehk get in a fight and there’s going to be a huge blow out over Selkie’s people being in her school to begin with.
Yeah, all true. But Amanda apologized and tried to make nice, and Tehk really should have left it at that. Granted he doesn’t know Amanda as well as the others do and thus doesn’t know when to stop teasing, but if what Te Fahn said earlier is anything to go by, Tehk is normally this difficult to put up with anyway. He needs to learn to stop as much as Amanda does.
The violence isn’t deserved by a long shot, but nor is it surprising, given his behavior since he was introduced.
As an addendum to my initial comment: I really hope that Tekh and Amanda become Best Friends Forever because gives Tekh a black eye, ala every shonen anime ever.
While normally physical fighting is never the solution, I can’t help but want this situation to be the time it results in Tekh realising humans are actually pretty darn capable and changing his attitude just enough that the two can become the pair of “trying really hard, but still kinda not-always-nice people” in the class.
Possible if Sarnothi males have the same ‘heirarchy’ instincts as Human males. Fights are much more likely to end with friendships with dudes than not-dudes.
I agree. Though perhaps a little less predictable in the evolution of their relationship.
But yeah, these two could get up to some things. And/or have a healthy rivalry (as opposed to their current relationship) for a good long time to come. And both being a bit satellite to Selkie, but also having their own roles as well.
Oh, right…! She has launched herself to punch him in the mouth! It doesn’t matter how well-taught Tekh has been about never biting, her fist is still going to encounter his sharp teeth and venomous saliva.
Maybe he’ll lose one or more teeth, but Amanda’s about to have a very nasty injury to her hand.
Awh, spoke too soon. Welcome back crappy Amanda, you weren’t missed.
well he WAS picking on her and she is sensitive to that
I wouldn’t call her “Crappy Amanda”, she honestly tried.
I never expected my kids to never get into fights– sometimes the only thing an 8 year old can do is beat the living crap out of someone who richly deserves it. They aren’t old enough at that point to be able to swallow it or to keep adult-level control of the situation.

Oh my… Geneseepaws.
We meet again.
Indeed, good Friend, you can find me here, and there, and all about the webcomics. I hope you’re keeping well?
I am.
Been thinking about you and Avsaroke and 1800hellmo, and the others. Hope yu are keeping well?
It would be a bad thing if she DID swallow her pride and accept such treatment, much worse. Now ideally she wouldn’t start hitting people, but it’s in character. Has anyone told her what she can do besides shut down and bite her tongue?
the results of Poking the hand grenade with a sharp pointy stick when there is no pin is your own fault
Nah, she’s justified this time.
Amanda was actually being civil and Tehk was *still* being a smug prick.
He deserved this. I mean *someone* needs to tell him that bragging about species superiority is kinda…wrong.
Because this is America.
not even because of that, it’s still just… Wrong and you shouldn’t do it… unfortunately not enough people in the world follow through with that.
Nah, I’m on Amanda’s side this time.
I’m going to be realistic; at nine years old, most people I know would have done the same. The other half (including me) would have burst into tears.
He’s not wrong though. Maybe the tone isn’t coming across right but what he’s saying doesn’t seem particularly mean or infuriating.
Only in isolation. In concert with the past few pages though…
It’s not just that — Amanda has the particular touchy spot of “you can’t do that — that’s not for you — you’re forbidden, you’re ostracized.” Having him laugh at her for being out-group is pretty much her Berserk Button.

id have broken out the contact cement..
In Amanda’s defense, Tehk’s social skills are mediocre at best.
Yeah, this is definitely a case of “about to learn hands-on what is and isn’t okay to say”. And in Tehk’s case, I don’t want to say it’s deserved (violence rarely is), but he really needs to learn to read a situation BEFORE running his mouth.

No, that’s fair. Proceed.
He had to poke the eel. At least this one can’t bite off his head.
Give her some time.
Can’t bite off his head “yet”.
Amanda is Pants?
Pantsmanda. Panda.
I’m tired, but the image amuses me.
Great now I have an image of Amanda flailing away on Tehk while screaming “PANTS”
he´s her spirit animal, hands down!
as for biting, the way she´s going right now i´ll bet she´ll leave scars with or without using teeth.
Maaaybe a bit of overreaction but hey, atleast we aren’t disappointed.
Also, this definitely counts as racism.
Towards humans that is
Did you mean to say specie-ism?
Whatever.
Reminded of this, a little. http://www.scarygoround.com/?date=20180316 I mean, I’m sorry that the kid’s about to learn why it’s always a good idea to accept the apology of the plains ape when one’s being legitimately offered, but that’s how it goes.

Good job Selkie is right there, knows about the saliva problem, and is unreservedly on Amanda’s side right now.
Then again, Amanda knows how to beat on Sarnothi without too much trouble. She’s been picking on Selkie their whole lives, after all.
She may have picked on Selkie verbally and hit other kids, but have Amanda and Selkie ever actually fought physically? I don’t think so.
I mean physically where they punch and injure each other, they did have that marker fight
Let’s see if it’s true sarnoths kids know how to not use their claws and venom.
To be honest, I’m pretty sure this will be stopped before anything can happen. There have been security upgrades to the school since the Truck incident, if Todd’s PTA moment accomplished anything. What’s a Nehti?
Nehti means butthole, presumably not in the anatomical sense.
Buttholes are gross, that’s why it’s an insult
Correct. “Nehti” basically means “ass”.
Calling it now: nehti is going to be the n-word, and all our characters are going to learn about racial tolerance.
Naw, “nehti” means “ass”. https://selkiecomic.com/comic/selkie1198/
Probably the latter.
Why not both?
What will be interesting is how Amanda will apply her years of experience with Selkie into fighting another Sarnothi.
Poor Tek… it’s almost not fair.
A thought occurs.
Sarnothi are venomous.
Has anyone studied what a human bite on a Sarnothi does?
Might get a nasty infection from the bacteria that inhabit our mouths, assuming he doesnt get it cleaned and checked out afterwards.
She DID try. I’m not the biggest fan of Amanda, but I think she’s justified here.
First thought, when I saw that last frame, was AND THERE’S THE AMANDA WE ALL KNOW AND LOVE.
“Welcome back crappy Amanda”? Not even.

From zero to “international incident” in 2.2 seconds?

I predict a venemous bite…
Ah, so who was it that said this wasn’t racism at all? I mean, sure it’s not technically racism, I guess it’s being special? But this is DEFINITELY on par with it now.
Specism/species-ism*
Not special. What the heck, phone?

No, the smart mouthing is not at al justified. He’s being a complete nehti and as much as I don’t like Amanda, she’s not wrong to be angry here.
Alas, he was dead by “seven”.
An admirable attempt was made. Alas, Tehk seems to be the type to see that there are barriers around people and topics, and just has to ask himself “how far do these bend before they break?”

So hard to try to explain why you thought something was funny, and it wasn’t necessarily malicious, just an honest observation.. heh
In this case, it’s more like the man killed himself.
I mean, where do you come from looking so surprised, Tehk? There was no way that wasn’t gonna happen!
I wonder how many teeth he’s gonna lose from this. My bet is all of them.
Speaking of teeth, how do Sarnothi teeth work? Do they have lifelong resupply, like sharks?
